Book Description :

Examination Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: When In Cold Blood was first published, critics had a hard time categorizing the book. Capote himself held that he had written a "nonfiction novel (Capote in Plimpton 1966: 2)" and that he had thereby created an altogether new genre. In the subtitle, Capote stresses his central claim regarding this new genre, assuring the reader that what she is about to delve into is "a true account of a multiple murder and its consequences (Capote 2000 [1966])." As will be seen in the opening chapter, criticism of In Cold Blood has therefore to a great degree revolved around Capote's and the book's adherence to this assertion of truth. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (SOED) lists as the three first entries under the head word "true" true /tru: / 1 Steadfast in allegiance, loyal; faithful, constant (...). 2 Honest, honourable, upright, virtuous; straightforward, sincere (...). 3 Of a statement, report, etc.: consistent with fact; conforming with reality (...). The following investigation of In Cold Blood and of the biopic based on Capote's work on the book, Bennett Miller's Capote (2005), will proceed along the lines of these three aspects of the definition, questioning Capote's claim of rendering a "true account." The genre chapter and large parts of the ensuing discussion of In Cold Blood will be especially concerned with the definition's third aspect, In Cold Blood's consistency with fact and its conformity with reality. The question will be raised as to whether or not a true account of real events is possible at all, and in what ways Capote and other writers of New Journalism, as the genre is most frequently called today, have tried to achieve such true accounts.

Book Description :

This referential collection of essays is an important guide to the emergence and development of literary journalism through the centuries. The book begins with the defining of genres, literature and journalism, which blur the lines between them. It also gives an insight into the theories of narratology. Some practitioners included in this book are great American writers like, John Hersey, Truman Capote, Norman Mailer and Don DeLillo. These literary journalists bring to life both major as well trivial issues of the society. New journalists coalesce all the fictional techniques with the journalistic methods to present a unique and sophisticated style which requires extensive research and even more careful reporting than done in the typical news articles. The book closes with the concluding thoughts followed by list of works cited.

Book Description :

Truman Capote once remarked, “My primary thing is that I'm a prose writer. I don't think film is the greatest living thing”; nonetheless, his legacy is in many ways defined by his complex relationship with cinema, Hollywood, and celebrity itself. In Truman Capote: A Literary Life at the Movies, Tison Pugh explores the author and his literature through a cinematic lens, skillfully weaving the most relevant elements of Capote's biography— including his highly flamboyant public persona and his friendships and feuds with notable stars—with insightful critical analysis of the films, screenplays, and adaptations of his works that composed his fraught relationship with the Hollywood machine. Capote's masterful short stories and novels ensure his status as an iconic author of the twentieth century, and his screenplays, including Beat the Devil, Indiscretion of an American Wife, and The Innocents, allowed him to collaborate with such Hollywood heavyweights as Humphrey Bogart, John Huston, and David O. Selznick. Throughout his professional life he circulated freely in a celebrity milieu populated by such notables as Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. Cinematic adaptations of his literature, most notably Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, play with or otherwise alter Capote's queer literary themes, often bleaching his daring treatment of homosexuality in favor of heterosexual romance. Truman Capote: A Literary Life at the Movies reveals Capote's literary works to be not merely coincident to film but integral to their mutual creation, paying keen attention to the ways in which Capote's identity as a gay southerner influenced his and others' perceptions of his literature and its adaptations. Pugh's research illuminates Capote's personal and professional successes and disappointments in the film industry, helping to create a more nuanced portrait of the author and bringing fresh details to light.
