Graphene is a new class of material in carbon group with strong sp2-hybridized 2D-sheet like nanomaterial. In order to make an effective utilization of their astounding properties, they are currently used in the form of reinforcements in various proportions in metals and its alloys to fabricate the nanocomposites. Graphene is incorporated in oil and grease at nano range that results in higher load-carrying capacity compared with that of raw grease and oils without additives, which shows that graphene possesses self-lubricating capacity. Graphene is a planar sheet-like structure (2D), with more contact surface area in the developed composites that can make them suitable for industrial applications with well-established tribological performance. The novelty of this work focuses on the role of graphene addition in enhancing the wear performance aluminum composites to replace the conventional materials by graphene composite combinations. The current chapter explains the processing and tribological performance of graphene-aluminum composites and its effect with various hybrid combinations of MWCNT/SiC/Al2O3. Dispersion of graphene is carried out through ultrasonic liquid processor followed by ball-milling aluminum powder. Thus prepared precursors are vacuum-pressed and microwave-sintered. Graphene in the nanocomposites has resulted in significantly improving the tribological properties, where it gives the wear resistance by creating a solid, lubricant layer between the sliding surfaces.

ABSTRACT: Graphene reinforced natural rubber composites are developed to study the improvement in mechanical and tribological properties of natural rubber by the introduction of graphene as reinforcement. Constant strain minimization method has been applied to calculate Young's and shear modulus of developed structures. A three-layer model containing Fe (Iron) atoms at the top and bottom and polymer matrices in the middle has been constructed to calculate the tribological properties. A shear loading is applied to the top iron nanorod by sliding it to the surface of the polymer matrices for 600 ps with a velocity of 0.01 nm/ps. The results show the increase of 185% in Young's modulus, 32% in shear modulus and 48% in hardness by reinforcing natural rubber with single-layer graphene oxide sheet, respectively. Also, reduction of 28% and 36% in the friction coefficient and abrasion rate obtained by the introduction of graphene oxide sheet in natural rubber matrix. Also, interaction energy between graphene and natural rubber, the angle, bond and kinetic energy of the polymer and composites has been calculated and discussed.

Abstract: The friction and wear behaviour of hot pressed boron carbide/graphene platelets (GPLs) composites have been investigated using the ball-on-flat technique with SiC ball under dry sliding conditions at room temperature. The hardness and fracture toughness of the investigated materials varied from 18.21 GPa to 30.35 GPa and from 3.81 MPa·m 1/2 to 4.60 MPa·m 1/2, respectively. The coefficient of friction for composites were similar, however the wear rate significantly decreased ~ 77% in the case of B4 C + 6 wt.% GPLs when compared to reference material at a load of 5 N, and ~ 60% at a load of 50 N. Wear resistance increased with increasing GPLs content in regards to the present graphene platelets, which during the wear test pulled-out from the matrix, exfoliated and created a wear protecting graphene-silicon based tribofilm. Graphical abstract: Highlights: For the first time the tribological properties of B4 C/GPLs system were described. Fabrication of dense composites with good combination of mechanical properties. Raised wear resistance is connected with the creation of wear protecting tribofilm.

The main objective of this work has been the characterization of wear behavior of the graphene nanoplates (GNPs) in Ni3 Al matrix composites (NMC). The friction and wear behaviors of NMC with the addition of 1 wt.% GNPs against Si3 N4 ball are tested under different loads using a constant speed of 0.2 m/s. Tribological test results have revealed that small amounts of GNPs are able to drastically improve the antifriction and antiwear properties of NMC. A possible explanation for these results is that, the GNPs not only provide an enhanced effect for NMC to produce better wear resistance, but also form a local protective layer on the contact surfaces to reduce the friction. The investigation shows that GNPs hold great potential applications as an effective solid lubricant for Ni3 Al matrix composites and possibly other alloys.

Abstract: Rapid innovation in nanotechnology in recent years enabled development of advanced metal matrix nanocomposites for structural engineering and functional devices. Carbonous materials, such as graphite, carbon nanotubes (CNT's), and graphene possess unique electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Owe to their lubricious nature, these carbonous materials have attracted researchers to synthesize lightweight self-lubricating metal matrix nanocomposites with superior mechanical and tribological properties for several applications in automotive and aerospace industries. This review focuses on the recent development in mechanical and tribological behavior of self-lubricating metallic nanocomposites reinforced by carbonous nanomaterials such as CNT and graphene. The review includes development of self-lubricating nanocomposites, related issues in their processing, their characterization, and investigation of their tribological behavior. The results reveal that adding CNT and graphene to metals decreases both coefficient of friction and wear rate as well as increases the tensile strength. The mechanisms involved for the improved mechanical and tribological behavior is discussed.

The focus of this study was to investigate the effect of graphene content on physical, mechanical, and tribological behavior of epoxy resin. Four composite samples, consisting of 0, 1%, 5%, and 10wt% graphene were fabricated using a 3 roll mill for dispersion and heat press for curing. Friction and wear tests were conducted on a laboratory scale tribo-test dynamometer, using a ring-on-flat configuration, for one hour duration at an average sliding speed of 0.3 m/s under a variable pressure of 0.26 to 0.39 MPa. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to determine the storage and loss moduli and contact angle measurements were determined to compute the surface energy of worn and unworn composite samples. Scanning electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy was used to study the graphene dispersion in the epoxy and study the wear mechanisms. In addition, electrical conductivity was measured to determine the percolation threshold and as an alternate method to verify the graphene dispersion in the epoxy. The tests indicate that storage modulus and surface energy increased by 62.5% and 55% respectively with graphene content. The tribological behavior of graphene composites showed that this nanofiller was very effective in stabilizing the coefficient of friction and reducing wear rate as well. Neat epoxy showed a high wear rate and an unstable coefficient of friction. On the other hand, 5wt% of graphene exhibited the highest stable coefficient of friction. The improvement on wear resistance was remarkable, for example, the 10wt% composite resulted in a wear reduction of almost 98% when compared with the neat epoxy. It may be noted that the manufacture of graphene based composites was relatively easy, quick, and inexpensive while the samples exhibited improvements in many relevant properties.

Abstract : Graphene oxide was grafted onto the surface of basalt fiber via polydopamine to enhance the interfacial adhesion of PA6 composites. Abstract : Due to the chemical inertness of the basalt fiber (BF) surface, the weaker interfacial bonding between BF and polymer matrices will seriously affect the further application of basalt fiber enhanced composites. In this study, a continuous and compact graphene oxide (GO) layer was grafted onto the surface of basalt fiber (BF) using biomimetic polydopamine (PDA) as a bridge to improve the mechanical and tribological properties of polyamide 6. The impact and flexural strength of the PA6 composites filled by the GO grafting BF (GO–PDA–BF/PA6) indicated that the introduction of GO has made a larger improvement in interface bonding performance between BF and PA6 matrix. The friction and wear tests showed the wear rate of the GO–PDA–BF/PA6 composite decreased by 51% compared with BF/PA6 composites and it also showed the best wear resistance and load-carrying capacity under various applied loads and sliding speeds, explained by the improved interface bonding between GO–PDA–BF and PA6 matrix and the anti-wear protective transfer film formed by GO in the worn surface. This study provided a considerable flexibility strategy of tailoring the interfacial compatibility between reinforcement and matrix for effectively improving the comprehensive performance of composites.
