Book Description :

This volume examines how volunteers and non-profit programs encourage institutional change in prisons and offer individual support and services to people who are housed behind bars. Through a diverse set of chapters, including two that are co-written by current prisoners, the volume spans the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, and juvenile and adult facilities. The book showcases the exciting, groundbreaking, and yet often unrecognized work that the voluntary sector provides in correctional settings. Collectively, the chapters highlight beneficial practices while raising critical questions about the role of the voluntary sector in prison and reentry settings. The chapters also offer useful information about how to implement innovative prison programs that promote health, education, and peer support.

Book Description :

Understanding the Educational Experiences of Imprisoned Men explores how adult male prisoners interpret and give value to their experiences of education, presenting an opportunity to consider how education can be beneficial to prisoners including and beyond the enhancement of employability skills. While the primary aim for education in prison has been to increase employability skills to prevent reoffending, further attention needs to be given to the broader outcomes of educational experiences and the importance of the development of other personal attributes including self-confidence, empowerment and the ability to engage in positive relationships. This book considers how education is also used by men in prison to cope with prison life, to reconsider their identity and to develop and maintain relationships. It also discusses the relationships that prisoners have with their teachers and other prison staff as well as the relationships that different types of prison staff have between each other. In addition, the role that education can play in the process of desistance from crime is discussed to provide an understanding of what changes occur in men who participate in educational courses. This book will be of interest to not only students and scholars with an interest in imprisonment, rehabilitation and criminal justice practice, but also educationalists, those who work in the prison setting and in social work. It may also appeal to those involved in community development programmes and broader sociological research.

Book Description :

Research has shown that early identification and intervention is crucial and can in fact minimise, and may even prevent, the challenges of dyslexia from becoming too detrimental at later stages of education. This book offers both research insights and practical guidance for teachers working in Early Years settings on how to create resource materials that would be suitable for the development of children with dyslexia. Beginning with a contextual note on the key difficulties faced by children at risk of dyslexia, the book takes the reader through the processes of identification and diagnosis, before offering ideas on how to tailor classroom materials for these students. The book's resource materials are designed to target areas such as reading, spelling, numeracy, language skills, social and emotional development, and problem solving skills.

Book Description :

The Committee's report examines the rehabilitation of offenders, looking in particular at the effectiveness of prisons in reducing re-offending through rehabilitation, given the problems of overcrowded conditions. Issues discussed include: recent government initiatives; the provision and adequacy of education, vocational training and paid work programmes; offending behaviour and cognitive skills programmes; mental healthcare provision and drug treatment services; and rehabilitation issues related to certain groups of prisoners, such as remand and short-term prisoners, women, young offenders, minority ethnic and religious groups. The Committee argues that the best way of reducing re-offending is to ensure that prisoners on their release have the ability to get into work and a home to go to, and it explores ways of delivering an effective rehabilitation strategy which reintegrates offenders into society by providing opportunities and assistance which address the differing needs of prisoners and their backgrounds.

Book Description :

The natural mission of Computational Science is to tackle all sorts of human problems and to work out intelligent automata aimed at alleviating the b- den of working out suitable tools for solving complex problems. For this reason ComputationalScience,thoughoriginatingfromtheneedtosolvethemostch- lenging problems in science and engineering (computational science is the key player in the ?ght to gain fundamental advances in astronomy, biology, che- stry, environmental science, physics and several other scienti?c and engineering disciplines) is increasingly turning its attention to all ?elds of human activity. In all activities, in fact, intensive computation, information handling, kn- ledge synthesis, the use of ad-hoc devices, etc. increasingly need to be exploited and coordinated regardless of the location of both the users and the (various and heterogeneous) computing platforms. As a result the key to understanding the explosive growth of this discipline lies in two adjectives that more and more appropriately refer to Computational Science and its applications: interoperable and ubiquitous. Numerous examples of ubiquitous and interoperable tools and applicationsaregiveninthepresentfourLNCSvolumescontainingthecontri- tions delivered at the 2004 International Conference on Computational Science and its Applications (ICCSA 2004) held in Assisi, Italy, May 14–17, 2004.

Book Description :

This book offers a collection of original contributions to the literature on sexual crime, religion and spirituality. Does religion help people desist from sexual crime? Can it form the basis of interventions to rehabilitate people? Or does it provide justification and opportunity for committing it? What do the perpetrators say about their faith? What about the victims and survivors of sexual crime? The book asks and answers these questions and more in a unique collection of chapters – from academics, chaplains and prisoners. The book begins with an exploration of the role, history and development of chaplaincy in the prison system over the years, before providing a more personal look through the eyes of the Lead Chaplain at Rampton High Secure hospital in the UK. Subsequent chapters weave together theories of desistance from sexual crime, and analyses of perpetrators’ accounts of their offending are also offered, alongside firsthand accounts of prisoners from a range of religions. The book concludes with a thoughtful journey through the book by the Lead Chaplain at HMP Stafford, UK. It will provide fresh insights for students and scholars of psychology, criminology, theology and social work, as well as for practitioners, chaplains, and readers with an interest in learning about sexual crime, religion and spirituality.

Book Description :

In light of the transfer of responsibility for prison education to the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Committee's report examines the provision of education and training in prisons, including the overall strategy for prison education, delivery structures at national, regional and local levels, programme contents in comparison to external standards, and barriers to delivery across the wider prison regime. Findings include that current provision is unacceptable in terms of quantity and quality of provision, and a fundamental shift in approach is required. Although there has been an increase in resources available, in 2004 on average only a third of prisoners had access to prison education at any one time. The Committee highlights the need for an overarching strategy and higher priority to be given to prison education, based on recognition of its role in helping to reduce recidivism through rehabilitation, and suited to meet the needs of individual prisoners to ensure they have a real alternative to crime on release.

Book Description :

By the late 1980s half the nation’s children were receiving eleven years of progressivist schooling that failed to give them even the elementary basis of education that was completed by the age of seven in earlier days. This great reading disaster was caused by the ‘look–say’ method of teaching, which presented whole words not individual letters. This book explains the causes and provides the solution to this problem. In 2006, the Secretary of State for Education and Skills has ordered schools to use the phonic method but there seems little evidence that its implications are properly understood or that any serious re-training programme for teachers is being put in place. The authors believe their explanations and recommendations in this book are thus needed just as much as ever.
