This book outlines the principles of thermoelectric generation and refrigeration from the discovery of the Seebeck and Peltier effects in the nineteenth century through the introduction of semiconductor thermoelements in the mid-twentieth century to the more recent development of nanostructured materials. It is shown that the efficiency of a thermoelectric generator and the coefficient of performance of a thermoelectric refrigerator can be related to a quantity known as the figure of merit. The figure of merit depends on the Seebeck coefficient and the ratio of the electrical to thermal conductivity. It is shown that expressions for these parameters can be derived from the band theory of solids. The conditions for favourable electronic properties are discussed. The methods for selecting materials with a low lattice thermal conductivity are outlined and the ways in which the scattering of phonons can be enhanced are described. The application of these principles is demonstrated for specific materials including the bismuth telluride alloys, bismuth antimony, alloys based on lead telluride, silicon-germanium and materials described as phonon-glass electron-crystals. It is shown that there can be advantages in using the less familiar transverse thermoelectric effects and the transverse thermomagnetic effects. Finally, practical aspects of thermoelectric generation and refrigeration are discussed. The book is aimed at readers who do not have a specialised knowledge of solid state physics.

Thermoelectric materials exhibit a significant coupling between thermal and electrical transport. Devices made from thermoelectric materials can convert between thermal and electrical energy. System reliability is extremely high but widespread use of the technology is hindered by low conversion efficiency. To increase the practicality of thermoelectric devices improvements are required in both (i) device design and (ii) thermoelectric materials. Advanced thermoelectric analysis developed in this work provides general guidelines for device design by introducing a new set of design factors. The new analytic factors include Device Design Factor, Fin Factor, Inductance Factor, and Thermal Diffusivity Factor. The advanced analysis is applied to two material systems developed in this work. The first system investigated was a composite of WSi2 precipitates in a Si/Ge matrix. The composite was investigated through both solidification techniques and powder processing. The system has a 30% higher figure of merit, a material parameter relating to conversion efficiency, than traditional zone-leveled Si/Ge. The second system investigated was a novel quaternary Co[subscript x]Ni4[subscript -x]Sb[subscript 12-y]Sn[subscript y]skutterudite. The system was found to achieve both n- and p-type conduction with tuning of the Co level.

Thermoelectric materials can be employed for converting waste energy into feasible electricity through a temperature gradient by utilizing the Seebeck effect (power generation), and vice versa, as coolers by utilizing the Peltier effect. The most wildly used thermoelectric materials are formed by heavy, often toxic and expensive elements, such as Bi2Te3 and PbTe. Recent research on magnesium silicide stannide based materials had revealed promising performance with light and abundant elements, and thus the potential to reduce the material cost, making it more favorable for industrial and commercial applications. The conversion efficiency for thermoelectric material is evaluated by a unitless figure of merit (ZT), which is proportional to the power factor value over the thermal conductivity. Doping with Bi and alloying with Sn were proved to be efficient in enhancing the performance of magnesium silicide stannide based material with improved power factors. However, the thermal conductivity is still noticeably high. To further improve the performance, one potential approach is by decreasing the thermal conductivity via alloying with Pb. The presence of Pb introduces additional scattering and mass fluctuations into the solid solution matrix, which should reduce the lattice thermal conductivity significantly. In this study, different amounts of Pb were added into the Bi-doped Mg-Si-Sn solid solutions, and the impact of Pb was investigated. Due to the failure of the thermal conductivity apparatus, only the electrical properties were experimentally measured, the electronic thermal conductivity was calculated, and conservative estimations were made on the lattice thermal conductivity. The highest estimated ZT of 1.34 was achieved at around 773 K, with the composition of Mg2Si0.35Sn0.57Pb0.03Bi0.05, which is comparable to the highest literature value for the sample without Pb. That being said, with an expected lower lattice thermal conductivity than our estimation, the ZT for the sample with Pb is most likely underestimated. All samples revealed similar ZT values, and further measurements of the thermal conductivity will be performed to validate the assumption.
