Book Description :

Identification. The Vatican, or Vatican City, is the center of Roman Catholicism and the residence of the bishop of Rome (the pope). The popes controlled the Papal States in what is now Italy throughout most of the Middle Ages. On 13 May 1871, the new Italian state restricted the pope's temporal authority to the Vatican and Lateran areas of Rome and the rural retreat of Castel Gandolfo. The popes refused to accept the validity of this law until the Concordat of 11 February 1929 gave the Catholic Church special status in Italy and paid an indemnity to the now independent Vatican City.Location and Geography. The Vatican's 108.7 acres are completely surrounded by Rome.Demography. There are about 850 Italian and Swiss permanent residents, along with lay workers from Catholic communities around the world.Linguistic Affiliation. The major languages are Italian and Latin.Symbolism. The pope represents a link to Saint Peter and Jesus. Vatican ceremonies recall the words and actions of Jesus and his followers. Candles, incense and various rituals carry symbolic meaning. The Vatican is a symbol of Church leadership and its apostolic tradition.

Book Description :

What types of foods are served in Vatican City? Most dishes are Italian by default since that is the country in which the Vatican rests. What's the secret to creating Italian dishes at home? The Vatican is a sovereign nation, found in Rome, Italy, and is the center of the Roman Catholic church. It's quite natural that many of the top choices in cuisine are Italian, but this cookbook also includes different recipes that happen to be favorites of the current pope, past popes and cardinals, and the Swiss Guard, who handles security for the Vatican. The Vatican chefs have their choice of ingredients and equipment when they prepare meals for the pope, his staff, and visitors. Money is no object. Many Roman Catholics donate to their church, and some of this money allows the Vatican to prepare almost any kind of dish the pope and his visitors prefer. The meals in Vatican City usually consist of risotto and pasta dishes. They begin with an appetizer or antipasto, then a small-sized first course and the second, or main course. Those courses often are followed by fruits, cheeses or desserts like biscotti or tiramisu. Vatican cuisine has also been influenced to a degree by Arabic, Jewish, Greek and other cultures. Turn the page, and let's cook like the chefs at the Vatican do!

Book Description :

A century ago, Pope Pius X called for a restoration of the sacred melodies, and the result was the Vatican Edition. This book describes in careful, vivid detail the strenuous efforts of personalities like Dom Joseph Pothier, Dom Andre Mocquereau, Fr. Angelo de Santi, and Peter Wagner to carry out the wishes of the Pope. The attentive reader will not fail to note that many of the questions so fervidly debated long ago are still current and topical today. The original French edition, Histoire de la restauration du chant grǧorien, was published by the Abbey of Solesmes in 1969. Robert A. Skeris's new introduction to this edition illuminates the current discussion with documentation including the Preface to the Vatican Gradual and the "Last Will and Testament" written by Dom Eugene Cardine. Dom Pierre Combe, O.S.B., (1913-1993) was a monk and archivist of the Abbey of Solesmes.

Book Description :

A great museum is not only a collection of works of art or artefacts of various interest and various importance: it is also a living organism which has its own history to tell. And if the museum is of ancient origin, this can be of great fascination in itself. It is enough to think of a collections formation; of its progressive development which, over the centuries, takes account of, and is shaped by, the cultural interests of the time. Or of the acquisition, sometimes fortuitous, of the various works. Or of the changing tastes reflected in their display, and the various methods used in their restoration; or of the political developments or doctrinal implications in which the museum may find itself involved. The Vatican Museums, whose origins go back to the early 16th century, exemplify all these concerns in a particularly comprehensive and fascinating way. Their initial formation, almost in the character of a private collection; their threatened dispersal in the Counter-Reformation; their recovery under the impetus of the intellectual revival in the 18th century; their development, also in defence of the artistic patrimony of the State threatened by exports, at the end of the same century; their subsequent enlargement up to more recent times, thanks to the distinguished patronage of the various Popes; and lastly their incorporation, at times exemplary, in the context of the Vatican Palaces, first with Simonettis Museo Pio-Clementino, then with Sterns Braccio Nuovo and more recently with Beltramis Pinacoteca and Passarellis Museo Paolino: all this constitutes not only a field of study, comparison, and reflection, but also at times an example which others have followed. The present book, ideally, would have required a far more extensive archival documentation than the author has been able to consult. It is to be hoped that the systematic exploration of the huge, but very scattered, archival sources available may make it possible in future to update, or to amplify, those parts of the book that were unable to benefit from this irreplaceable support. It may be claimed, nonetheless, that it has proved possible to reconstruct the history of the Vatican Museums in sufficient detail, and that this book may prove useful at a time when the history of collecting is arousing increasing interest. Contents: Foreword. I. The Antiquario delle Statue from Julius II to Paul III (1503-1549). II. The first Vatican collection of antiquities from Julius III to Sixtus V (1550-1590). III. From Clement XI to Clement XIII: the Museo Ecclesiastico and the Museums of the Vatican Library (1700-1769). IV. Clement XIV and the foundation of the Museum Clementinum (1769-1774). V. A great season for the Vatican Museums: the pontificate of Pius VI (1775-1799). VI. The works of art of the Papal State in Paris. VII. Reconstitution and growth of the Vatican Museums from Pius VII to Pius VIII (1800-1831). VIII. The foundation of new museums in the Vatican and at the Lateran by Gregory XVI (1831-1846). IX. Reorganization and growth of the collections from Benedict XV to Pius XII: the building of a special gallery fro the Pinacoteca and the foundation of the Museo Missio-nario Etnologico (1914-1958). XI. From John XXIII to Paul VI: amalgamation of all the Papal Museums within the Vatican. Foundation of the Collection of Modern Religious Art and of the Museo Storico (1958-1978). XII. Book Description :

Italian-American dishes are what we crave and what we make, what we order and what we wax rhapsodic about. The last century has seen hundreds of inspired new dishes take their place at the table alongside traditional preparations, resulting in a cuisine that is as current as it is classic. At last, here is the place to look for the tastiest and most definitive renderings of Shrimp Fra Diavolo, Steak Florentine, Pasta alla Primavera, Linguine with Clam Sauce, Spinach with Pignol is, Tiramisu, and all the other treasures of the Italian-American table. In these pages, America's premier restaurant critic, John Mariani, and his wizard-in-the-kitchen wife, Galina Mariani, update and perfect all the classics in lighter, less creamy-and-cheesy versions made with the freshest of ingredients. The Marian is make a convincing case that Italian-American cooking, far from being a watered-down version of Italian cookery, is a full-fledged cuisine in its own right. In fact, as they show in a fascinating introduction, many elements of Italian cuisine in Italy today are actually imports from the Italian-American repertoire. In 250 recipes, they reveal not only how glorious that repertoire is but also how its basic elements may be used in innovative new ways - in a Risotto with Apples and Saffron, for example, or a Pork Roast with Fennel. This is a feast of food, from antipasti and soups through pastas and pizzas all the way to dessert, and also of history and folklore, in the dozens of sidebars and archival photographs that bring to life the family restaurants and home kitchens where these magnificent ethnic dishes are prepared and enjoyed.

This gorgeously illustrated volume began as notes on the collection of cookbooks and culinary images gathered by renowned cookbook author Anne Willan and her husband Mark Cherniavsky. From the spiced sauces of medieval times to the massive roasts and ragoûts of Louis XIV’s court to elegant eighteenth-century chilled desserts, The Cookbook Library draws from renowned cookbook author Anne Willan’s and her husband Mark Cherniavsky’s antiquarian cookbook library to guide readers through four centuries of European and early American cuisine. As the authors taste their way through the centuries, describing how each cookbook reflects its time, Willan illuminates culinary crosscurrents among the cuisines of England, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. A deeply personal labor of love, The Cookbook Library traces the history of the recipe and includes some of their favorites.
