Features - Thorough exploration of the aetiologies and pathologies for pain in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine - Clear discussion of the principles of treatment, acupuncture point selection and combination - Detailed explanation of herbal and acupuncture treatments for common and complex pain conditions - Deals comprehensively with the commonest clinical presenting symptoms - Provides treatment plans and modifications to these plans, offering more options for the practitioner - Includes detailed and useful case histories New to this edition: New chapter on treatment of pain in children Separate sections for the gynecologic conditions Includes Western-named conditions Red Flags for practitioners to indicate situations which are potentially life-threatening or dangerous Suggested treatments now include acupuncture as well as herbal treatments Following on from each treatment a prognosis is now provided

Book Description :

Like its companion volume, Acupuncture Patterns & Practice, this book is a clinically oriented presentation of differential diagnosis and treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. This volume consists of eight series of case studies (40 in all), each focusing on a variety of patterns associated with a common clinical disorder: asthma, facial disorders, poor appetite, abdominal and epigastric pain, abnormal bowel movements, abnormal urination, constraint disorders, hypochondrial and intercostal pain. Each case provides a systematic analysis of the patient's presentation, from the cause and site of the disorder to the underlying theory of the case. The pathogenesis, pattern of disease, treatment principle, and modalities of treatment (including both herbs and acupuncture) are described in illuminating detail. The authors, themselves both clinicians, then pose a number of questions that are likely to confront the practitioner. More than a hundred charts organize and present in graphic form what is explained in the text. Each chapter concludes with a diagnostic overview or "tree" that summarizes the process of differential diagnosis for the patterns associated with that disorder. Patterns & Practice in Chinese Medicine will be of particular value to the developing practitioner, as well as the student who is making the transition from the classroom to the clinic.

Book Description :

This book represents a new and hopeful paradigm for treatment of diseases that are spreading globally as countries adopt Western lifestyles and standards of living. It describes the phenomenal science and clinical efficacy of the work of Dr Xiu-Min Li across a broad array of immune and inflammatory diseases. These include food allergies, asthma, eczema, "new" diseases such as mast cell disorders, obesity, and mental health problems that are part of a worldwide "epidemic of progress". The most allergic people are caught in a cycle of medication, steroid dependency, emergency hospitalization, and curtailing their activities and diets to avoid triggers. Children are "losing their childhoods." They are fighting a battle against diet, climate change, and environmental degradation. Dr Li offers them hope by healing the entire immune system, not just address symptoms. In her practice Dr Li treats complex combinations of allergic diseases for all ages, from infancy through adulthood, bringing relief to people who have suffered terribly from oozing, bleeding skin, desperate breathing disorders, and life-threatening food allergies. She uses her vast knowledge of biochemistry to improve on the traditional decoctions to create refined versions suitable for modern tastes and lifestyles. In contrast with Western pharmaceuticals, which are the study of "one molecule's effects on one other molecule" Dr Li's work shows the effects of multiple molecules on multiple other molecules. Increasing numbers of scientists are beginning to see the possibilities for their own research, with the prospects for more collaborations with prestigious institutions around the world. http://allergyblogawardsuk.co.uk/5-managing-asthma-allergies-with-henry-erlich/ Contents: About the AuthorsAcknowledgmentsNotes on the TextForeword (Dr Renata J M Engler)Introduction (Dr Xiu-Min Li)Food Allergy UpdateAsthmaAtopic DermatitisInflammatory Bowel DiseaseMast Cell Activation SyndromeObesityFuture Research (Dr Xiu-Min Li)Appendix: Information about Dr Li's PracticeIndex Readership: Allergists, Immunologists, Pulmonigists; Dermatology, Food Allergy Parents, Asthma Parnts, parents of very eczemataous children, TCM childern practitioners and students, National Eczema Association; American Lung Association, Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Book Description :

Much of acupuncture practice in the West remains incomplete or less potent because it has been based upon particular interpretations often by only one individual, in translation. The broad, diverse and ancient practices of Chinese medicine are often misconstrued and overshadowed by the more modern Traditional Chinese Medicine in Westernised texts. This book places more powerful tools in the hands of practitioners and expands our knowledge of the full potential of Chinese medical practices. Grandmaster Wan was a well known doctor of Chinese medicine, who in the traditional way of Chinese teaching took on only a handful of students throughout his life, one of whom was Giorgio Repeti. The author's extensive notes, derived from his years of discipleship to Grandmaster Wan, form the basis of this book, and he has in the core of the book resisted any temptation to include his own views or amend those of the teacher. The approach described was characterised by Grandmaster Wan as the 3E approach (easy, economical and efficient), and is deceptively simple. It is, however, an approach that can only fully be comprehended through reflection and experience. The book covers the basic principles of diagnosis, with chapters on pulse and tongue diagnosis. A key chapter on acupuncture provides clear directives for treatment that relies on simple yet powerful underpinning principles, and challenges the much more complex approach to acupuncture commonly taught in the West. Herbal medicines and herbal treatments for cold, warm and hot diseases are also covered. This clinically based text will provide an essential vademecum for practitioners of Chinese medicine, and a thoughtful introduction for students that will carry them through to their own practice.

A fine work.”—Annemarie Colbin, author of Food and Healing The promise and mystery of Chinese medicine has intrigued and fascinated Westerners ever since the “Bamboo Curtain” was lifted in the early 1970s. Now, in Between Heaven and Earth, two of the foremost American educators and healers in the Chinese medical profession demystify this centuries-old approach to health. Book Description :

The Essentials of Chinese Medicine is a text book intended for international students who wish to gain a basic understanding of Chinese Medicine (CM) at the university level. The idea of writing such a text was originated from the Sino-American Consortium for the Advancement of Chinese Medicine (SACACM), which was founded in February 2000. In 1995, the British Hong Kong Administration set up a Preparatory Committee for the Development of Chinese Medicine to look into ways of bringing Chinese medical practice and herbal trade under proper control and r- ulation. After the reuni?cation of Hong Kong with mainland China in 1997, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region continued the efforts to uplift the practice of CM to a fully professional level through legislation. To help bring up a new generation of professional CM practitioners, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) obtained approval from the Government’s univ- sity funding authority to develop a School of Chinese Medicine to prepare students who will meet the future professional requirements through public examinations. In order to establish itself quickly as a rigorous provider of university level CM education, HKBU sought alliance with eight major CM universities in the Chinese Mainland, and one US university which was interested in developing CM edu- tion within its medical college. As a result, the Consortium known as SACACM was formed, with ten founding institutions from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Sh- dong, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Heilongjiang, Hong Kong, and the United States.

The first book to exclusively use Chinese medical theories and terminology to guide practitioners of Chinese medicine in the use of Western herbs • Written entirely according to the theory, diagnosis, and treatment paradigm of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) • Explains how to combine and modify the standard TCM formulas to non-Chinese herbs suitable for Western practitioners • Includes 58 monographs of common Western healing herbs, detailing how each plant is used clinically The ever-growing number of Chinese medicine practitioners in the West has brought about an amalgamation of many styles of Chinese medicine and various other forms of medicine from around the world. This book addresses the increasing demand for knowledge of how to integrate plants from outside the standard Chinese materia medica into the fold of Chinese medical practices in the West. It is the first in-depth guide to using Western herbs exclusively according to the theories, diagnoses, and treatments of traditional Chinese medicine that harmonizes the unique terminology and theories of TCM with other botanical medicines. The book contains 58 monographs, illustrated with full-color photographs, of herbs commonly used by Western herbalists. Each herb is grouped by the basic categorization for medicinals in Chinese medicine, such as Herbs that Resolve the Exterior and Herbs that Regulate Blood. The monographs detail the energetics, function and indication, channels entered, dosage and preparation, and contraindications of each plant. The author also explains how to use the herbs to modify standard formulas used in everyday Chinese herbal medicine, based on his own clinical experience. An appendix of Western Analogs for Chinese Herbs further highlights 40 Chinese medicinals that have related species growing in the West.

Book Description :

The twelve volume in the Evidence-based Clinical Chinese Medicine series is a must read for Chinese medicine practitioners interested in neurology or rehabilitation. Using a 'whole evidence' approach, this book aims to provide an analysis of the management of post-stroke shoulder complications with Chinese and integrative medicine. This book describes the understanding and management of post-stroke shoulder complications with conventional medicine and Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine treatments used in past eras are analysed through data mining of classical Chinese medicine books. Several treatments are identified that are still used in contemporary clinical practice.Attention is then turned to evaluating the current state of evidence from clinical studies using an evidence-based medicine approach. Scientific techniques are employed to evaluate the results from studies of Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and other Chinese medicine therapies. The findings from these reviews are discussed in terms of the implications for clinical practice and research.Chinese medicine practitioners and students can use this book as a desktop reference to support clinical decision making. Having ready access to the current state of evidence for herbal formulas and acupuncture treatments allows practitioners to be confident in providing evidence-based health care. This book is an easy to use reference, thus allowing practitioners to focus on providing high quality care supported by the best available evidence. This book links formulas, herbs and acupuncture points with treatment efficacy, providing the reader with potential for creating new formulas. Several of the most frequently used herbs from randomized controlled trials were investigated to identify their pharmacological actions in animal and cell-line studies. This gives the reader insight into the potential actions of herbs and their chemical constituents that are relevant to the pathogenesis of post-stroke shoulder complications, and may provide leads for drug discovery. The editors of this series are internationally recognized, well-respected leaders in the field of Chinese medicine and evidence-based medicine with strong track records in research.
