Book Description :

When the pulp magazine Weird Tales appeared on newsstands in 1923, it proved to be a pivotal moment in the evolution of speculative fiction. Living up to its nickname, “The Unique Magazine,” Weird Tales provided the first real venue for authors writing in the nascent genres of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Weird fiction pioneers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Catherine L. Moore, and many others honed their craft in the pages of Weird Tales in the 1920s and 1930s, and their work had a tremendous influence on later generations of genre authors. In The Unique Legacy of Weird Tales: The Evolution of Modern Fantasy and Horror, Justin Everett and Jeffrey Shanks have assembled an impressive collection of essays that explore many of the themes critical to understanding the importance of the magazine. This multi-disciplinary collection from a wide array of scholars looks at how Weird Tales served as a locus of genre formation and literary discourse community. There are also chapters devoted to individual authors—including Lovecraft, Howard, and Bloch—and their particular contributions to the magazine. As the literary world was undergoing a revolution and mass-produced media began to dwarf high-brow literature in social significance, Weird Tales managed to straddle both worlds. This collection of essays explores the important role the magazine played in expanding the literary landscape at a very particular time and place in American culture. The Unique Legacy of Weird Tales will appeal to scholars and aficionados of fantasy, horror, and weird fiction and those interested in the early roots of these popular genres.

Book Description :

A small New Hampshire town forms a new National Political Party: the Flake Party. Who gets slammed on their first day? Chances are, if you can think of it, it gets laid bare by this bunch of 'ordinary' people. Their Vice Presidential candidate has been buried for over 200 years: his body in New Rochelle, NY and his bones somewhere in England. But his spirit lives within these pages as the reader comes to know his innermost thoughts. Outrageous humor is the only thing that lets the viewer keep going through this irreverent gasp at the current political milieu. But this new party has answers to the problems, sort of. For instance, picture their proposed truthful version of a Clinton Library with a giant blue dress flying from the flagpole instead of the Stars and Stripes and you have just a hint of where this novel goes.

"I know I am but summer to your heart and not the full four seasons of the year." Edna St. Vincent Millay In the spring of 1908 the pale hue reappears in the Blue Ridge Mountains, as Georgia, a haunting Germanic beauty, falls in love with handsome Bentley. Caught in the illusion and glory of first love, neither understands it will change some lives for several generations. How can this be? A coed disappears as other mysterious events with sexual overtones occur but are not understood. After her decomposed body is discovered, other young women are murdered, gripping the town in fear. Driven by a dark and deviant motive, the taunting serial killer ritualistically displays the bodies of his victims. Sheriff John Woodward's physical and psychological limits are tested, as he strives to prevent further loss of life. This is a love story and also a psychosexual thriller, with moral and religious overtones asking why God fails to intervene. I. B. Wells, an English Major from VMI, and a son of the Blue Ridge, was an FBI Agent for 26 years before writing Women of Summer. He and his wife, Sue, who have two grown sons, live in Virginia Beach with their beloved dog, Victor.

Book Description :

Harry Parker was probably the most important figure in American rowing of the past century. His heavyweight crews at Harvard topped the leagues more consistently than any other team (they won the Eastern Sprints regatta, against most of the top college crews, more than three times as often as their nearest rival). From the time they miraculously won the 1963 Harvard-Yale Race at the end of his first year at the helm, his varsity didn’t lose a race for six years, and they didn’t lose to Yale until the Reagan administration. He was the first US National Team coach, and oversaw five Olympic teams. He coached the sons of his great oarsmen from the 60’s and 70’s, and at age 70 was still putting the sons to shame on a bicycle, or running the steps of the Harvard Stadium. He was respected by all, revered and adored by his rowers, and yet no one seemed to know him. The persistent myth was that he hardly said a word, and that his powerful mystique alone made his oarsmen great and their boats go fast. Though a fundamentally compelling figure, Parker’s famous reticence means that few managed to spend much time close to him. Since he made no attempt to explain himself, legends abound: he never got older; he could control the weather; he could walk on water. The Sphinx of the Charles: A Year at Harvard with Harry Parker takes the reader not only inside the Harvard boathouse, but into the coaching launch with Parker. We see how he coached—how many words he actually uttered—as he guided his team through a year of training, and hear about his life in the sport. We see a paradox: Parker remained remarkably constant over the last forty-five years, yet he constantly evolved, changed his style, and used every means at his disposal to build champion crews. The Sphinx of the Charles goes inside the rowing world in a way hasn’t been done before, putting the reader in the passenger seat next to one of the most successful coaches of all time. Parker is a historical icon, part of a tradition that goes back to the beginning of intercollegiate athletics in America. His story needs to be told. The Sphinx of the Charles is fundamentally a chronicle of a year with the Harvard team and a profile of Harry Parker as he was, five years before his death: comfortable in his position as elder and master of the sport, reflective but not nostalgic, aged but nearly impervious to aging. It is driven by Ayer’s own observations of Parker from his seven years of coaching and training at the Harvard boathouse, but especially from one academic year, 2008-9. he shadowed him for a few days every week from September to June, observing practices both on and off the water, and interacting with the team. The present tense of the narrative reflects this immediacy, but also the sense that Parker has endured and continues to endure. And though The Sphinx of the Charles is not a biography in the usual sense, Parker’s life and career were rich and extraordinary and they must be explored.
