Book Description :

"Labatt examines Faulkner's short stories, such as "Mountain Victory," "That Evening Sun," and "Barn Burning," and the architecture of the Snopes Trilogy (The Hamlet, The Town, and The Mansion), and finds that Faulkner's deployment of cause and effect is central to his narratives. Labatt also explores how Faulkner's use of plot creates an implied voice that lends a humorous element to the twists and turns of his stories that often brackets and encloses the pathos of his characters."--Jacket.

Book Description :

This book traces the history of an engaging character, a writer, who acts as the narrator and protagonist of three of Vargas Llosa's novels. In La tía Julia y el escribidor he recalls his apprenticeship, in Historia de Mayta he reflects upon the practice of his craft, and in El hablador he ponders the significance of his vocation. That this fictional character closely resembles his flesh-and-blood creator only adds to his allure. Because the three novels in question have such strong structural and thematic links, it proves quite helpful to conceive of them as a trilogy. Indeed, the connections are so pronounced that a significant synergistic effect results from considering the three together. It is this effect that this volume brings light as it analyzes how each novel functions as a separate entity, how these entities are integrated into a greater whole, and how this whole fits into the wider picture of the Peruvian author's long and prolific literary career. As students and scholars alike will find, thinking in terms of a trilogy greatly enhances our understanding and appreciation of Vargas Llosa's rich narrative.

Book Description :

The memoirs of Wasif Jawhariyyeh are a remarkable treasure trove of writings on the life, culture, music, and history of Jerusalem. Spanning over four decades, from 1904 to 1948, they cover a period of enormous and turbulent change in Jerusalem’s history, but change lived and recalled from the daily vantage point of the street storyteller. Oud player, music lover and ethnographer, poet, collector, partygoer, satirist, civil servant, local historian, devoted son, husband, father, and person of faith, Wasif viewed the life of his city through multiple roles and lenses. The result is a vibrant, unpredictable, sprawling collection of anecdotes, observations, and yearnings as varied as the city itself. Reflecting the times of Ottoman rule, the British mandate, and the run-up to the founding of the state of Israel, The Storyteller of Jerusalem offers intimate glimpses of people and events, and of forces promoting confined, divisive ethnic and sectarian identities. Yet, through his passionate immersion in the life of the city, Wasif reveals the communitarian ethos that runs so powerfully through Jerusalem’s past. And that offers perhaps the best hope for its future.

Book Description :

Over the years, a myriad of authors have used fiction as a vehicle through which they seek to illuminate major biblical events and deepen the understanding of the role of pivotal individuals within the Bible. However, never before have we seen events and characters portrayed as such through the eyes, ears and commentary of the Chosen Creatures of the Renewing who serve as witnesses to all that transpires. Part fantasy, part allegory, this imaginative tale will draw you into a world that will captivate and intrigue you. The Storyteller takes the reader through the purity and innocence of those days in the Garden, to the Fall of Man with its devastating effects, not only upon Adam and Eve, but upon all of creation, to the conflicts and struggles that engulf humanity as all find that they can no longer readily hear the voice of the Storyteller. Come join the majestic Lion, Judah, as he leads the others to the hidden valley that stands outside the ruined Garden. There under the Great Tree, guarded by the Beautiful and Terrible Creature with the flaming sword, you will meet the delightful Honeybee, the gentle Lamb, the wise Ram, and the stubborn Donkey along with the others. See a world you had no idea existed come alive before your very eyes. In opening this book, expect not simply to read, but instead to embark upon a journey that will take you into the heart, mind, and soul of the men, women, and creatures of the Storyteller’s hand. You will meet the Storyteller’s enemy, the Dark One, in the form of the beast who enters into a horrific battle with David. You will watch Noah and his wife and family share an experience never before documented in the annals of men. And you will fall in love with the animals and the understanding that they bring to life as it was and will be. Take a journey of hope that will lead you with certainty to your own place of Renewal.

Book Description :

His colorful patchwork cloak billowed out behind him as he pulled his homemade covered wagon along the dusty streets while minding his own business. It isn't until he is noticed by a couple of curious school boys, that everyone begins to notice him. Some say he is the town beggar. Others say he is a thief, stealing from fruit stands and markets. Some even think he’s an old gold miner who had killed a man in cold blood...one hundred years ago. Absurd. Most just think he’s a lost clown, left over from some carnival of old. Very old. How long has that old man been traveling through town right under everyone’s noses? The boys soon find out that that old man is a storyteller and they stay to listen to one or two of his tales. Well, parts of them anyway. They soon wonder if they are ever going to hear the endings to any of his stories’ well told beginnings. They also secretly wonder what else his magic wand can do besides make smoke.

Book Description :

Focusing on the figure of the storyteller, this study breaks new ground in the approach to reading contemporary literature by identifying a growing interest in storytelling. For the last thirty years contemporary fiction has been influenced by theoretical discourses, textuality and writing. Only since the rise of postcolonialism have academic critics been more overtly interested in stories, where high theory frameworks are less applicable. However, as we move through various contemporary contexts engaging with postcolonial identities and hybridity, to narratives of disability and evolutionary accounts of group and individual survival, a common feature of all is the centrality of story, which posits both the idea of survival and the passing on of traditions. This book closely examines this preoccupation with story and storytelling through a close reading of sixteen contemporary international novels written in English which are about actual 'storytellers', revealing how death of the author has given birth to the storyteller.

From Ezra Jack Keats 2015 New Illustrator Honor recipient Evan Turk comes his debut work as author-illustrator: an original folktale that celebrates the power of stories and storytelling. Long, long ago, like a pearl around a grain of sand, the Kingdom of Morocco formed at the edge of the great, dry Sahara. It had fountains of cool, refreshing water to quench the thirst of the desert, and storytellers to bring the people together. But as the kingdom grew, the people forgot the dangers of the desert, and they forgot about the storytellers, too. All but one young boy, who came to the Great Square for a drink and found something that quenched his thirst even better: wonderful stories. As he listened to the last storyteller recount the Endless Drought, and the Glorious Blue Water Bird, he discovered the power of a tale well told. Acclaimed illustrator Evan Turk has created a stunning multidimensional story within a story that will captivate the imagination and inspire a new generation of young storytellers.

Book Description :

A visitor from Peru, happening upon an exhibition of photographs from the Amazon jungle in an obscure Florentine picture gallery, finds his attention drawn to a picture of a tribal storyteller seated among a circle of Michiguenga Indians. There is something odd about the storyteller. He is too light-skinned to be an Indian. As the visitor stares at the photograph, it dawns on him that he knows this man. The storyteller is his long-lost friend, Saul Zuratas, his classmate from university who was thought to have disappeared in Israel. The Storyteller is a brilliant and compelling study of the world of the primitive and its place in our own modern lives.

Book Description :

An astonishing novel about redemption and forgiveness from the “amazingly talented writer” (HuffPost) and #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult. Some stories live forever... Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t. Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With the integrity of the closest friend she’s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she’s made about her life and her family. In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths to which we will go in order to keep the past from dictating the future.

Book Description :

The Storyteller looks at the parables of Jesus as told in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. By comparing the parables in each gospel we may be able to conclude why the writers of the gospels selected to tell the identical story. Is there a diverse meaning for each one, or do they all communicate the same message. We can definitely tell that some of the parables had multiple meanings and some were surely intended for a specific audience. A parable can be over analyzed, however, knowing to whom they were written and why they were told is a compelling study. Dean Reding was raised in the Texas panhandle during the fifties where the winters make you wish for summer and the summers make you wish for winter. He received a firm foundation in the Word under Reverend Mack A McCoy. He continued to study to show himself approved through three years at Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth and two years in the masters program at California State University at Long Beach. Since retirement from a major oil company he has been researching and writing this study of the Parables of Jesus as well as other books and poems.
