Book Description :

A MUST HAVE FOR VISIONARIES, ENTREPRENEURS, EXECUTIVES AND CONSULTANTS WITH A GAME CHANGING ATTITUDE This is not a fiction or non-fiction book. It is also not a workbook. So what is it then? This book consists of several worksheets. To be precise: 100 blank business model canvases. Since worksheet did not sound appealing enough, we chose “playbook”. A playbook contains a sports team's strategies and plays. Very similar to a business model of startups / companies. WHAT IS A CANVAS? Alexander Osterwalder's business model canvas presents a visual overview of the nine components of any business on one page. This page has nine boxes that depict the details of a company's product, customers, channels, demand creation, revenue models, partners, resources, activities and cost structure. HOW SHOULD I USE THIS PLAYBOOK? What exactly you do with it is up to you. I personally recommend you fill the canvases with your ideas, guesses, visions and strategies, than you experiment and test things in real life and change your business model along the way. To do it the right way I highly recommend reading: 1. Business Model Generation by Alexander Osterwalder & Yves Pigneur. The inventors of the business model canvas. A must! Enough said. 2. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Successfully launch your startup and prevent failure. 3. The Startup Owner's Manual by Steven Blank & Bob Dorf: As stated by Blank & Dorf, 2012 in The Startup Owner's Manual “As a startup moves through the Customer Development process, it will use the business model canvas as a scorecard, by posting the hypotheses about each component of the model and then revising the hypotheses as the founders gather facts. Think of your first version of the business model canvas as the starting point showing the hypotheses that must be confirmed in face-to face or online interaction with customers. (…) Using the business model canvas as a guide makes it easier to figure out where and how to pivot, since the team can visually diagram its alternatives and see what it needs to change. Each time the founders iterate or pivot in response to customer feedback, they draw a new canvas showing changes. Over time, these multiple canvases form a “flip book” that shows the evolution of the business model.” (Steven Blank & Bob Dorf, 2012) Tags: business model canvas, business model canvas book, the lean startup, canvas book, startup owner's manual, business model canvas poster, business model canvas whiteboard

Book Description :

Customer development is a process for discovering and validating market demand for a business idea and determining the right product features to meet customer needs. Customer development is used to help build products that customers want and avoid spending time and money on products customers don't want. It can be used to identify problems and new startup ideas, to test ideas, and to optimize ideas and existing products. Customer development helps us learn about our potential customers so we can build products they will actually use. Customer development and Lean Startup methodology have become quite popular with entrepreneurs. I wrote this book to be a supplement to books like The Lean Startup and The Startup Owner's Manual. Without rehashing too much of what they've taught, this is a tactical guide to practicing customer development. Many entrepreneurs and corporate innovators know they need to be practicing customer development, but don't know how to do it in a way that will help them build awesome products. Topics include: How to Get Startup Ideas Through Customer Development How to Test a Startup Idea's Viability Before Building a Product How to Find Customers to Interview How to Ask for and Get Customer Interviews How to Gain Customer Insights to Build Products People Want The Best and Worst Customer Development Questions How to Optimize Ideas and Existing Products Common Mistakes to Avoid When I first learned about Lean methodology and customer development it was mind-blowing. I've been thinking of and evaluating startup ideas for as long as remember. It helped me to focus my ideas, and helped me avoid wasting a lot of time and money and products that no one actually wants. This book is a compilation of everything I've learned through study and practice.

Book Description :

An essential guide to understanding the dynamics of a startup's board of directors Let's face it, as founders and entrepreneurs, you have a lot on your plate—getting to your minimum viable product, developing customer interaction, hiring team members, and managing the accounts/books. Sooner or later, you have a board of directors, three to five (or even seven) Type A personalities who seek your attention and at times will tell you what to do. While you might be hesitant to form a board, establishing an objective outside group is essential for startups, especially to keep you on track, call you out when you flail, and in some cases, save you from yourself. In Startup Boards, Brad Feld—a Boulder, Colorado-based entrepreneur turned-venture capitalist—shares his experience in this area by talking about the importance of having the right board members on your team and how to manage them well. Along the way, he shares valuable insights on various aspects of the board, including how they can support you, help you understand your startup's milestones and get to them faster, and hold you accountable. Details the process of choosing board members, including interviewing many people, checking references, and remembering that there should be no fear in rejecting a wrong fit Explores the importance of running great meetings, mixing social time with business time, and much more Recommends being a board member yourself at some other organization so you see the other side of the equation Engaging and informative, Startup Boards is a practical guide to one of the most important pieces of the startup puzzle.

Book Description :

Rapid Prototyping with JS: Agile JavaScript Development is a hands-on book which introduces you to agile JavaScript web and mobile software development using the latest cutting-edge front-end and back-end technologies including: Node.js, Backbone.js, MongoDB and others. More information at http://rpjs.co. This book was borne out of frustration. I have been in software engineering for many years, and when I started learning Node.js and Backbone.js, I learned the hard way that their official documentation and the Internet lack in quick start guides and examples. Needless to say, it was virtually impossible to find all of the tutorials for JS-related modern technologies in one place. The best way to learn is to do, right? Therefore, I've used the approach of small simple examples, i.e., quick start guides, to expose myself to the new cool tech. After I was done with the basic apps, I needed some references and organization. I started to write this manual mostly for myself, so I can understand the concepts better and refer to the samples later. Then StartupMonthly and I taught a few 2-day intensive classes on the same subject -- helping experienced developers to jump-start their careers with agile JavaScript development. The manual we used was updated and iterated many times based on the feedback received. The end result is this book. What to Expect A typical reader of RPJS should expect a collection of quick start guides, tutorials and suggestions (e.g., Git workflow). There is a lot of coding and not much theory. All the theory we cover is directly related to some of the practical aspects, and essential for better understanding of technologies and specific approaches in dealing with them, e.g., JSONP and cross-domain calls. In addition to coding examples, the book covers virtually all setup and deployment step-by-step. You'll learn on the examples of Chat web/mobile applications starting with front-end components. There are a few versions of these applications, but by the end we'll put front-end and back-end together and deploy to the production environment. The Chat application contains all of the necessary components typical for a basic web app, and will give you enough confidence to continue developing on your own, apply for a job/promotion or build a startup! Who This Book is For The book is designed for advanced-beginner and intermediate-level web and mobile developers: somebody who has been (or still is) an expert in other languages like Ruby on Rails, PHP, Perl, Python or/and Java. The type of a developer who wants to learn more about JavaScript and Node.js related techniques for building web and mobile application prototypes fast. Our target user doesn't have time to dig through voluminous (or tiny, at the other extreme) official documentation. The goal of Rapid Prototyping with JS is not to make an expert out of a reader, but to help him/her to start building apps as soon as possible. Rapid Prototyping with JS: Agile JavaScript Development, as you can tell from the name, is about taking your idea to a functional prototype in the form of a web or a mobile application as fast as possible. This thinking adheres to the Lean Startup30 methodology; therefore, this book would be more valuable to startup founders, but big companies' employees might also find it useful, especially if they plan to add new skills to their resumes. What This Book is Not Rapid Prototyping with JS is neither a comprehensive book on several frameworks, libraries or technologies (or just a particular one), nor a reference for all the tips and tricks of web development. Examples similar to ones in this book might be publicly available online. Even more so, if you're not familiar with fundamental programming concepts like loops, if/else statements, arrays, hashes, object and functions, you won't find them in Rapid Prototyping with JS.

Book Description :

You are not a Visionary… yet. The Lean Entrepreneur shows you how to become one. Most of us believe entrepreneurial visionaries are born, not made. Our media glorify business outliers like Bezos, Branson, Gates, and Jobs as heroes with X-ray vision who can look to the future, see clearly what will be, imagine a fully formed product or experience and then, simply make the vision real. Many in our entrepreneur community still believe that to be visionary, we must merely execute on a seemingly good idea and ignore all doubt. With this mindset, companies build doomed products in a vacuum; enterprises make ill-fated innovation investment decisions; and employees and shareholders come along for an uncomfortable ride. Falling prey to the Myth of the Visionary confuses talented entrepreneurs, product managers, innovators and investors. It leads us to heartbreaking, costly and preventable failures in new product and venture development. The Lean Entrepreneur moves us beyond this myth. It combines powerful customer insight, rapid experimentation and easily actionable data from the Lean Startup methodology to empower individuals, companies, and entire teams to evolve their vision, solve problems, and create value at the speed of the Internet. Anyone can be visionary. The Lean Entrepreneur shows you how to: Apply actionable tips, tricks and hacks from successful lean entrepreneurs. Leverage the Innovation Spectrum to disrupt existing markets and create new ones. Drive strategies for efficient market testing with Minimal Viable Products. Engage customers with Viability Testing and radically reduce time and budget for product development. Rapidly create cross-functional innovation teams that devour roadblocks and set new benchmarks. Bring your organization critical focus on the power of loyal customers and valuable products you can build to serve them. Expert advice from Coca-Cola’s Vice President of Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Learn how the world’s largest beverage brand uses design to grow its business by combining the advantages of a large-scale company with the agility of a nimble startup. Every company needs both scale and agility to win. From a fledging startup in Nepal, to a century-old multinational in New York, scale and agility are two qualities that are essential to every company’s success. Start-ups understand agility. They know just when to pivot to stay alive. But what they haven’t mastered yet is how to stabilize their business model so they can move to the next stage and become full-fledged companies. And well-established companies know scale. They are successful because they know how to leverage size with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency. But what worries them most is staying competitive in a world of increasing uncertainty and change, complicated by upstarts searching for ways to disrupt the industry. So what is the key to creating the kind of scale and agility necessary to stay competitive in this day and age? The answer is design. In Design to Grow, a Coca-Cola senior executive shares both the successes and failures of one of the world’s largest companies as it learns to use design to be both agile and big. In this rare and unprecedented behind-the-scenes look, David Butler and senior Fast Company editor, Linda Tischler, use plain language and easy-to-understand case studies to show how this works at Coca-Cola—and how other companies can use the same approach to grow their business. This book is a must-read for managers inside large corporations as well as entrepreneurs just getting started.

You have a great idea, now what? That first mile—where an innovation moves from an idea on paper to the market—is often plagued by failure. In fact, less than one percent of ideas launched by big companies end up having real impact. The ideas aren’t the problem. It’s the process. The First Mile focuses on the critical moment when an innovator moves from planning to reality. It is a perilous place where hidden traps snare entrepreneurs and roadblocks slow innovators inside large companies. In this practical and enlightening manual, strategic adviser Scott Anthony equips innovators with new tools, questions, and examples to speed through this crucial early stage of innovation. You’ll learn: • How to evaluate your idea’s strengths and weaknesses using the “DEFT” process—Document, Evaluate, Focus, and Test • Fourteen recipes from an “experiment cookbook” to gain confidence in your idea or business • Why “spinouts,” “wrong turns,” and other challenges commonly trip up innovation—and the practical strategies you can use to avoid them • Why innovators need to seek chaos in an age of constant change—and other essential leadership skills Drawing on his decade of experience as an innovation adviser and investor, Anthony describes hard-won lessons from disruptive start-ups and global giants alike. The First Mile will give you the knowledge and confidence to travel this perilous—but ultimately promising—terrain. The first mile can be a scary place, but you don’t have to traverse it alone. Book Description :

To compete with today's increasing globalization and rapidly evolving technologies, individuals and organizations must take their ability to learn—the foundation for continuous improvement, operational excellence, and innovation—to a much higher level. In Learn or Die, Edward D. Hess combines recent advances in neuroscience, psychology, behavioral economics, and education with key research on high-performance businesses to create an actionable blueprint for becoming a leading-edge learning organization. Learn or Die examines the process of learning from an individual and an organizational standpoint. From an individual perspective, the book discusses the cognitive, emotional, motivational, attitudinal, and behavioral factors that promote better learning. Organizationally, Learn or Die focuses on the kinds of structures, culture, leadership, employee learning behaviors, and human resource policies that are necessary to create an environment that enables critical and innovative thinking, learning conversations, and collaboration. The volume also provides strategies to mitigate the reality that humans can be reflexive, lazy thinkers who seek confirmation of what they believe to be true and affirmation of their self-image. Exemplar learning organizations discussed include the secretive Bridgewater Associates, LP; Intuit, Inc.; United Parcel Service (UPS); W. L. Gore & Associates; and IDEO.
