Book Description :

Unlike other texts, The Singing Book gets students singing on the very first day of class. The authors' "Sing first, talk later" philosophy encourages beginning students to sing without judging or constraining themselves, which is an essential prerequisite for learning repertoire and the more technical aspects of the vocal mechanism. The Singing Book's thoughtfully crafted three-part structure begins with motivational chapters, then systematically builds vocal strength and skill through carefully chosen repertoire, and finally introduces important information on the major aspects of developing healthy vocal techniques. Suitable for all skill levels and voice types, The Singing Book provides an anthology of over sixty songs, chosen specifically for the beginning singer. A 2-CD set (sold separately) provides melody, rhythm guides, and piano accompaniments for all selections in the anthology (with additional keys available on the Student Web Site), and the text's useful appendices feature methods for preparing song texts, extra warm-ups and vocalises, a guide to the International Phonetic Alphabet, and a brief primer on reading music.

Book Description :

During the past decades, "Dynamics of the singing voice" has successfully been established as a reference text for teachers of singing, singers, choral conductors and organists, speech and voice therapists, laryngologists and other health professionals, psychologists and those in linguistics. It discusses the physiological, psychological, musical and emotional aspects of the voice, particularly as they relate to singing but also to speaking. The book provides a greater understanding of how the voice works and the many factors involved in singing as well as an objective discussion of singing without reference to specific techniques. In this fifth edition, the author has now updated and rearranged the content. Furthermore she has added a new chapter on vocal pedagogic aspects in order to meet the requirements of the art of singing of the 21st century. Thus this new book provides the reader with the established concepts in combination with the latest knowledge about modern approaches to the singing voice.

Book Description :

Kristian Hardy, an old man closing out his days in the Amazon jungle, was once Kurt Hellmann, the youngest railway stationmaster in Germany. One day as he was serving in that capacity, a phone call caused him to panic and precipitate the deaths of 123 Jews en route to the concentration camps. Josef Mengele's remains having been identified, Hardy now regards himself as "the last Nazi mass murderer." He teeters just this side of despair, thanks to his love for Eduardo, his housekeeper's small son, and to his losing battle to maintain in good repair the Bechstein grand piano left behind by the plantation's previous owner. Unexpectedly, Hardy finds himself in love-with a young Jewish woman from New York, come to Brazil in search of butterflies, whom Hardy takes for his nemesis, the Nazi hunter of his recurring dreams. Hardy's youthful moment of panic had revealed to him the void at the center of what he had taken to be his values. He longs for punishment but has evaded it until now, when he openly courts an expiatory act. "In his first novel, Peter Moss has Hardy tell his tale with economy and precision, leading us through a moral landscape as tangled as the Amazon wilderness. Even the touch of sentimentality toward the end tells us much about Hardy, and the unobtrusive ambiguity at the close provides just the right touch of muted dissonance. The Singing Tree is a little gem." -Frank Wilson, New York Times

Book Description :

"Sonorous motifs and resonant archetypes form the backbone of this series conclusion... [the] prose is aesthetically romantic without romanticizing anything; scars of sadness are shown unflinchingly, but when Maerad registers a celebratory evening at the end as 'rich and vivid and luminous with joy snatched back from the dark,' she could be describing this series." -- KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review) In an increasingly battle-ravaged land, Maerad, Cadvan, and Hem desperately search for one another as they make their separate journeys. The Black Army is advancing north, and even as Maerad faces a mighty confrontation with the Landrost to save Innail, all of the Seven Kingdoms are threatened with bitter and devastating defeat. Yet in Maerad and Hem lives the secret to the mysterious Singing, and legend holds that if they release the music of Elidhu together, they have the power to defeat the Nameless One. Can brother and sister find each other in time to fight this all-powerful enemy, and are they strong enough -- even reunited -- to defeat him before all is lost?

Book Description :

The period between the Trail of Tears and the American Civil War was a turbulent time for the Cherokees. Now that epoch is evoked in a newly rediscovered novel by one of the early twentieth century's most prolific Native voices. John Milton Oskison was a mixed-blood Cherokee known for his short stories, essays, and activism on behalf of Indian causes. Although he was the author of several novels set in Oklahoma, The Singing Bird was never published and remained in a university archive until recently. It is his only full-length novel with a Native theme and quite possibly the first historical novel written by a Cherokee. Set in the 1840s and 1850s, the time of the Cherokee removal and of conflicts between the Eastern and Western Cherokees after they settled in Indian Territory, The Singing Bird relates the adventures of missionaries to the Cherokees who participate in the removal. Focusing on the tangled relationships among the missionaries-particularly the kindly, religious Daniel and his promiscuous, selfish wife, Ellen, the "Singing Bird" of the title-the story conveys a sense of the United States inflicting injustices and broken promises upon a peaceful people. The fictional characters mingle with such historical figures as Sequoyah and Sam Houston, embedding the novel in actual events. Through this story, Oskison has fashioned a detailed depiction of the cultural complexity within the Cherokee Nation. The Singing Bird is a vivid account of the Cherokees' genius for survival and celebrates Native American cultural revitalization-the creation, through a diverse alliance of people, of a future based on traditional Cherokee values. A key document in the development both of Oskison's talent as well as Native writing during an underappreciated era, this novel is also a unique addition to American literature and history.
