Book Description :

Going well beyond the merely descriptive, it spells out the crucial implications that the insights of set and setting hold for questions of medicine and drug policy. It suggests that drug policy has generally been barking up the wrong tree. Rather than focusing on the types of drugs people use, drug policy should focus on how people use them. In addition, greater medical efficacy gains can be achieved by focusing on considerations of set and setting, rather than on drug development. The book is unique in the broad, in-depth historical and cultural analysis it affords to the subject of context (set and setting) and its crucial role in shaping drug effects across times and cultures. It is the first book to deeply and thoroughly engage the idea that social and cultural forces and themes shape drug experiences within a culture, by providing an account which meshes together the social, the cultural, the medical, the historical and the pharmacological. .

Book Description :

Now synonymous with Sixties counterculture, LSD actually entered the American consciousness via the mainstream. Time and Life, messengers of lumpen-American respectability, trumpeted its grand arrival in a postwar landscape scoured of alluring descriptions of drug use while outlets across the media landscape piggybacked on their coverage with stories by turns sensationalized and glowing. Acid Hype offers the untold tale of LSD's wild journey from Brylcreem and Ivory soap to incense and peppermints. As Stephen Siff shows, the early attention lavished on the drug by the news media glorified its use in treatments for mental illness but also its status as a mystical--yet legitimate--gateway to exploring the unconscious mind. Siff's history takes readers to the center of how popular media hyped psychedelic drugs in a constantly shifting legal and social environment, producing an intricate relationship between drugs and media experience that came to define contemporary pop culture. It also traces how the breathless coverage of LSD gave way to a textbook moral panic, transforming yesterday's refined seeker of truths into an acid casualty splayed out beyond the fringe of polite society.

Book Description :

More than 50 years after Timothy Leary encouraged an entire generation to "turn on, tune in, drop out," there's been a resurgence of scientific research and popular interest in the use of psychedelic drugs for everything from therapeutic treatments to productivity boosts. The Psychedelic Reader collects the writings of luminaries from the dawn of the psychedelic era. With words from Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, Sir Julian Huxley, Ralph Metzner, and more, this this powerful anthology presents the entire psychedelic spectrum with both the seriousness and open-mindedness it requires. Once an alternative doorway into radical culture, LSD is now being re-examined for its possible mental health benefits. Take a visionary trip back to where it all began in The Psychedelic Reader... Half a century ago, the world changed forever when a Swiss chemist inadvertently ingested the experimental compound lysergic acid diethylamide. Many scientists expected LSD's radically psychoactive chemicals to revolutionize mainstream culture. The Psychedelic Review was founded in 1963 as a serious journal dedicated to the study of the potential of both natural and synthesized psychedelic substances. Presenting experts in the fields of anthropology, religion, pharmacology, poetry, and metaphysics, this pioneering journal had a dramatic impact on its times. Today, the benefits of LSD and other psychoactive drugs in treating depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD have sparked renewed research. The Psychedelic Reader offers a relevant guidebook to the foundations of a bold new era in mental health studies. Luminaries such as Alan Watts, Timothy Leary, Sir Julian Huxley, and Ralph Metzner contribute insights on a variety of fascinating and controversial subjects. From precise dosage guidelines to ruminations on the poetry of Herman Hesse, this powerful anthology presents the entire psychedelic spectrum with both the seriousness and open-mindedness it deserves.

Book Description :

I believe that the greatest long-term benefit of psychedelic experience is that it can help to reduce mental conflict to the point where calmness, relaxation, and clear thinking can prevail more fully in ones life. Being able to relax quickly and deeply at will for as long a period as desired is a great mental and physical benefit in this turbulent and uncertain world. Inner emotional and philosophical conflicts can interfere with deep relaxation and clear thought, but psychedelic experience can provide the opportunity to gradually work on resolving these issues and finding satisfactory answers and resolutions to them at deep intuitive levels. If nothing else, even short periods of deep relaxation and peace of mind during the day can be a healthy escape from stress. It is possible to remain the stationary axle to the turning wheel of destiny even when circumstances become less than pleasant. I believe that psychedelic experience is a learning experience. Whether the inner teacher is considered as spiritual or a mental process or both or neither, new ways of looking at things are somehow provided that can be later tested and evaluated in daily life. The harder lessons take longer to learn and to require more repetitions To the extent that the mind can be cleared of unnecessary residual tension and conflict, direct perception can be experienced. The world can become a more vivid, significant, and interesting place, and its miraculous quality can be better appreciated. I consider that psychedelic drugs, used with reasonable care, are quite safe and healthy when the cautions that I have mentioned are considered. Only one of my more than two hundred clients experienced any significant aftermath after taking a high dose (500 micrograms) of LSD, but she was a patient in a mental hospital who had a history of similar episodes prior to her LSD experience. I believe that psychedelic experience could very well be of benefit for psychotherapeutic purposes, but I think that pinning too much hope on a single session is much too optimistic. One needs to learn to use the experience to his own advantage. In addition, I am quite sure that it would be of value for the psychotherapist to be personally familiar with the spiritual and cosmic concepts that the experience has to offer. I am guessing that a well-motivated patient who could choose his or her own dosage and the time interval between sessions would benefit the most. I am also guessing that either a disturbed or a healthy person could became quite familiar the experience and that he could benefit from and enjoy occasional self-exploration sessions with low or moderate doses without needing any supervision. For some people, the low dose experience is a satisfying alternative to the more dangerous and addictive drugs used for recreation. A rock concert could be as diverting as sitting in a nightclub. A question still remains as to the extent to which the right dosages taken at the right time could gradually replace the need for alcohol. It would be interesting to give a group of people who were strongly attracted to alcohol or some other recreational drug access to quality controlled self-administered doses of a psychedelic drug and to see the extent to which the one could replace the other. The experiences are quite different, but they have in common the fact that they are both indeed altered states of consciousness. They are both highs but one is considerably safer than the others. I predict that there would be some success in such an endeavor and that having an experienced person to act as an ally during the transition would be of great help. The moderate dose stimulates meditation, relaxation, self-exploration, and creativity. The high dose permits exploration of abstract and religious concepts as well as permitting possible resolutions of emotional, psychological, and philosophical conflicts on deep intuitive levels. At all levels t

Book Description :

One of the most important books written on the effects of LSD on the human psyche. • Its authoritative research has great relevance to the current debate on drug legalization. • Prolific authors Robert Masters and Jean Houston are pioneer figures in the field of transpersonal psychology and founders of the Human Potentials Movement. The Varieties of Psychedelic Experience was published in 1966, just as the first legal restrictions on the use of psychedelic substances were being enacted. Unfortunately, the authors' pioneering work on the effects of LSD on the human psyche, which was viewed by its participants as possibly heralding a revolution in the study of the mind, was among the casualties of this interdiction. As a result, the promising results to which their studies attested were never fully explored. Nevertheless, their 15 years of research represents a sober and authoritative appraisal of what remains one of the most controversial developments in the study of the human psyche. Avoiding the wild excesses taken by both sides on this issue, this book is unique for the light it sheds on the possibilities and the limitations of psychedelic drugs, as well as on the techniques for working with them. With drug legalization an increasingly important issue, The Varieties of Psychedelic Experience provides a welcome and much needed contrast to the current hysteria that surrounds this topic.

Book Description :

There has been a renewed and growing interest in psychedelic drugs in the 21st century. Drawing on social-phenomenology, cognitive sociology, and 'set and setting' theory, I delineate how individuals use socially defined frameworks of understanding to attribute meaning to psychedelic experiences. These frameworks refer to the 'ready-made' schemes that structure subjective experience of objects, people, and a variety of other phenomena. Hence, I investigate how experiences with psychedelic drugs are meaningfully integrated into everyday understandings of reality. The main question guiding this thesis is: How do users of psychedelic drugs reconcile the experience with everyday waking consciousness and social reality? I attempt to answer this question in three phases that will 1) describe the quality of the psychedelic experience, 2) identify how individuals integrate the experience into everyday life, and 3) outline what these experiences can tell us about the social construction of everyday reality in the United States. This study uses conventional and directed content analysis of accounts originally collected between the years 1960-1964 as part of the Harvard Psilocybin Project. Specifically, I analyze over 200 narrative reports from 100 individuals collected from the Timothy Leary Papers archival collection held at the New York Public Library. These reports recount experiences with psilocybin, mescaline, and LSD. Using this data to describe the character of psychedelic experiences, how individuals integrate these experiences into everyday life, and what constitutes valid knowledge in the United States, I hope to 'demystify' the psychedelic experience and generate more useful ways of thinking about psychoactive substances.

Book Description :

ABOUT THE BOOK In the emerging worldview of our time, the two key paradigm revolutions are - a recognition of the multiple dimensions or worlds and recognition of the autonomy of meta-physical spirits inhabiting these many worlds. In this book, Dr. Metzner describe two multi-dimensional paradigms we have used in our entheogenic and meditative journeys of exploration and healing. One is the Tibetan Buddhist Wheel of Birth and Death - a mandala of our human journey through many lives and many worlds. Another multi-dimensional paradigm for shamanic journey practice is the World Axial Tree, with its upper, middle and lower worlds. In the last chapters, drawing on the perspectives of an expanded systems worldview and the Pythagorean octave principle, I present three divination meditations on worlds within and worlds beyond. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ralph Metzner, Ph.D. is a recognized pioneer in studies of consciousness and its transformations. He is a psychotherapist and Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies, where was also the Academic Dean for ten years in the 1980s. He collaborated with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert in the studies of psychedelic drugs at Harvard in the 1960s, and co-authored The Psychedelic Experience. His books include The Well of Remembrance, The Unfolding Self, Green Psychology and Birth of a Psychedelic Culture (with Ram Dass and Gary Bravo). This book is the seventh and last in a series on The Ecology of Consciousness. Vol. 1, The Expansion of Consciousness; Vol. 2, The Roots of War and Domination; Vol. 3, Alchemical Divination; Vol. 4, Mind Space and Time Stream; Vol. 5, The Life Cycle of the Human Soul; Vol. 6, The Six Pathways of Destiny. Book Description :

Psychedelics for spiritual, therapeutic, and problem-solving use • Presents practices for safe and successful psychedelic voyages, including the benefits of having a guide and how to be a guide • Reviews the value of psychedelics for healing and self-discovery as well as how LSD has facilitated scientific and technical problem-solving • Reveals how microdosing (ultr-low doeses) improve cognitive functioning, emotional balance, and physical stamina • This year 600,000 people in the U.S. alone will try LSD for the the first time, joining the 23 million who have already experimented with this substance Called “America’s wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use,” James Fadiman has been involved with psychedelic research since the 1960s. In this guide to the immediate and long-term effects of psychedelic use for spiritual (high dose), therapeutic (moderate dose), and problem-solving (low dose and microdose) purposes, Fadiman outlines best practices for safe, sacred entheogenic voyages learned through his more than 40 years of experience--from the benefits of having a sensitive guide during a session (and how to be one) to the importance of the setting and pre-session intention. Fadiman reviews the newest as well as the neglected research into the psychotherapeutic value of visionary drug use for increased personal awareness and a host of serious medical conditions, including his recent study of the reasons for and results of psychedelic use among hundreds of students and professionals. He reveals new uses for LSD and other psychedelics, including microdosing, extremely low doses, for improved cognitive functioning and emotional balance. Cautioning that psychedelics are not for everyone, he dispels the myths and misperceptions about psychedelics circulating in textbooks and clinics as well as on the internet. Exploring the life-changing experiences of Ram Dass, Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, and Huston Smith as well as Francis Crick and Steve Jobs, Fadiman shows how psychedelics, used wisely, can lead not only to healing but also to scientific breakthroughs and spiritual epiphanies.
