Book Description :

This revision of the very successful first edition provides a comprehensive overview for the 1990s of the management of preservation of information in both paper and electronic formats. It takes account of recent research in some of the more traditional areas, but, in wholly new chapters, also gives detailed consideration to the technical and professional issues which arise from the need to preserve electronic data and to create electronic data archives for the future. This new focus reflects the changing concerns of both academics and practitioners with access to information, permanence of electronic data, selection of what to preserve, environmental considerations, and digitization as a preservation tool. The preservation of information in an accessible form is the theme of John Feather's book, and at its core is advice and guidance on how to implement and manage a preservation policy. These issues are put into context by a look at international initiatives and at experiences in Europe, the USA and elsewhere. Library and information managers cannot fail to be concerned with the complexities of storing safely and accessibly the mass of different types of printed and electronic materials on the market. By taking a systematic look at the full range of techniques and options open to them, this practical guide will help them to ensure the future of their collections.

Twenty-two leading library and archival professionals address critical issues on the preservation and security of collections in cultural property institutions, including libraries, museums, and archives. Book Description :

Most librarians know the importance of disaster preparedness. Many disasters could have been prevented altogether or have had reduced impact if institutions had been better prepared. This resource guide suggests how disaster preparedness can be achieved at cultural institutions. Twenty-three basic resource articles are presented to introduce disaster preparedness. They deal with the safety of collections rather than the safety of staff, and related issues such as security and environmental control are not addressed. Of the materials that cover what to do once a disaster has occurred, most emphasize water damage because so many causes of disaster result in water damage. The resource guide is supplemented by a list of 23 selected readings. When a choice had to be made between a readily available source and one that was difficult to obtain, the hard-to-obtain one was included in the resource guide, and a reference to the other was provided in the bibliography. The basic processes for disaster preparedness include: (1) brainstorming potential disasters; (2) investigating responses to past disasters; (3) outlining a disaster plan; (4) determining remaining needs; and (5) developing recommendations. Book Description :

A brand new and fully updated edition of this seminal work on archival preservation. Access to archival material – the documentary heritage of people all over the world that gives them their identity and ensures their rights – is dependent on the survival of fragile materials: paper, parchment, photographic materials, audiovisual materials and, most recently, magnetic, optical and increasingly digital formats. The primary importance of such survival is widely acknowledged but sometimes overlooked in a rush to provide ever better means of access. But without the basic material, no services can be offered. Preservation is at the heart of archival activity. Archivists in all types of organizations face questions on how to plan a preservation strategy in less than perfect circumstances, or deal with a sudden emergency. This book considers the causes of threats to the basic material, outlines the preservation options available and offers flexible solutions applicable in a variety of situations. It offers a wide range of case studies and examples from international specialists. This revised edition includes additional material on digital preservation and green building as well as a new chapter on the management and training of volunteers, reflecting a key concern for many archival institutions. Key topics are: • Understanding archival materials and their characteristics • Managing digital preservation • Archive buildings and their characteristics • Safeguarding the building and its contents • Managing archival storage • Managing risks and avoiding disaster • Creating and using surrogates • Exhibiting archives • Handling the records • Managing a pest control programme • Training and the use of volunteers • Putting preservation into practice. Readership: Archivists, librarians, curators and enthusiasts, trained and untrained, in museums, local studies centres and voluntary societies in need of good clear advice.

Book Description :

As games grow ever-more ubiquitous in our culture and communities, they have become popular staples in public library collections and are increasing in prominence in academic ones. Many librarians, especially those who are not themselves gamers or are only acquainted with a handful of games, are ill-prepared to successfully advise patrons who use games. This book provides the tools to help adult and youth services librarians to better understand the gaming landscape and better serve gamers in discovery of new games—whether they are new to gaming or seasoned players—through advisory services. This book maps all types of games—board, roleplaying, digital, and virtual reality—providing all the information needed to understand and appropriately recommend games to library users. Organized by game type, hundreds of descriptions offer not only bibliographic information (title, publication date, series, and format/platform), but genre classifications, target age ranges for players, notes on gameplay and user behavior type, and short descriptions of the game's basic premise and appeals.
