Book Description :

The Ordos Basin: Sedimentological Research for Hydrocarbons Exploration provides an overview of sedimentological approaches used in the lacustrine Ordos Basin (but also applicable in other marine and lacustrine basins) to make hydrocarbon exploration more efficient. Oil exploration is becoming increasingly focused on tight sandstone reservoirs and shales. The development of these reservoirs, particularly regarding the sedimentary processes and the resulting sediments, are still poorly understood. Exploration and exploitation of such reservoirs requires new insights into the lateral and vertical facies changes, and as already indicated above, the knowledge surrounding facies and how they change in deep-water environments is still relatively unclear. Covers several geological aspects so the reader may well understand the context of the various chapters Explores and explains the important relationship between sedimentology and hydrocarbon explorations Highlights the significance of sedimentological aspects (facies, porosity, etc.) for basin analysis and the development of energy resources

Book Description :

Lacustrine Shale Gas: Case Study from the Ordos Basin examines the special sedimentation and formation environment based on the actual exploration of lacustrine shale gas. Using the Chang7 black shale of Yanchang formation in Ordos basin as an example, this book deeply dissects the Lacustrine shale geological characteristics and offers fresh insights into Lacustrine shale geochemistry, shale reservoir, hydrocarbon accumulation and resource evaluation. The book not only enriches, develops and contributes to new theories of shale gas exploration, but also contributes to a new research field, lacustrine shale gas exploration. Shale gas is the mixed phase natural gas that includes adsorbed phase and free phase gas. It is accumulated in the rich organic matter in shale. In recent years, with great changes in global oil and gas exploration and energy supply situation, shale gas has attracted a lot of attention, becoming the focus of the energy industry. Reflects the development of world-leading shale gas exploration technology in China Analyzes first-hand experimental data and scientific research methods on the geological characteristics of lacustrine shale gas Systematically discusses the theory of lacustrine shale gas exploration, from source rock characteristics, shale reservoir characteristics, and shale gas accumulation, to shale gas resources evaluation Provides practical guidance by using the Ordos basin as example

Book Description :

In general, intracontinental basins are nearly symmetric in geometry, lack of deformation, quite large in area, and overall subsidence curves are exponential in shape, showing relatively slow, long-lived, and continuous but decreasing subsidence rates. However, some examples from China, Africa, and Australia, including the Ordos basin, the subject of this dissertation, are similar to those of North America in that they are large, very long-lived basins, but differ in that they tend to be asymmetric, have episodic subsidence histories, and are often surrounded by zones of strong intracontinental deformation. In order to understand what mechanisms cause the difference between Ordos Basin and those North American examples, how this long-lived basin evolved over time, I chose the south Ordos Basin as my research area. In addition, I was also interested in understanding the sedimentary response to intracontinental deformation during the Mesozoic, in particular during deposition of the Yanchang Formation during Triassic time.

Book Description :

This report summarizes preliminary 2-D reactive-transport simulations on the injection, storage and transport of supercritical CO2 in dolostone formations in the Ordos Basin in China. The purpose of the simulations was to evaluate the role that basin heterogeneity, permeability, CO2 flux, and geochemical reactions between the carbonate geology and the CO2 equilibrated brines have on the evolution of porosity and permeability in the storage reservoir. The 2-D simulation of CO2 injection at 103 ton/year corresponds to CO2 injection at a rate of 3 x 105 ton/year in a 3-D, low permeable rock. An average permeability of 10 md was used in the simulation and reflects the upper range of permeability reported for the Ordos Basin Majiagou Group. Transport and distribution of CO2 between in the gas, aqueous, and solid phases were followed during a 10-year injection phase and a 10-year post injection phase. Our results show that CO2 flux and the spatial distribution of reservoir permeability will dictate the transport of CO2 in the injection and post injection phases. The injection rate of supercritical CO2 into low permeable reservoirs may need to be adjusted to avoid over pressure and mechanical damage to the reservoir. Although it should be noted that 3-D simulations are needed to more accurately model pressure build-up in the injection phase. There is negligible change in porosity and permeability due to carbonate mineral dissolution or anhydrite precipitation because a very small amount of carbonate dissolution is required to reach equilibrium with respect these phases. Injected CO2 is stored largely in supercritical and dissolved phases. During the injection phase, CO2 is transport driven by pressure build up and CO2 buoyancy.

Book Description :

In this dissertation, three simulators (i.e. TOUGH2MP, TOUGHREACT and FLAC3D) were used to simulate the complex physical and chemical interactions induced by CO2 sequestration. The simulations were done instages, ranging from the two phase (water and CO2) fluid flow (H2), through coupled hydro-mechanical effects (H2M) and geochemical responses (i.e. CO2-water-rock interactions (H2C)), to the extension of CCS to CCUS by the application of combined geothermal production and CO2 sequestration technologies. The findings of this study are essential for a thorough understanding of the complex interactions in the multiphase, multicomponent porous media controlled by different physical and chemical mechanisms. Furthermore, the simulation results will provide an invaluable reference for field operations in CCS projects, especially for the full-integration pilot scale CCS project launched in the Ordos Basin. Subsequently, a preliminary site selection scheme for the combined geothermal production and CO2 sequestration was set up, which considered various factorsinvolved in site selection, ranging from safety, economical, environmental and technical issues. This work provides an important framework for the combined geothermal production and CO2 sequestration project. However, further numerical and field studies are still needed to improve on a series of criteria and related parameters necessary for a better understanding of the technology.
