From the Finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls to the latest on the gnostic writings, the Nag Hammadi codices, new information is unearthed practically every day to help us understand the lifestyles and beliefs of our religious ancestors. The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha is the foremost example of this work. All the important documents (sixty-five in all, published in two separate volumes) from the period between the Old and the New Testaments have been collected in this landmark work. The foremost international authority on each book has been selected to contribute a new translation (sometimes for the first time), an introduction, and critical notes for each of the texts, with all work taking advantage of the very latest in scriptural scholarship. These texts are of great value to all people whose religious heritage focuses on the Bible for insight into the development of doctrine. By studying the pseudepigrapha, we can increase our knowledge of the beginnings of the Christian religion, as well as the development of Judaism after the close of the Hebrew Bible. Scholars, Bible students, professionals of all religious groups and denominations, and lay people---indeed, all those who can be signified as "People of the Book:" Christians, Jews, Mormons, Muslims---will be interested in these translations. The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha is truly a work of international importance, and Hendrickson Publishers is pleased to offer it in this economical paperback edition.

Book Description :

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of the Bible in the medieval world. For the Anglo-Saxons, literary culture emerged from sustained and intensive biblical study. Further, at least to judge from the Old English texts which survive, the Old Testament was the primary influence, both in terms of content and modes of interpretation. Though the Old Testament was only partially translated into Old English, recent studies have shown how completely interconnected Anglo-Latin and Old English literary traditions are. Old English Literature and the Old Testament considers the importance of the Old Testament from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, from comparative to intertextual and historical. Though the essays focus on individual works, authors, or trends, including the Interrogationes Sigewulfi, Genesis A, and Daniel, each ultimately speaks to the vernacular corpus as a whole, suggesting approaches and methodologies for further study.

Book Description :

Dating the Old Testament addresses the subject of when the books of the Bible were written. It explains why the books of Genesis through Deuteronomy are a literary unity, and how the Egyptian background for these books support a date of writing during the exodus generation. It provides a detailed critique of the Documentary Hypothesis, the theory that Genesis through Joshua were created from four different sources usually labelled J, E, D, and P. It provides extensive evidence that all of Isaiah was written by Isaiah himself, and shows why Isaiah may have had a role in the collection and publication of other Old Testament books. It describes why the book of Daniel should be considered a product of the early Persian era and not the much later Maccabean period. The book contains a discussion of how the Hebrew language changed during the Old Testament era, and how this can be used to help date the books of the Old Testament.

Book Description :

This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.
