Book Description :

In this volume, Georg Strecker profiles the New Testament with major treatments of Paul, Jesus, the Synoptics, John, and the General Letters. Strecker argues for a rich mosaic of theologies rather than one single New Testament theology. He adopts a redaction-critical appraoch and thus highlights the background of and relationships among the New Testament writings. Strecker's relentless pursuit of the distinctive views of each specific writing allows the complexity of the New Testament to emerge.

Book Description :

Preface " Tell me, sir, " the sincere young woman inquired anxiously of the preacher, " What is the Bible all about?" After serious thought the preacher replied, " My girl, the Bible is all about Jesus." That, essentially, is the message of the New Testament. It is all about Jesus. From the story of the humble birth in Bethlehem as recorded in the Gospels, to the scene of the glorious exaltation as King of Kings and Lord of Lords as depicted in the book of Revelation, the subject is the same. At the beginning of this study of the New Testament, the student will do well to look for the Lord Jesus Christ and His teachings. Before a study of the books of the New Testament is undertaken in systematic fashion, two preliminary matters of great importance must be considered. The New Testament has a background which, when properly considered, will help to illuminate the books themselves. Chapter 1, therefore, deals with the three most important areas of this setting: the Hebrew, the Greek, and the Roman. Following this treatment, the chapter presents an overview, or " bird's eye view, " of the whole New Testament. This approach, sometimes called the " synthetic, " is vital to acquaint the student with the major divisions or parts of the New Testament and the unity of the whole. Having completed chapter 1, you, the student, are ready to investigate each book separately. Chapters 2 through 12 consider the respective writers and their writings--the purpose, outline, main content, and leading features. The attention of the reader is called to " Application Activities" at the end of each chapter and the bibliography at the end ofthe book. These serve at least a dual purpose: (1) They provide opportunity for you to carry on your studies in a more detailed and intensive manner whenever you wish to do so; (2) They provide information regarding matters which could be given only passing mention. You will find that the " Discussion Questions" at the end of the chapters will be valuable for testing your grasp of the materials you have studied. Thanks are due to Moody Press, Chicago, for their kind permission given to use materials from my book, "An Outline of New Testament Survey, 1960. The outlines, charts, and one quotation in chapter 11 have been taken from that work. On then to study. May it be done in the spirit of 2 Timothy 2:15 and result in the enrichment of the life of all who undertake the task at hand. Walter M. Dunnett

Book Description :

From the bestselling author of The Lamb's Supper and Signs of Life comes an illuminating work that unlocks the many mysteries of the Catholic sacrament of the Eucharist. Long before the New Testament was a document, it was a sacrament. Jesus called the Eucharist by the name Christians subsequently gave to the latter books of the Holy Bible. It was the "New Covenant," the "New Testament," in his blood. Christians later extended the phrase to cover the books produced by the apostles and their companions; but they did so because these were the books that could be read at Mass. This simple and demonstrable historical fact has enormous implications for the way we read the Bible. In Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church, Dr. Scott Hahn undertakes an examination of some of Christianity's most basic terms to discover what they meant to the sacred authors, the apostolic preachers, and their first hearers. Moreover, at a time when the Church is embarking on a New Evangelization he draws lessons for Christians today to help solidify their understanding of the why it is Catholics do what Catholics do. Anyone acquainted with the rich body of writing that flows so inspiringly from the hand and heart of Dr. Hahn knows that he brings profound personal insight to his demonstrated theological expertise,” writes Cardinal Donald Wuerl in the foreword to the book. Consuming the Word continues in that illustrious tradition. It brings us a powerful and welcome guide as we take our place in the great and challenging work in sharing the Good News.

Readers are informed of contemporary debates that have arisen from literary criticism, such as the questions of intertextuality and the uses of allegory. Also discussed are the uses of the Bible in the first century. For the second edition two entirely new chapters on 'Jesus and Scripture' and 'James and 1-3 John' have been added, as well as full revisions to the text where necessary to take account of changes and developments in scholarship.
