Book Description :

Mysticism has a place in all the major world religions. This book begins with the assertion that Christian Mysticism, in its most essential state, is the mystery of Christ's union with God. Certain major theologians including Albert Ritschl and Karl Barth have stood in opposition to the concept of mysticism and have even suggested that it is opposite to the heart of the Gospel and indeed the whole Bible. Yet Bouyer here makes a strong argument for understanding Mysticism as central to the Christian faith. This analysis of mysticism is contrasted with its place in pagan religions and its role throughout Christian history. In so doing, Bouyer reveals the significance of mysticism for understanding the meaning of life.

Book Description :

Although Paul used language similar to the religions and cultures of his time, he had a unique understanding of the “mystery” of God. The once-hidden plan of God was revealed and fulfilled in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Saul of Tarsus experienced a fundamental change when he encountered the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. This vision gave him new direction and purpose and profoundly changed his understanding of God’s plan for humanity. Paul often uses the phrase “in Christ” or its variations to describe this plan. Being in Christ results in transformation into Christ’s likeness of holiness and love through the indwelling Holy Spirit. Those in Christ form a new community that crosses ethnic barriers, is bound together in fellowship with the Triune God, and fulfills its purpose of holiness before him. Paul’s answer to the struggles people face is simple: when one is united with Christ by dying to the old self and committing to his supremacy, one will find victory over any force opposed to us in this world. This book explores one of the most profound claims in the New Testament that demands a response of its readers.

Book Description :

What can God and eros have to do with each other? Against Nietzsche's claim that Christianity poisoned eros, God and Eros rereads the mystery of human love as an ecstatic sharing in the mystery of the triune God who is Love. Body, sex, and affectivity, far from being locked in a lower order called "nature," instead belong to a sacramental order that is permeated by the call to love. In presentations designed to appeal to a general audience, the faculty of the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family, Melbourne, approach this mystery through the lens of St. John Paul II's "theology of the body," with the goal to both introduce and more clearly illumine its major features. In particular, emphasis is placed on how a theology of the body is not just about "sex." Rather, it is above all about how each and every person--no matter what her state of life--is stamped by the watermark of being-from and being-for. Working within this broader perspective, God and Eros offers the reader a lively, engaging, and at times challenging tour of the full "ethos of the nuptial mystery."

Book Description :

Much has been written about marriage from the sociological and psychological point of view and as an object of civil and canon law. But in terms of systematic theology this treatment of marriage as a sacrament may very well be unique. Every effort has been made to keep the text from becoming too academic while at the same time providing the average educated reader with a wealth of original insights into the "mystery" of marriage: in creation and as transformed by Christ. Chapters cover sacramental consent, bond, and covenant as well as the quest for the sign. Such thorny problems as the role of faith in the sacrament, marriage with an unbaptized person, the most pressing ecumenical questions and the relationship between the sacrament and contraception are studied in depth. Finally, the "sacrament of family" is treated at some length with an eye to its social and redemptive dimensions.

Book Description :

An Exposition of the Mystery which was kept secret since the world began; wherein the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity is manifested in the Glory-Man, the Lord JESUS, and that Christ's bearing the Iniquity of our Sin in his Sufferings was the Atonement he made to God for the Elect; set forth against the Socinian and Neonomian triumphs, and against some other Cowardly Professions. It is likewise demonstrated that an Interest in Christ is built alone upon the Free, Absolute and Everlasting Love of the Father, Son, and Spirit, towards an elect Remnant in Christ Jesus, against the Arminians. And therein is some account given of the Mystery of the Elect and their Union in Christ Jesus before the Foundation of the World; proving that their Free Grace Union according to God's Ancient Settlements was never, as to the Comprehensive and Supreme Relation of the elect in Jesus Christ destroyed by their Subordinate Nature-Fall in Adam. To these things are added a Vindication of the Excellency of God's Free Grace against the whole Arminian Scheme. And lastly, the Spiritual Operations of the Holy Ghost are Vindicated, as the Immediate Spring, Life and Source of all True Religion. This book 3 of 4 Books

Book Description :

Introduction Following are some reflections upon Finding God's Will as understood thru the Mystery of the sacrifice of Abraham, the Father of Faith, of his Son, Isaac. Chapter one considers the command of God that stopped Abraham from completing the sacrifice of Isaac and why. Chapter two goes on to show how God opened Abraham's eyes, both naturally and supernaturally, to find a suitable substitute for Isaac's sacrifice. Chapter three speaks shortly about how God sees what we can never see; that is, the distant future and he arranges all our activities thruways unknown to us, to accomplish his Holy Will in our lives. Chapter four speaks about the gift of ourselves to others, especially to God, since all belongs to him to use as he sees fit for our eternal salvation. Abraham knew this and this is what we reflect as being the essential wisdom of Abraham. Chapter five ends by considering the significance of charity and how the gift is more than what we receive in return since it unites us to God and nothing can equal that gift of peace which is the result: "Peace I leave with you." Chapters six thru eleven continue the reflections with the example of the life of Jesus (6-8), using the spiritual senses to strengthen our union with God's will (9-10); lastly, examples from two Mystic Saints of the Catholic Church, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross. We are often confronted in our lives with important choices and these choices tug at our hearts since we have to decipher the most important from the least important things we hold. A person who sees deeply and renders his life totally at the service of God, such as Abraham, will always choose that which is more lasting and better for his eternal life with God. While not everyone can have the same faith as Abraham, all can exercise their faith to the degree that God gives. Every day we face challenges that call upon our faith and the values we hold dear. The more we follow Christ Jesus, the more we can abide in the one value that no one can take from us and that is the peace he has given to us. Though his peace comes at a price, there is no substitute for it and we can always integrate all the other things which peripherally stand around that peace, to be of less interest to us. As Catholics, we are faced with living our faith or living with our "Isaacs" rather than letting God use our "Isaacs" to bring us to him. God's providential plan has given us this example of Abraham to us so that we can learn to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to give to God what belongs to God. God wants us freely to choose him over our Isaacs, which keep us from him, but only the Spirit and his grace can lead to that wisdom.
