Book Description :

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Largely reorganised and much expanded in this second edition, Practice and Procedures brings together in a single volume general methods of pain assessment and presents the wide range of therapies that can be provided by a range of health care disciplines. Authored by a multidisciplinary team of experts, chapters can stand alone for readers looking for a general overview of the methods of techniques for pain management available to them or work to complement chapters in the preceeding three volumes, providing practical procedures and applications in the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain. The book is divided into three parts. Part One covers the principles of measurement and diagnosis, including history taking and examination, the selection of pain measures, diagnostic tests and novel imaging techniques. Part Two discusses the full range of therapeutic protocols available, from pharmacological therapies, through psychological techniques, physical therapy and international procedures, to techniques specific to pain assessment and management in paediatric patients. Part Three provides information on planning, conducting, analysing and publishing clinical trials, with invaluable guidance on the techniques of systematic review and meta-analysis in pain research. Part Four considers the role of multidisciplinary pain management teams, their organization, their place within different health care systems, and how best to manage change when implementing such a service. Part Five concludes the volume, investigating the use of guidelines, standards and quality improvement initiatives in the management of post-operative pain, and discussing the expert medicolegal report.

Book Description :

Up to 35% of adults suffer from chronic pain, and a substantial number of these patients are admitted to hospitals every year. A major concern of these patients is whether the pain will be adequately controlled during hospitalization. these patients are more likely to have poor pain control and may experience an exacerbation of their co-exisitng chronic pain condition during hospital admission. Adequate pain control is directly related to clinical outcomes, length of hospital stay, and patient satisfaction. A considerable body of evidence demonstrates the medical, social, and economic benefits of satisfactory inpatient pain control. Currently, there are limited pain control guidelines to address this challenging inpatient population. In fact, there are no guidelines outlinign best practices for postoperative pain control in patients with chronic pain. The complex nature of chronic pain and a dearth of publications addressing the concerns of these patients make the creation of relevant guidelines difficult. The goal of this book is to equip clinicians to provide safe and effective management of hospitalized patients with co-existing chronic pain. Each chapter addresses a particular clinical question and is written by an expert in the field. Chapters describe basic principles and specific clinical situations commonly encountered during the care of patients with co-existing chronic pain in hospital settings.

Book Description :

Like management of disease, management of pain is as old as the human race. When patients come to us with their pain, they present us with a wonderful opportunity: the chance to understand them, to understand how their pain is affecting their lives, the challenge of discovering what is causing their pain, and finally the opportunity to prescribe medications and lifestyle changes to help them gain relief from their pain. It is hoped that this book will provide the latest evidence-based updates on pain management in special circumstances and will serve as a ready reference for those embarking on pain management. Its intent is not to be a heavy book that can only be stored on a bookshelf, but a pocket-sized reference that can be carried, be easily navigated, and be available whenever a conceptual gap compromises pain physicians and their ability to treat their patients.

Book Description :

Chronic pain is a significant and sometimes debilitating medical problem, which has a significant impact in our economy and quality of life. It is perhaps the most common reason for Americans to seek medical care and is the leading cause of disability. Despite several options of chronic pain treatment including medications and interventional procedures, the long-term effect of current treatments remains limited. Therefore, it is both necessary and timely to seek complementary and alternative treatments as a part of integrative medicine for chronic pain management. Acupuncture is a well-known modality of complementary and alternative medicine that may help improve pain and related comorbid symptoms, decrease drug dependency and usage, and lead to better quality of life. Although acupuncture has been used over thousands of years for the treatment of many clinical conditions including clinical pain, many factors remain unclear to healthcare providers with regard to its effectiveness, mechanisms and side effects. This book consists of fourteen interrelated chapters to provide the following categories of up-to-date information: 1) the general concept of acupuncture and its role in pain management; 2) current research evidence of acupuncture mechanisms; 3) acupuncture and neuroimaging and 4) clinical data on various modalities of acupuncture therapy including auricular acupuncture and their role in treating pain conditions such as low back and neck pain, headaches, osteoarthritis pain, abdominal and pelvic pain, neuropathic pain, myofascial pain, cancer-related pain, postoperative pain, and pediatric pain. Moreover, a chapter on Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, is included to discuss its role in chronic pain treatment. There is also a chapter to discuss the challenges in evaluating acupuncture trial outcomes and the current research effort on this issue. We trust that this book will help healthcare providers to gain comprehensive knowledge on the role of acupuncture therapy in pain management.

Book Description :

This new edition reflects the evolution of the field including new topics for historical relevance regarding the changing attitudes towards opioid prescription and use. The book points out that the realization of liberalizing use is almost uncontrollably linked to unnecessary patient death. Similarly, the evidence is increasingly confirming that interventional pain procedures work. New evidence presents, for example, that Percutaneous Lysis of Adhesions is an effective therapeutic modality that has advantages over other options due to its cost effective nature and long term outcomes reducing the need for additional procedures including surgeries and more and more expensive medications. Awareness about the consequences of bad outcomes leads to medicolegal complications. The inevitable trigger is bad outcome which is often related to knowledge, training, experience, as well as equipment design. Some of the examples and lessons learned from the medicolegal arena may soon prevent such occurrences.
