Book Description :

This story of unspeakable horror begins when a young governess arrives at an English estate to oversee two precocious, orphaned youngsters. There's also a motherly cook, but these four aren't alone - they're haunted by fears and phantoms and by ghastly shadows. The governess and cook are terrified, but the children are possessed by the spirits and welcome their visitations. The governess learns the spirits are those of the former caretaker and maid, both perverse, who corrupted the souls of the innocents. In a final scene, full of fear and terror, she learns that the two are now inseparable the evil and the innocents. -- Publisher.

Book Description :

This is a novel about adopting convenient truths. On one level it is the story of a child, Missie Missinger, whose life experience is not sufficient to allow her to explain the desperate truth of her situation. Her attempts to rationalise her feelings lead her into real danger. It is also a portrait of the willingness of young children to try to accept situations that they know are wrong, and attempt to live with them. On another level it is the story of Olexander Shevchenko, a young man who has left his own home to begin a new life in a small town in Australia. His life has been a war zone and conflicts of forced loyalties. In spite of this he is unprepared for the small-mindedness of people in his new country that has been shielded from many of the harsher truths of foreign countries. Like Missie, he is innocent - she, because she is a child and has only the knowledge of a child; he, because his innocence was not able to flourish in the corruption of survival as a war-child and refugee and now, in this new place, it begins to surface again. This is a narrative set in the 1950s with truths that are still convenient today.

Book Description :

The fallibility of the criminal justice system and the duplicity of the image: Taryn Simon's acclaimed and beautifully produced first book, available in an expanded edition with previously unpublished images, essays and archival material Taryn Simon's earliest body of work, The Innocents(2002), documents the stories of individuals who served time in prison for violent crimes they did not commit. The series centers on the question of photography as credible witness and arbiter of justice, since a primary cause of wrongful conviction is mistaken identification. Suspected perpetrators are identified through photographs and lineups, a procedure that relies on the assumption of precise visual memory. But through exposure to composite sketches, mug shots, Polaroids and lineups, eyewitness memory can change. In these cases, photography offered the criminal-justice system a tool that transformed innocent citizens into criminals. Simon photographed these men and one woman at sites that had particular significance to their illegitimate conviction: the scene of misidentification, the scene of arrest, the scene of the crime, or the scene of the alibi. The Innocentswas first exhibited at MoMA PS1 in 2003. The 2020 edition of the book includes previously unpublished images and new essays by Innocence Project cofounders Peter Neufeld and Barry C. Scheck, and by professor and curator Nicole R. Fleetwood and criminal justice reform activist Tyra Patterson.

Book Description :

One of the most famous travel books ever written by an American, The Innocents Abroad is Mark Twain’s irreverent and incisive commentary on nineteenth century Americans encountering the Old World. Come along for the ride as Twain and his unsuspecting travel companions visit the Azores, Tangiers, Paris, Rome, the Vatican, Genoa, Gibraltar, Odessa, Constantinople, Cairo, the Holy Land and other locales renowned in history. No person or place is safe from Twain’s sharp wit as it impales both the conservative and the liberal, the Old World and the New. He uses these contrasts to “find out who we as Americans are,” notes Leslie A. Fiedler. But his travelogue demonstrates that, in our attempt to understand ourselves, we must first find out what we are not. With an Introduction Michael Meyer and an Afterword by Leslie A. Fiedler

Before long, however, accusations start to fly; national media and federal authorities descend; and what seemed like a senseless act of violence begins to appear like something even more disturbing - with more victims waiting in the shadows.

Book Description :

"It has been said that the part of Medieval history which scholars find most challenging to elucidate is the emotional life of Medieval families. Indeed, it is an area that is surrounded by a sense of mystery and superstition. In The Rescue of the Innocents, Ronald Finucane seeks to examine this area by focusing on the influence of miracles on the lives of children during the Middle Ages. Finucane explores rampant reports of "miraculous" happenings, delving into the experiences of six hundred children who were rescued, cured, or resuscitated - it was thought - by the holy dead. He analyzes the impact that these wonders had on the families of the children, comparing the differences between experiences of families in the north and the south of Europe. The reactions of mothers in particular, in comparison to fathers and other kin, are studied for their distinctive quality. In addition, Finucane breaks with the traditions of Medieval historians and concentrates on only one type of source: hagiographical records."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Even the innocent don't kiss and tell... “…the quick pacing will keep readers engrossed in this series kickoff as Alice and Charlie try to sort through the soap opera that is their new lives and figure out who they can trust. It’s Gossip Girl for Connecticut’s Gold Coast.” –Publishers Weekly The Innocents weaves a saga of nail-biting drama, breathless romance, and gothic mystery perfect for fans of ABC's Revenge. Though they share the same blood, Alice and Charlie couldn’t be more different. Alice is older (by one year and one day), shy and reserved, a cool blonde, a painter, a reader, a thinker. Charlie is feisty and uninhibited, a wild brunette, the kind of girl who punches a bully right in the mouth. They hate each other. They love each other. They stand by each other, when no one else will. They’re sisters. Then their parents divorce. Soon, Alice, Charlie, and their mother are leaving their old life behind. They’re saying goodbye to their cramped Cambridge apartment and driving along the rocky Connecticut coastline—to their stepfather's summer estate in the wealthy town of Serenity Point. The minute they drive through the gates, they wish they never had. Their arrival reopens old wounds, memories of lost loves, best friends—and bitter rivals. The people of Serenity Point thought the past was dead and buried. They were wrong.

*** Winner of the 2012 Costa First Novel Award *** *** Winner of the 2013 Harold U. Ribalow Prize, the 2013 Sam Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature, the 2012 Costa First Novel Award, and the 2012 National Jewish Book Award for Fiction *** A smart and slyly funny tale of love, temptation, confusion, and commitment; a triumphant and beautifully executed recasting of Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. Newly engaged and unthinkingly self-satisfied, twenty-eight-year-old Adam Newman is the prize catch of Temple Fortune, a small, tight-knit Jewish suburb of London. He has been dating Rachel Gilbert since they were both sixteen and now, to the relief and happiness of the entire Gilbert family, they are finally to marry. To Adam, Rachel embodies the highest values of Temple Fortune; she is innocent, conventional, and entirely secure in her community--a place in which everyone still knows the whereabouts of their nursery school classmates. Marrying Rachel will cement Adam's role in a warm, inclusive family he loves. But as the vast machinery of the wedding gathers momentum, Adam feels the first faint touches of claustrophobia, and when Rachel's younger cousin Ellie Schneider moves home from New York, she unsettles Adam more than he'd care to admit. Ellie--beautiful, vulnerable, and fiercely independent--offers a liberation that he hadn't known existed: a freedom from the loving interference and frustrating parochialism of North West London. Adam finds himself questioning everything, suddenly torn between security and exhilaration, tradition and independence. What might he be missing by staying close to home?

But unknown to them, something much larger is going on: the city is involved in a grand dance. Only one man can see it, but he's at a loss to explain what it is. That becomes the quest of David Peters. David Peters has been unemployed for months. The former brilliant marketing guy is caught in a relentless downward spiral. During one of these explorations David devises a new twist on time-lapse photography, revealing secret patterns of behavior in everyday life. He combines his time-lapse ingenuity with satellite images to uncover patterns on a grand scale. Now, if only someone would take him seriously. The government takes David quite seriously when they realize he has uncovered a human catastrophe they are desperately trying to hide. When his wife becomes a victim herself, David's conspiracy theories become all too real. He seeks the advice of an expert, only to discover that he has tapped into a primal legacy, and the government wants a piece of it. At every turn the stakes get larger, until finally David finds himself at the crossroads of good and evil. Now his creativity and brilliance will be put to the ultimate test.
