Book Description :

Empathy and the Historical Understanding of the Human Past is a comprehensive consideration of the role of empathy in historical knowledge, informed by the literature on empathy in fields including history, psychoanalysis, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and sociology. The book seeks to raise the consciousness of historians about empathy, by introducing them to the history of the concept and to its status in fields outside of history. It also seeks to raise the self-consciousness of historians about their use of empathy to know and understand past people. Defining empathy as thinking and feeling, as imagining, one’s way inside the experience of others in order to know and understand them, Thomas A. Kohut distinguishes between the external and the empathic observational position, the position of the historical subject. He argues that historians need to be aware of their observational position, of when they are empathizing and when they are not. Indeed, Kohut advocates for the deliberate, self-reflective use of empathy as a legitimate and important mode of historical inquiry. Insightful, cogent, and interdisciplinary, the book will be essential for historians, students of history, and psychoanalysts, as well as those in other fields who seek to seek to know and understand human beings.

Book Description :

The Human Tradition in Colonial America is a vivid study of 16 individuals who lived during the colonial period of American history. Written by leading scholars, these mini-biographies highlight the exploits and actions of both well-known and obscure individuals whose lives provide insight into the time in which they lived. Editors Ian K. Steele and Nancy Rhoden have assembled the stories of a diverse pool of characters, ranging from a former slave turned abolitionist to a Massachusetts mother who stirred up a controversy concerning gender relations in Puritan New England. While well-known figures such as Pocahontas and Squanto are included, this book focuses on a variety of less historically conspicuous individuals, such as Gabriel Sagard and Bryan Sheehan, whose stories illuminate life in the colonial period. Readers will meet Robert Bolling, the relative of Thomas Jefferson who never quite achieved the success of his more famous relation, and the sixteenth-century Spanish explorer Alvar Nunez, Cabeza,de Vaca, who explored Florida and later lived among the Native Americans. Readers will also be introduced to Pierre Pouchot, a French soldier, cartographer, and diplomat who wrote an account of the French and Indian War. Entertaining as well as enlightening, The Human Tradition in Colonial America brings the colonial period to life through the stories of the colorful participants who helped mold the British dependency that would eventually become the United States.

Book Description :

How do we identify and measure human disease in the past? In the absence of soft tissue, paleoepidemiologists have developed ingenious ways of assessing illness and mortality in archaeological populations. In this volume, the key methods of epidemiology are outlined for non-specialists, showing the importance of studying prevalence over incidence, adjustments needed in studying past groups, how to compare studies, and the dangers of assessing occupation based upon bone evidence. A model for planning a proper paleoepidemiological study concludes the volume. Both as an introduction to epidemiology for archaeologists, and as a primer on archaeological analysis for epidemiologists, this book should serve the needs of both populations.

Book Description :

Part One surveys the striking changes (and continuities) in the mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic, evangelical/fundamentalist, and black churches, including developments in their public worship and their views of world mission. Due attention is given to the challenges and creative opportunities posed by ecumenical movements, by the rise in women's consciousness and in racial and ethnic awareness, by new attitudes toward Jewish-Christian relations, and by the concerns of Third World peoples and churches. Part Two examines foundational developments in theological education and in the traditional academic disciplines of Bible, systematic theology, Christian ethics, and church history. Also considered at length are the changing strategies in religious education and the complex interplay between religion and science. Part Three offers a probing discussion on the relation between Christianity and contemporary American culture.

Book Description :

This essay collection explores the concept of human nature and how it influences human perceptions of nature or the environment. Historians and other writers have tended to assume that all humans share specific basic responses to the natural environment. Over time, interpretations of human nature have ranged from rigid biological determinism to subtle and fluid evolutionary ecology. The authors open interpretive doors into how biology, sociobiology, gender, race, culture, society, and other variables shape human discourse on nature and the environment. These essays were first delivered at the New Mexico Environmental Symposium held at the University of New Mexico in April 1996. In addition to the volume editors, contributors are Dan Flores, Virginia Scharff, Vera Norwood, Max Oelschlaeger, William deBuys, and Paul Hirt. Carolyn Merchant and Timothy Moy have penned respectively the foreword and afterword.
