Book Description :

This is a 19th century history of Texas, focusing on its Spanish and Mexican past, as well as the war for independence. From the preface: "The field for historical research in Texas, covering two centuries of time, is wide and, for the most part, deeply interesting. To the present and future generations, however, its chief historic value is confined to that period of time beginning about the close of the 18th and the commencement of the 19th century. Anterior to that time, outside of feeble settlements at San Antonio, Goliad and Nacogdoches and a few straggling missions, the country remained a primeval wilderness. Nor did any real progress toward reclamation occur until an effort was made to secure an Anglo-Saxon (chiefly North American) population, the first fruits of which became manifest in a few families and single men from January to December, 1822. From the latter year we trace all of Texas identified with those principles of liberty, and representative constitutional government held, at least by all English speaking people, to be essential to the continued progress and happiness of mankind. This work is undertaken with a sincere desire to give truth absolute control; to eschew every prejudice; to do justice to all who served their country with fidelity; and to guard against the great injustice of withholding merit due to some and awarding merit not due to others. Most of the numerous books on Texas, including several published in, or prior to 1836, were too early to reach much of its most important history, and before many facts touching the then past were known, or when they were but partially known. The author, at intervals, for nearly half a century, has sought to find and preserve historical data omitted in other works, or incorrectly stated by them. Ours is not like the history of any other State of the Union, settled and fostered by a progressive people and government, and aided by great interior resources and means of transportation of which practically Texas had nothing. Wild barbarians infested Texas, undisturbed until its settlement by Americans, and its frontiers continued subject to all the horrors, more or less extensive, of savage warfare from the beginning in 1822, to its practical cessation in 1876, a period of fifty four years, beside the period from 1835 to 1845, inclusive, of a state of war with Mexico. Her history, taken as a whole, is unique and unlike that of any other member of the Union. To be understood it must be correctly given and carefully read. The author is enabled to correct many errors-some of minor and a few of material importance-heretofore published, and to embrace numerous important facts never before given in any work; and yet, much of interest, in the very nature of things, resulting from the want of official records, the absence in large part of current newspaper files, and the failing memory of many old and patriotic men, must remain untold. Eschewing fiction and exaggeration and guided by the spirit of truth and justice this work is given to the people of Texas by her loyal son."

Book Description :

This third edition of our ground-breaking publication, the first survey of Tejanos, has been completely updated to present a concise political, cultural, and social history of Mexican Americans in Texas from the Spanish colonial era to the present day, a time when people of Mexican descent are poised to become the demographic majority in the Lone Star. Writing specifically for the college-level student and careful to include a consensus of the latest literature in this strong and continually growing field, Professor De León portrays Tejanos as active subjects, not merely objects, in the ongoing Texas story. Complemented by a stunning photographic essay and a helpful glossary, and featuring new biographical vignettes that now introduce and set the context for each chapter, this third edition of our well-loved text is certain to be even more engaging and relevant to readers of all levels. And while the book targets a wide reading audience, it is ideally fit for classroom use. Professors teaching courses in Texas, western, and borderlands history will find it an ideal complement to their class lectures and other outside reading assignments. Of particular interest to students will be discussions describing the survival techniques Tejanos developed to withstand poverty and disadvantage, the process of assimilation over many generations, the changes engendered by the Chicano Movement of the 1960s, the role of political figures such as José Antonio Navarro, J. T. Canales, Alonso Perales, Héctor P. García, or Irma Rangel, or the impact of court cases like which Hernández v. Texas or Plyler v. Doe that changed the direction of Mexican American history.

Book Description :

The history of banking in Texas from the Republic era through the Great Depression is a tale of uncertainty, distrust and confusion, but it is not without a cast of heroic figures. This is the story of the pioneering institutions and individuals that laid the foundation for the current system of banking in Texas, despit enormous legislative and economic obstacles. The Texas Revolution, repeated constitutional prohibitions on banks, civil war and unstable economic conditions hampered the development of an established system of dependable institutions. From the embattled history of the first bank chartered in Mexican Texas (The Commercial & Agricultural Bank) to far more obscure firms, the essential facts are here. The product of years of research drawing on primary documents, this work has been cited extensively in subsequent works relating to Texas and southern banking. Originally published in 1930 by the Fort Worth National Bank upon the death of the bank's founding father, this title has been out-of-print since. This new edition has been wholly revised and re-designed for improved readability.

Book Description :

More than 13,000 historical markers line the roadsides of Texas, giving drivers a way to sample the stories of the past. But these markers tell only part of the story. In History Ahead, Dan K. Utley and Cynthia J. Beeman introduce readers to the rich, colorful, and sometimes action-packed and humorous history behind the famous (Charles Lindbergh, Will Rogers, The Big Bopper, and jazz great Charlie Christian) and the not-so-famous (Elmer "Lumpy" Kleb, Don Pedro Jaramillo, and Carl Morene, the "music man of Schulenburg") who have left their marks on the history of Texas. They visit cotton gins, abandoned airfields, forgotten cemeteries, and former World War II alien detention camps to dig up the little-known and unsuspected narratives behind the text emblazoned on these markers. Written in an anecdotal style that presents the cultural uniqueness and rich diversity of Texas history, History Ahead includes nineteen main stories, dozens of complementary sidebars, and many never-before-published historical and contemporary photographs. History Ahead offers a rich array of local stories that interweave with the broader regional and national context, touching on themes of culture, art, music, technology, the environment, oil, aviation, and folklore, among other topics. Utley and Beeman have located these forgotten gems, polished them up to a high shine, and offered them along with convenient maps and directions to the marker sites.

Book Description :

THE INFLUENCE OF CHRISTIANITY ON EARLY TEXAS HISTORY Texans love their history and celebrate it regularly and enthusiastically. They study it and talk about it and remember it and are proud of it. But we haven't thought all that much about how God might have been involved in all that history. And the truth is God was there the whole time implementing a master plan for development of the New World. The fact is God was intimately involved in the answers to all of the usual history questions: Where did the Indians come from and how did they get here? Or were they always here? But if not, when did they start arriving? Can you connect the Indians to the Bible? How did the Spanish wind up getting the original European foothold in the New World? When did the Spanish explorers come to Texas and why did they come? Which one of the explorers had the greatest impact on Texas history but NEVER set foot in the Texas territory? Why did the Franciscans come to Texas and for what purpose? How did Mexico take over from Spain and how did that figure into the settling of Texas? How did the Texas Declaration of Independence deal with the subject of religion and what was the main issue? When Texas became the 28th State in the Union in 1845, it created social and political upheaval across the U.S. What was the issue that caused that upheaval and how did the Christian Church deal with it? Why is there such an independent, can-do attitude and how did it develop? How did Texas become so prosperous and where was God in that process? These are just a few of the questions this book answers for the curious reader/Christian/historian. It doesn't get into a lot of historical detail but focuses instead on highlighting the connections of our history all along the way to the influence of God. It's also not overly religious; all you need to do is try looking at our history with a Christian world view and the evidence of God becomes obvious. This book is a must for Texas home school kids in 7th to 8th grade curricula or high school for a Christian view of Texas history you won't be able to find at any other place. Question and answer tests and discussion topics are listed at the end of the book for each chapter focusing on the key points covered in each of the ten distinctive segments of Texas history. The history of Texas is not accidental and it's not random, nor is it a series of coincidences. It is indeed a part of a master plan carried out by Creator God to accomplish His purposes in this special place in bringing about the development of the New World. When you decide to look at it His way, you see the evidence of His work all over our state. His special finger prints are everywhere and you are sure to enjoy this special perspective of Texas history. Enjoy finding out how God got us all to where we are today! ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS: This book contains ten chapters with nine of them pertaining to the influence of Christianity on the most important times of development during the course of Texas history from the very beginning until the year 1900. It is neither a history book nor a theological discourse but a "connector" book that shows how Texas history was a major part of God's plan for the New World. You will enjoy all the historical photographs portraying the following key stages of development: The coming of the Indians The discovery by the Europeans The search of the Conquistadores The influence of the Franciscans The explosion of the Protestant Settlers The time of the Republic The annexation into the U.S. and the Civil War The emergence of the cattle industry that changes everything The discovery of oil brings prosperity This book also contains a section with test questions and answers related to each of the chapters so that it can be used as teaching material. It is suitable for ages starting at approximately 13 and above. Have fun with this book and learn some new info about Texas history.

Book Description :

Certain to become a standard reference in its field, Indians of the Rio Grande Delta is the first single-volume source on these little-known peoples. Working from innumerable primary documents in various Texan and Mexican archives, Martin Salinas has compiled data on more than six dozen named groups that inhabited the area in the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries. Depending on available information, he reconstructs something of their history, geographical range and migrations, demography, language, and culture. He also offers general information on various unnamed groups of Indians, on the lifeways of the indigenous peoples, and on the relations between the Indian groups and the colonial Spanish missions in the region.
