Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) using metal-on-metal bearings is an established but specialised technique in joint surgery. Based on the experience of leading experts in the field, The hip resurfacing handbook provides a comprehensive reference for all aspects of this important procedure. The first part of the book reviews and compares all the major hip resurfacing prostheses, their key design features, relevant surgical techniques and clinical results. Part two discusses clinical follow-up of the hip resurfacing patient, including pre- and post-operative examination, acoustic phenomena and rehabilitation. It also covers the use of techniques such as radiography and metal ion measurement, as well as bone scans, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET and DEXA, to evaluate hip resurfacings. Part three reviews best practice in surgical technique, including the modified posterior and anterior approaches, as well as instrumentation, anaesthesia and revision surgery. Based on extensive retrieval studies, Part four includes examples of the main failure modes in HRA. The final part of the book includes patients’ own experiences, a comparison of HRA with total hip arthroplasty (THA), regulatory issues and relevant web sites. Comprehensive in its scope and authoritative in its coverage, The hip resurfacing handbook is a standard work for orthopaedic surgeons and all those involved in HRA. Book Description :

Advanced surfaces enriches the high-throughput engineering of physical and chemical phenomenon in relatin to electrical, magnetic, electronics, thermal and optical controls, as well as large surface areas, protective coatings against water loss and excessive gas exchange. A more sophisticated example could be a highly selective surface permeability allowing passive diffusion and selective transport of molecules in the water or gases. The smart surface technology provides an interlayer model which prevents the entry of substances without affecting the properties of neighboring layers. A number of methods have been developed for coatings, which are essential building blocks for the top-down and/or bottom-up design of numerous functional materials. Advanced Surface Engineering Materials offers a detailed up-to-date review chapters on the functional coatings and adhesives, engineering of nanosurfaces, high-tech surface, characterization and new applications. The 13 chapters in this book are divided into 3 parts (Functional coatings and adhesives; Engineering of nanosurfaces; High-tech surface, characterization and new applications) and are all written by worldwide subject matter specialists. The book is written for readers from diverse backgrounds across chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, medical science, environmental, bio- and nano- technologies and biomedical engineering. It offers a comprehensive view of cutting-edge research on surface engineering materials and their technological importance.

Book Description :

This book addresses the background and significance of the factors potentially influencing the clinical and biological outcomes of metal-on-metal hip implants. Metal-on-metal bearings were introduced and evaluated as an alternative to other bearing couples, particularly metal-on-polyethylene, due to their enhanced wear resistance as determined in laboratory testing. Initially, reports of short-term clinical outcomes were favorable and an increasing number of metal-on-metal prostheses were implanted. Subsequently, isolated case findings describing adverse tissue responses around the articulation became the harbinger of an increasing number of reports describing pseudotumors and other significant lymphocytic-based responses associated with metal-on-metal prostheses. Questions have been raised as to whether this is an implant, design, or patient-specific response. The reasons why some patients have a negative biological response and pathology while others do not remain to be determined, but tens of thousands of patients in the US, the UK, and around the world are considered to be at risk. Leading researchers and clinicians describe the issues related to the nature of the biological and pathological responses and the protocols that should be followed to determine if an adverse response is occurring. This book is essential reading for researchers, engineers, and orthopaedic surgeons who are involved in the design, evaluation, and implantation of metal-on-metal prostheses.
