Book Description :

Heparins remain amongst the most commonly used drugs in clinical practice. Almost 100 years have passed since the initial discovery of this complex substance and, during this time, understanding of the nature and uses of heparin and related molecules has grown dramatically. The aim of this volume is to summarise the developments that have led to the current status of both heparins as drugs and the field of heparin research, with a focus on the particularly rapid progress that has been made over the past three decades. Individual sections are dedicated to the nature of heparin as a biological molecule, the current approaches and techniques that are used to ensure the safety and reliability of heparin as a medicine, the clinical pharmacology of heparin as an anticoagulant drug, effects and potential applications of heparin aside of those involving haemostasis and, finally, the nature and potential uses of heparin-like materials from both natural and synthetic sources.

Heparin has been widely used in the medical community as an anti-coagulant. More recently, heparin has been shown to possess other biologically and medically relevant characteristics such as modulation of cell proliferation, inflammation, and cytokine production. In this book, the authors present current research in the study of the properties, uses and side effects of heparin, including the pharmacology of oral heparin; the possible antimetastatic, anti-inflammatory, and suppression of membrane vesiculation effect of heparin; heparin monitoring; searching for heparin binding patterns; and, heparin-related nanomaterials.

Book Description :

This volume is a record of a meeting entitled "Heparin and Related Polysaccharides" that was held at the Biomedical Center, Uppsala, Sweden between 1-6 September 1991. The meeting was hosted by U. Lindahl, L. Kjellen and I. Bjork, who were helped in their preparations by a scientific advisory panel that included U. Abildgaard, B. Casu, E. Holmer and D. Lane. Altogether, 230 participants from 18 countries attended the meeting, and most were present to be included in a photograph, which is to be found at the end of this volume. The selection of presentations for inclusion in the Symposia of the meeting was made on the basis of the known high quality of the work of the individuals or groups involved. This, we believe, is reflected in the contents of the enclosed articles, which collectively give a comprehensive overview of the present state of knowledge of heparin and related compounds. Some of the areas covered are evolving or controversial and the views expressed in each article should be regarded as those of the author(s). The authors have taken various amounts of care to define all their abbreviations and some familiarity with the different forms of nomenclature used in the fields of polysaccharide chemistry and of the coagulation proteinases and their inhibitors will assist the reader.

Trauma Induced Coagulopathy

Trauma Induced Coagulopathy Book

Book Description :

The first edition of this publication was aimed at defining the current concepts of trauma induced coagulopathy by critically analyzing the most up-to-date studies from a clinical and basic science perspective. It served as a reference source for any clinician interested in reviewing the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of the coagulopathic trauma patient, and the data that supports it. By meticulously describing the methodology of most traditional as well as state of the art coagulation assays the reader is provided with a full understanding of the tests that are used to study trauma induced coagulopathy. With the growing interest in understanding and managing coagulation in trauma, this second edition has been expanded to 46 chapters from its original 35 to incorporate the massive global efforts in understanding, diagnosing, and treating trauma induced coagulopathy. The evolving use of blood products as well as recently introduced hemostatic medications is reviewed in detail. The text provides therapeutic strategies to treat specific coagulation abnormalities following severe injury, which goes beyond the first edition that largely was based on describing the mechanisms causing coagulation abnormalities. Trauma Induced Coagulopathy 2nd Edition is a valuable reference to clinicians that are faced with specific clinical challenges when managing coagulopathy.

Book Description :

Heparin: Structure, Cellular Functions, and Clinical Applications compiles lectures presented at the International Symposium on Heparin held at Saskatoon on July 6-8, 1977. Heparin has been the leader in antithrombotic therapy ever since its introduction several years ago. This substance initiated a field of therapeutics and made possible dramatic advances in cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, acute and chronic hemodialysis, and a variety of other medical and surgical procedures. This book discusses several concepts pertaining to the heparin molecule, its pharmacology, physiology, and clinical application. Other topics covered include the use of heparin in preventing thrombosis; use of pharmacodynamic studies for establishing dosage; identification of differences in heparins among various mammalian species; and methods for the determination of heparin. The demonstration of the platelet aggregating effect of commercial heparin preparations; heparin's reaction with toluidine blue; identification of iduronic acid as a major component of heparin; and identification of circulating heparin in canine anaphylaxis are discussed as well. This compilation is a good reference for students and individuals conducting research on heparin and its physiological role.
