Book Description :

C.S. Lewis' novel, The Great Divorce, about a man who takes a bus trip from Hell to Heaven, is full of fascinating characters and conversations. C.S. Lewis Goes to Heaven is the first book dedicated to exploring this story, revealing many important secrets that have gone undetected since its publication in 1946. Discover how leaving a train station in the wrong direction provided Lewis a model for Hell. Learn the real names of an Impressionist painter and a famous detective writer that Lewis placed (anonymously) in Hell. With considerable detective work of his own, David Clark carefully expands ideas found in The Great Divorce using supporting references from Lewis' personal correspondence and other books, particularly Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, Surprised by Joy and Letters to Malcolm.* * * Clark looks at the story through three different lenses. First, he introduces the characters and their interactions chapter by chapter, including a brief narrative so readers new to Lewis will feel at home. Second, he reveals how even the book's landscapes convey the theology of Lewis. Then the author comes "alongside" Lewis, explaining his theological ideas and insights, showing their far-reaching implications, and providing scriptural references. By these three approaches, the astonishing grasp of Lewis' theology is revealed in accessible language. The book concludes with three appendices, including 40 pages of historical character sketches, literary references, and concepts.* * * Considering that Lewis himself thought it surpassed his classic book, The Screwtape Letters, it's regrettable that The Great Divorce has been neglected for so long. Now for the first time, there is a comprehensive guide to help readers appreciate this profound and entertaining novel, and be awestruck by the grace of God it reveals. * * * "If you want a great guide to The Great Divorce, you can't do better than David Clark, who introduces readers to a host of fascinating historical and literary characters - illuminating this popular novel with theological insight and devotional delight. Clark's tour of C. S. Lewis' version of Heaven and Hell provides a truly refreshing holiday." * * * Terry Lindvall, author of Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C.S. Lewis

Book Description :

“Ilyon Woo presents the earliest child custody laws of this country with vivid relevance . . . both legal and feminist details are fascinating” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). The Great Divorce is the dramatic, richly textured story of one of nineteenth-century America’s most infamous divorce cases, in which a young mother single-handedly challenged her country’s notions of women’s rights, family, and marriage itself. In 1814, Eunice Chapman came home to discover that her three children had been carried off by her estranged husband. He had taken them, she learned, to live among a celibate, religious people known as the Shakers. Defying all expectations, this famously petite and lovely woman mounted an epic campaign against her husband, the Shakers, and the law. In its confrontation of some of the nation’s most fundamental debates—religious freedom, feminine virtue, the sanctity of marriage—her case struck a nerve with an uncertain new republic. And its culmination—in a stunning legislative decision and a terrifying mob attack—sent shockwaves through the Shaker community and the nation beyond. With a novelist’s eye and a historian’s perspective, Woo delivers the first full account of Eunice Chapman’s remarkable struggle. A moving story about the power of a mother’s love, The Great Divorce is also a memorable portrait of a rousing challenge to the values of a young nation. “Modern Americans, bombarded with stories of celebrity divorces, probably assume that the tabloid breakup is a recent phenomenon. This lively, well-written and engrossing tale proves them wrong.” —The New York Times Book Review

Book Description :

The twin Lasserman boys grew up in mid-twentieth century middle America. As children they were as close as one would expect twin boys to be. But as adults their life paths took them to far different destinations, economically, socially and geographically. At a time when they were past middle-aged, a severely divided nation driven by polarizing political demagogues, stressed their moral foundations to the breaking point. What happens beyond the breaking point teaches them a great deal about themselves and each other and has a cataclysmic effect on the nation and the world. This is a must-read for any open-minded, intelligent individuals who want to explore a fictional world where moral norms are cast aside, racial biases are openly exploited, and society is allowed to deteriorate to an unforeseen nadir of base expression and survival mode behavior.

In this book C.S. Lewis, in a dream, finds himself in a bus which travels between Hell and Heaven. This is the starting point for an extraordinary meditation upon good and evil which takes issue with William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. The writer, in a dream, finds himself in a bus which travels between Hell and Heaven. This is the starting point for an extraordinary meditation upon good and evil which takes issue with William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. In Lewis’s own words, ‘If we insist on keeping Hell (or even earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell.’ “I think it is unlikely that if other books as generally entertaining ... appear this year, they will be as generally instructive.” W.H. Auden, Saturday Review

Book Description :

ABOUT THE BOOK C.S. Lewis' The Great Divorce first appeared serially in the Anglican publication The Guardian in 14 installments from November 1944 to April 1945, the same publication that published Lewis' The Screwtape Letters in 1941. Influenced by Lewis' own experiences as a soldier in World War I and with World War II still raging at the time of its creation (it was written in 1943), The Great Divorce emerged at a time when the question of how a benevolent God could allow such unprecedented human suffering was on the minds of thinkers great and small. The title refers to Romantic poet, illustrator, and author William Blake and his work, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1790). Both works attempt to describe, in contemporary terms, the author's conception of a Christian Heaven and Hell. For Blake, the two are married as fluid parts of the same dynamic, unified order. Lewis presents their divorce, if not from an interrelationship then from the idea that there can be an afterlife in which one enjoys the best of both "If we insist on keeping Hell (or even Earth) we shall not see Heaven: if we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell." EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Feeling miserable after his conversation with the Hard-Bitten Man, the narrator is plagued with doubt, wondering if the whole business of the bus trip is merely meant, as the Hard-Bitten man implied, for the angels to mock the damned. Troubled, he journeys on to a thick wood where he spies a Well-Dressed Woman trying to hide herself from an angel. The woman is ashamed of what she's wearing compared to the angels, and despite the angel's insistence it is of no consequence, she can't relinquish her vanity. The angel then blows a loud horn that summons a herd of enormous unicorns, shaking the ground with their stampede. The woman, frightened, screams and leaves, as does the narrator. In this chapter Lewis pokes fun at the rather flimsy vanity people (in this case a woman) cling to when they become ashamed to participate in something-even Heaven-because they don't feel they have something appropriate to wear for the occasion. "How can I go out like this among a lot od people with real solid bodies?," she asks. "It's far worse than going out with nothing on would have been on Earth. Have everyone staring through me." Book Description :

C.S. Lewis's dazzling allegory about heaven and hell - and the chasm fixed between them - is one of his most brilliantly imaginative tales, as he takes issue with the ideas in William Blake's 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell'.In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon and embarks on an incredible voyage through Heaven and Hell. He meets a host of supernatural beings far removed from his expectations, from the disgruntled, ghostly inhabitants of Hell to the angels and souls who dwell on the plains of Heaven. This powerful, exquisitely written fantasy is one of C.S. Lewis's most enduring works of fiction and a profound meditation on good and evil.
