Book Description :

Coal remains an important fossil fuel resource for many nations due to its large remaining resources, relatively low production and processing cost and potential high energy intensity. Certain issues surround its utilisation, however, including emissions of pollutants and growing concern about climate change. The coal handbook: Towards cleaner production Volume 2 explores global coal use in industry. Part one is an introductory section which reviews the social and economic value of coal, emissions from coal utilisation, the handling, impact and utilisation of coal waste, and an exploration of emerging and future issues around industrial coal utilization. Chapters in part two highlight coal resources, production and use in established markets as well as the emerging markets of Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, and China. Part three focuses specifically on coal utilisation in industry. Chapters consider thermal coal utilisation, coal use in iron and steel metallurgy, advances in pulverised fuel technology, and the evaluation of coal for thermal and metallurgical applications. Further chapters explore coal utilisation in the cement and concrete industries, coal gasification and conversion, and value-in-use assessment for thermal and metallurgical coal. A final chapter summarises the anticipated future pathway towards sustainable, long-term coal use, suggesting transitions that will be needed to ensure cleaner utilisation for many decades to come. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, The coal handbook Volumes 1 and 2 is a comprehensive and invaluable resource for professionals in the coal mining, preparation, and utilisation industry, those in the power sector, including plant operators and engineers, and researchers and academics interested in this field. Reviews the social and economic value of coal, emissions from coal utilisation, and the handling, impact and utilisation of coal waste Explores emerging and future issues around industrial coal utilization Highlights coal resources, production and use in established markets, as well as emerging markets such as Brazil, the Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, and China

Book Description :

All the guidance needed to test coal and analyze the results With the skyrocketing costs of most fuel sources, government, industry, and consumers are taking a greater interest in coal, an abundant and inexpensive alternative, which has been made more environmentally friendly through new technology. Published in response to this renewed interest, Handbook of Coal Analysis provides readers with everything they need to know about testing and analyzing coal. Moreover, it explains the meaning of test results and how these results can predict coal behavior and its corresponding environmental impact during use. The thorough coverage of coal analysis includes: * Detailed presentation of necessary standard tests and procedures * Explanation of coal behavior relative to its usage alongside the corresponding environmental issues * Coverage of nomenclature, terminology, sampling, and accuracy and precision of analysis * Step-by-step test method protocols for proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, mineral matter, physical and electrical properties, thermal properties, mechanical properties, spectroscopic properties, and solvent properties * Emphasis on relevant American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards and test methods, including corresponding International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and British Standards Institution (BSI) test method numbers To assist readers in understanding the material, a glossary of terms is provided. Each term is defined in straightforward language that enables readers to better grasp complex concepts and theory. References at the end of each chapter lead readers to more in-depth discussions of specialized topics. This is an essential reference for analytical chemists, process chemists, and engineers in the coal industry as well as other professionals and researchers who are looking to coal as a means to decrease dependence on foreign oil sources and devise more efficient, cleaner methods of energy production.

'-'hen the seam does not outcrop on the surface, and it can be opened by a shaft that will, in the case of an inclined seam, reach the coal at its lowest level and about in the center of the strike of the seam, or when the seam is fiat a shaft will cut it nearly in the center of the coal bed, such an opening is the only kind practicable. Drifts.--The height of a drift depends largely on the thickness and inclination of the seam. When possible, the height should be from 6 ft. to 7 ft. in the clear. To obtain such a height in a flat thin seam or a thin seam 0'1 light pitch requires the brushing down of top or blowing up of bottom. This adds considerable to the cost of driving the drift, and the extent to which it should be done must be determined by conditions at the mine. In a thick seam or one having a heavy pitch a height of about 7 ft. in the clear is best. The width of a drift depends on the width of the mine cars used, the thickness and inclination of the coal seam, the character of the top and bottom, and whether the drift is to be single or double tracked. It must have suilicient width to provide clearance for the mine car, with enough room on one side to provide for a drainage ditch and enough additional space for men to pass mine cars without danger of being crushed against the rib. If the seam is a comparatively thin one lying at considerable inclination it will be necessary to do some rock work to provide the required width. If the seam is a thick one, or is of such light pitch that the desired width can be secured in coal, the character of the top and bottom.will...
