Book Description :

Powerful stories about the will to survive. In Call of the Wild, Buck, a domesticated dog, is stolen from his home in California and sold into sled dog slavery during the 1890s Klondike gold rush in Alaska. Forced to shed the comforts of civilization, he reverts to more primitive instincts and emerges as the leader of the pack. White Fang, published before Call of the Wild, is the companion novel about a wild wolf dog who is adopted by a human and eventually domesticated. Also included are The Sea-Wolf and many short stories centered on Alaska and the Far North. Jack London’s classic tales—often told from the animal’s viewpoint—have been popular for decades and will add a bit of gold to your Word Cloud collection.

Book Description :

Presented together in one volume, these are two of the greatest and most popular animal stories ever written. Even to designate them as "animal stories" seems to undervalue them, because these tremendous works are so much more than mere children's tales, although they are admittedly still greatly loved by the young. Penned by Jack London at the beginning of the twentieth century, the first, The Call of the Wild, tells the story of Buck, a domestic dog who is kidnapped from his home in California and forced to pull sleds in the Arctic wastes. In the second, White Fang, a cross-breed that is three-quarters wolf and one quarter dog, endures considerable suffering in the Arctic before being tamed by a white American and taken to live in California. The two narratives are remarkable for the vividness of their descriptions and the success with which London imagines life from a nonhuman perspective.

Book Description :

From trauma educator and somatic guide Kimberly Ann Johnson comes a cutting-edge guide for tapping into the wisdom and resilience of the body to rewire the nervous system, heal from trauma, and live fully. In an increasingly polarized world where trauma is often publicly renegotiated, our nervous systems are on high alert. From skyrocketing rates of depression and anxiety to physical illnesses such as autoimmune diseases and digestive disorders, many women today find themselves living out of alignment with their bodies. Kimberly Johnson is a somatic practitioner, birth doula, and postpartum educator who specializes in helping women recover from all forms of trauma. In her work, she’s seen the same themes play out time and again. In a culture that prioritizes executive function and “mind over matter,” many women are suffering from deeply unresolved pain that causes mental and physical stagnation and illness. In Call of the Wild, Johnson offers an eye-opening look at this epidemic as well as an informative view of the human nervous system and how it responds to difficult events. From the “small t” traumas of getting ghosted, experiencing a fall-out with a close friend, or swerving to avoid a car accident to the “capital T” traumas of sexual assault, an upending natural disaster, or a life-threatening illness—Johnson explains how the nervous system both protects us from immediate harm and creates reverberations that ripple through a lifetime. In this practical, empowering guide, Johnson shows readers how to metabolize these nervous system responses, allowing everyone to come home to their deepest, most intuitive and whole selves. Following her supportive advice, readers will learn how to move from wholeness, tapping into the innate wisdom of their senses, soothing frayed nerves and reconnecting with their “animal selves.” While we cannot cure the painful cultural rifts inflicting our society, there is a path forward—through our bodies.

Out of the white wilderness, out of the Far North, Jack London, one of America’s most popular authors, drew the inspiration for his robust tales of perilous adventure and animal cunning. Swiftly paced and vividly written, the novel and five short stories included here capture the main theme of London’s work: the law of the club and the fang—man’s instinctive reversion to primitive behavior when pitted against the brute force of nature. Includes The Call of the Wild, Diable: A Dog, An Odyssey of the North, To the Man on the Trail, To Build a Fire, and Love of Life

Book Description :

The Call of the Wild brought him international acclaim when it was published in 1903. His story of the dog Buck, who learns to survive in the bleak Yukon wilderness, is viewed by many as his symbolic autobiography. 'No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild,' said H. L. Mencken. 'Here, indeed, are all the elements of sound fiction.' White Fang (1906), which London conceived as a 'complete antithesis and companion piece to The Call of the Wild,' is the tale of an abused wolf-dog tamed by exposure to civilization. Also included in this volume is 'To Build a Fire,' a marvelously desolate short story set in the Klondike, but containing all the elements of a classic Greek tragedy.

Book Description :

The Call of the Wild – A dog named Buck gets stolen from his home in Santa Clara Valley, California, and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs. White Fang – A wolf-dog raised in an Indian camp runs away only to face the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. White Fang grows to become a savage, callous, morose, solitary, and deadly fighter. The story takes place in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. His amazing life experience also includes being an oyster pirate, railroad hobo, gold prospector, sailor, war correspondent and much more. He wrote adventure novels & sea tales, stories of the Gold Rush, tales of the South Pacific and the San Francisco Bay area - most of which were based on or inspired by his own life experiences.

Book Description :

ABOUT THE BOOK If you’ve ever been lucky enough to experience the company of a loyal, proud, and loving dog, you will see him or her in the opening pages of The Call of the Wild as Buck, the four-year-old St. Bernard and Scotch shepherd mix who is kidnapped from his comfortable family home in California and must learn to survive in the treacherous Yukon wilderness. And for those who have ever wondered how your friend (in my case, an 11 year-old German Shepherd named Rocky) might have acted in a different era or observed that instinctive glimmer in his eye, you will undoubtedly love reading this book. For my younger self, the novella served as a gripping adventure story, as entertaining as it was well-written. A straightforward read that took me from the sunny suburbs of California to the bitter cold snows of northern Canada, complete with scenes of violence, jealousy, hatred, tragedy, amazing physical feats, and true love along the way. But the real value in Jack London’s classic tale was in revisiting it as an adult, when I could better understand the subtleties of its canine interactions and identify its complex human archetypes. As an adult reader, I’m now able to appreciate the fascinating illustrations of hubris, naivety, resilience, growth, identity, greed, passion, selflessness, vengeance and liberation included in the adventure—all of which might go unnoticed by a young reader. MEET THE AUTHOR Tiffanie Wen is a professional writer from the San Francisco Bay Area who's written for Newsweek, Flux Hawaii, Ode Magazine and more. When she's not working, she enjoys exploring new places around the world and spending time with her dogs, Rocky and Benny. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Buck immediately begins to compromise his sense of civilization for his immediate need to survive. In fact, survival of the fittest, known in the novel as the “law of club and fang” is one of the most pervasive themes in the story. Despite his domestic upbringing, when faced with extreme conditions and violence among his peers, Buck does what is necessary to survive. He learns to stay warm in the blistering cold, to fight aggressively, and to steal food, something he would have been too dignified to do in his earlier life, but that is now crucial to his survival in the freezing weather. “Civilized, he could have died for a moral consideration, say, for the defence of Judge Miller’s riding whip; but the completeness of his decivilization as now evidenced by his ability to flee from a moral consideration and so save his hide. He did not steal for the joy of it, but for the clamor of his stomach. He did not rob openly, but stole secretly and cunningly, for respect for the law of club and fang.” Eventually, Buck becomes so well-versed in the “law of club and fang” that he kills Spitz in a dramatic fight and takes over his position as lead-dog.
