Book Description :

This first cultural biography of rap superstar and “master of storytelling” (The New Yorker) Kendrick Lamar explores his meteoric rise to fame and his profound impact on a racially fraught America—perfect for fans of Zack O’Malley Greenburg’s Empire State of Mind. Kendrick Lamar is at the top of his game. The thirteen-time Grammy Award–winning rapper is just in his early thirties, but he’s already won the Pulitzer Prize for Music, produced and curated the soundtrack of the megahit film Black Panther, and has been named one of Time’s 100 Influential People. But what’s even more striking about the Compton-born lyricist and performer is how he’s established himself as a formidable adversary of oppression and force for change. Through his confessional poetics, his politically charged anthems, and his radical performances, Lamar has become a beacon of light for countless people. Written by veteran journalist and music critic Marcus J. Moore, this is the first biography of Kendrick Lamar. It’s the definitive account of his coming-of-age as an artist, his resurrection of two languishing genres (bebop and jazz), his profound impact on a racially fraught America, and his emergence as the bona fide King of Rap. The Butterfly Effect is the extraordinary, triumphant story of a modern lyrical prophet and an American icon who has given hope to those buckling under the weight of systemic oppression, reminding everyone that through it all—“we gon’ be alright.”

Book Description :

Sarah Haywood's The Cactus meets Graeme Simsion's The Rosie Project in this heartwarming tale of an introvert, her lack of social conduct and empirical data-driven approach to people and relationships. The monarch. The glasswing. The red admiral. These are the names of some of Greta Oto's closest friends. As an entomologist who specializes in butterflies, Greta far prefers the company of bugs to humans, with the exception of her twin brother, Danny, though they've recently had a falling out. So she lands a research gig in the rainforest and leaves it all behind. But when Greta learns that Danny has suffered an aneurysm and is now hospitalized, she abandons her research and hurries home to the middle of nowhere America to be there for her brother. But there's only so much she can do, and unfortunately just like insects, humans don't stay cooped up in their hives either--they buzz about and... socialize. Coming home means confronting all that she left behind, including her lousy soon-to-be sister-in-law, her estranged mother, and her ex-boyfriend Brandon who has conveniently found a new non-lab-exclusive partner with shiny hair, perfect teeth, and can actually remember the names of the people she meets right away. Being that Brandon runs the only butterfly conservatory in town, and her dissertation is now in jeopardy, taking that job, being back home, it's all creating chaos of Greta's perfectly catalogued and compartmentalized world. The Butterfly Effect is a warm, uplifting story about the behavior of bugs (and people), how they can be altered by high-pressure climates, confused by breakdowns in communication, and most importantly, how they can rehabilitate themselves and each other.

Book Description :

'Kendrick Lamar understands and employs blues, jazz, and soul in his music, which makes it startling. His work is more than merely brilliant; it is magic' Toni Morrison 'Lamar is a man living on a real and metaphorical peak, with one eye trained on the heavens, the other searching for stories in the valley below' Guardian __________ Kendrick Lamar has been described as the poet Laurette of hip-hop, perceptive, philosophical, unapologetic, fearless, and an innovative storyteller whose body of work has been compared to James Joyce and James Baldwin. He is a visionary who will go down as history as one of the most important artists of all time. But what's so striking about Kendrick Lamar, aside from his impressive accolades, is how he's effectively established himself as a formidable opponent of oppression, a force for change. Through his confessional poetics, his politically charged anthems, and his radical performances, Lamar has become a beacon of light for many people in America. Now, for the first time, we will be taken on a journey of Lamar's life. Told through his three albums, The Butterfly Effect gives unparalleled insight into his background, influences and the importance of his music. The book traces not only Lamar's powerful impact on music but also on our current society, especially under the weight of police brutality, divisive politics, and social injustice. With exclusive interviews with his family, friends, and record producers, this book is the must-read for any fan. __________ 'By the end of listening to his first full album, I felt like I knew everything about him. He brings you into his world with his lyrics in a way that really paints a clear picture' Eminem 'I love everything about his music. I can literally listen to his music and become a kid growing up with all the struggles in the inner city, but at the same time [learn] all the lessons it taught that we use as men today.' Lebron James 'For a gentle dude, he throws a righteous punch; I wouldn't get in the way of it. No single artist will ever be the antidote to a generation's malaise, but just identifying some of the problems really helps' Bono

Book Description :

A fascinating, entertaining dive into the long-standing relationship between humans and insects, revealing the surprising ways we depend on these tiny, six-legged creatures. Insects might make us shudder in disgust, but they are also responsible for many of the things we take for granted in our daily lives. When we bite into a shiny apple, listen to the resonant notes of a violin, get dressed, receive a dental implant, or get a manicure, we are the beneficiaries of a vast army of insects. Try as we might to replicate their raw material (silk, shellac, and cochineal, for instance), our artificial substitutes have proven subpar at best, and at worst toxic, ensuring our interdependence with the insect world for the foreseeable future. Drawing on research in laboratory science, agriculture, fashion, and international cuisine, Edward D. Melillo weaves a vibrant world history that illustrates the inextricable and fascinating bonds between humans and insects. Across time, we have not only coexisted with these creatures but have relied on them for, among other things, the key discoveries of modern medical science and the future of the world's food supply. Without insects, entire sectors of global industry would grind to a halt and essential features of modern life would disappear. Here is a beguiling appreciation of the ways in which these creatures have altered--and continue to shape--the very framework of our existence.

Book Description :

The flap of a butterfly's wing in one part of the world can cause devastating storms on the other side, just as the word "lesbian"—a force full of vitality and world-changing creativity—can destroy families and bring down governments. Evoking the ancient worlds of pre-Vedic and Sapphic lovers, medieval jonglaresas, and nuns "fingering petals and hips," as well as the contemporary world of circuses, global politics, friendship, betrayal, and death, the poems in this collection fold in on themselves, exploding into concentric rings of meaning, rich in symbol and metaphor.

Book Description :

For over 25 years, Rex has taught with one simple theme;you matter to God.Somehow we have missed that. The unconditional mercy and grace that flow from the heart of God draws us to Him. Nothing we will ever do, good or bad, would ever cause the heart of God to love us any more or less than he does right now. When that truth soaks in, you and I will be able to live the life that God has called us to live. The smallest of things we do and say, matter deeply to God and to those around us. Grace, extended to others, has a ripple effect. When we step out of our comfort zone and touch the world around us, something happens.Broken-hearted people start to mend. They begin to connect the dots to God.That is a good thing, a very good thing. It can cause a butterfly effect of grace.

Book Description :

A self-obsessed Calcutta detective who goes by his last name `Kar’, an enigmatic internet cafe hostess in Seoul, and a hotshot geneticist labouring away on a top-secret corporate project. These are just a few pieces in the puzzle that need to be put together to explain a world sucked into the whirlpool of the `butterfly effect’. In the decaying capital city of a near-future Darkland, which covers large swathes of Asia, Captain Old – an off-duty policeman – receives news that might help to unravel the roots of a scourge that has ravaged the continent. As stories coalesce into stories – welding past, present and future together – will a macabre death in a small English town or the disappearance of Indian tourists in Korea, help to blow away the dusts of time? From utopian communities of Asia to the prison camps of Pyongyang and from the gene labs of Europe to the violent streets of Darkland – riven by civil war, infested by genetically engineered fighters – this time-travelling novel crosses continents, weaving mystery, adventure and romance, gradually fixing its gaze on the sway of the unpredictable over our lives.

Book Description :

The Butterfly Effect: Flutters of Wisdom and Kindness accentuates the compelling need for random acts of kindness. Each reader of this book can remember someone from his or her past who has made an indelible influence on his or her life. A random act of kindness can resonate with goodness for each person who participates in favor. Unfortunately, other types of acts can have an opposite effect. This work contains hundreds of “flutters” of wisdom and kindness from an eclectic composition of sources from Aristotle to Emile Zola, from Plato to Rudyard Kipling, from Booker T. Washington to Leo Tolstoy, Karl Marx to Janis Joplin. This work attempts to synthesize different thought and observations from people, past and present, from different cultures of east and west that will indicate that we all share an impetus to a common goal . . . if we help each other. Though this may be deemed a work of scholarship, it is presented in non-scholarship terms. Though the subject matters (philosophy, sex, religion, and politics) are matters of gravitas, the answers can be quite simple, if we permit them to be. This is not a “how to” book. Each person has the sovereign right to determine his or her destiny. Nevertheless, interesting and controversial points are covered so that each person may make a more informed choice about how to determine well-being. If the reader pledges to help another, thousands of others will be pledging to help the reader. A Zen Buddhist koan asks, “How does the drop of water know it is part of a wave?” A drop always has a ripple. A flutter of kindness or wisdom can shake the world.

Book Description :

X91;Making change happen’ is an important challenge strategists face today. Not only do many of our organizations need change, whole industries and systems need to transform in order to survive and thrive in a connected society. In this study the complexity-based design approach of imagineering is presented and evaluated for its effectiveness in realizing organizational innovation in a sustainable way.0The method approaches organizational change as an emerging process of self-organization. By redesigning the business concept in the narrative mode a kind of bottom-up revitalizing process is effectuated which ignites the collective creativity of involved stakeholders in a strategically envisioned direction. Instead of focusing on changing behavior as conventional change-methods do, the method focuses on achieving a mind-shift in order to effectuate ‘transformation by inspiration’. The effectiveness of the method is evaluated predominantly through two cases which span a period of approximately ten years: the case of the city of Antwerp, and the case of the oldest Belgian retail-chain, Veritas. Based on insights gained from this study, the author reflects on the implications of the imagineering design method on four fields of study: transformative organizing, strategic thinking, design thinking in management and management education.

The Butterfly Effect offers practical, intuitive and powerful strategies, and uses humor to disarm and open up new ways of looking at self-esteem, resilience, body image, friendship, consumerism, navigating the online world, overcoming girls' fear of failure and finding positive role models. Dannielle Miller is an experienced teacher and educator committed to empowering young people to reach their full potential. Her work has been featured in education journals and has made her a popular speaker at various national conferences and forums. Dannielle founded Enlighten Education in 2003. Enlighten is now a national network of passionate, talented women who believe that by entering our young girls' world and engaging them, they have the capacity to be a voice of difference and facilitate meaningful conversations around gender and identity. Dannielle delights in working with thousands of teenage girls across Australia, and with the media as a guest expert on teen issues. The connection Danni forges with teenage girls and her ability to get them to open up to her and think about themselves and the world around them gives her unique and invaluable insight into what makes teenage girls tick, and how we can help them navigate everything life throws in their way. Dannielle writes primarily for the mothers of teenage girls, encouraging them to realise that they are more like their daughters than they think and they can help their daughters by helping themselves, too.

There's physical pain, like bumping your knee against the bedpost in the middle of the night, worse, your pinky...a definite ouch! We know that there may be a bump, or a bruise, but it will heal. We've experienced this, right ladies?! But, what about emotional pain? Mental pain? Psychological pain? A pain that stems from a sexual assault? A rape? The pain that you knew this person.....that you trusted him.....how do we heal from something like this? Will we ever heal? Are we tainted, now....forever? God is The Almighty Healer and Restorer. He is actually in the business of doing just that, healing and restoring us. Restoring what was taken from us. Healing our hearts, wounds, minds and souls. Teaching us to trust again...to trust in Him. I didn't know this. I didn't think I could be healed from a traumatic experience. An experience I tried to bury so deep down inside because I was too ashamed...because I secretly blamed myself...because... what would people think of me. How do they see me? Do they know? Are they whispering about me?This book is about healing, being restored and becoming the new creation in Jesus. It's about me allowing God to turn the huge, gaping wound in the middle of my chest into a beautiful scar...for Him. It's about telling my story, which brings healing and releases the yoke of bondage from around my neck. It's about no longer being silent. It's about being free. It's about fully trusting God.Being vulnerable can be a scary thing, but it brings so much healing and freedom. God does wonders in those who are willing to be vulnerable to and for Him.
