Book Description :

The inspirational teachings in this collection show that the real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. The teachings are drawn from the talks and writings of Morihei Ueshiba, founder of the popular Japanese martial art of Aikido, a mind-body discipline he called the "Art of Peace," which offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict. Ueshiba believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal relationships, as we interact with society, and at work and in business. This edition is a much-expanded version of the original miniature edition that appeared in the Shambhala Pocket Classics series. It features a wealth of new material, including a biography of Ueshiba; an essay by John Stevens that presents Ueshiba's views on "The Art of War versus the Art of Peace"; newly translated doka, didactic "poems of the Way"; and Ueshiba's own calligraphies.

Book Description :

Sun Tzu, author of 'The Art of War', believed that the acme of leadership consists in figuring out how to subdue the enemy with the least amount of fightinga fact that America's Founders also understood, and practiced with astonishing success. For it to work, however, a people must possess both the ability and the willingness to use all available instruments of power in peace as much as in war. US foreign policy has increasingly neglected the instruments of civilian power and become overly dependent on lethal solutions to conflict. The steep rise in unconventional conflict has increased the need for diplomatic and other non-hard power tools of statecraft. The United States can no longer afford to sit on the proverbial three-legged national security stool ("military, diplomacy, development"), where one leg is a lot longer than either of the other two, almost forgetting altogether the fourth leginformation, especially strategic communication and public diplomacy. The United States isn't so much becoming militarized as DE civilianized. According to Sun Tzu, self-knowledge is as important as knowledge of one's enemy: "if you know neither yourself nor the enemy, you will succumb in every battle." Alarmingly, the United States is deficient on both counts. And though we can stand to lose a few battles, the stakes of losing the war itself in this age of nuclear proliferation are too high to contemplate.

Book Description :

In Touching Peace, Thich Nhat Hanh expands the teachings on practicing the art of mindful living begun in the best selling Being Peace by giving specific, practical instructions on extending our meditation practice into our daily lives. The book reminds us to focus on what is refreshing and healing within and all around us, and how, paired with the practice of mindful breathing, it can be used as the basis for examining the roots of war and violence, alcoholism and drug abuse, and social alienation. Touching Peace offers Thich Nhat Hanh’s vision for rebuilding society through strengthening our families and communities, and realizing the ultimate dimension of reality in each act of our daily lives. The book concludes with the author’s profound vision and determination to make efforts to alleviate the suffering of all people. Included are such classic Thich Nhat Hanh practices as the conflict resolution tool of the Peace Treaty; his thoughts on a "diet for a mindful society" based on his interpretation of the 5 Mindfulness Trainings, and his early writings on the environment. "When we touch peace everything becomes real." –Thich Nhat Hanh With 10 original illustrations by Mayumi Oda

Book Description :

Conflict resolution. Strategy for success. Contemplation. What is most interesting about the discussion of the Art of War and Peace (AWP) is the necessity of establishing a basic understanding of the title. If the understanding of name is not comprehended, the reason for the composition becomes unclear. It is my intention is for the reader to understand that the rules governing the Art of War are the same rule that govern the Art of Peace. The aims that govern one, govern the other and it is logically essential that to understand one, we must understand the other. We can only understand the nature of conflict resolution if we understand the causes of conflict. What marries the Art of War and Peace is the concept that armed conflict should be avoided as expressed in the words of Sung Tzu, "The superior person wins his battles without fighting." The reality of The Art of War and the Art of Peace is that conflict is inevitable. Therefore we should prepare ourselves for this reality. The resolution of conflict comes from our own ability to overcome it by knowledge of the rules of engagement. Conflict survives because of doctrines of attrition. Attrition extends our reasons to commit to conflict, limiting our sight and vision that are necessary to continue forward. The Art of War and Peace is a training guide that is essential to those who wish to create a greater meaning of what we do. The words and meaning will be out of reach to those who are orthodox in their understanding. The reality is, "We are only limited by the beliefs we have." If our beliefs are expandable, we will understand well the art.

Book Description :

An informed modern plan for post-2020 American foreign policy that avoids the opposing dangers of retrenchment and overextension Russia and China are both believed to have “grand strategies”—detailed sets of national security goals backed by means, and plans, to pursue them. In the United States, policy makers have tried to articulate similar concepts but have failed to reach a widespread consensus since the Cold War ended. While the United States has been the world’s prominent superpower for over a generation, much American thinking has oscillated between the extremes of isolationist agendas versus interventionist and overly assertive ones. Drawing on historical precedents and weighing issues such as Russia’s resurgence, China’s great rise, North Korea’s nuclear machinations, and Middle East turmoil, Michael O’Hanlon presents a well-researched, ethically sound, and politically viable vision for American national security policy. He also proposes complementing the Pentagon’s set of “4+1” pre-existing threats with a new “4+1”: biological, nuclear, digital, climatic, and internal dangers.

Book Description :

Let’s form a UNION for a Healthy Society It is no secret that we live in a materialistic society. Materialism is based on competition and the ultimate competition is war. Our world’s history is best told as an endless series of wars. Recently many people have discovered the word holistic and some even have a good idea of what it means. A holistic approach is based on cooperation and is typifies by seeking balance between ideas that seem to conflict with one another. This approach leads to dialogue and compromises and theoretically ultimately to a peaceful society. The holistic approach has traditionally been depicted by the yin/yang symbol. Peace has been elusive. War and peace are mutually exclusive as are cooperating and competing and materialistic and holistic. There are two separate directions that society can choose but we cannot choose both. A materialistic social dogma uses slavery to create a two-class society of rulers and subjects and the rulers desire central control. A holistic social dogma fosters individual liberty and human rights by decentralizing power with checks and balances. Rarely an opportunity arises where it is not only possible to change course but changing course becomes essential to survival of the human race. If we take the time to understand how a simple choice has led to perpetual war and an insane arms race then we can also understand that the option for peace and prosperity is a viable option. Creating a holistic society will be a challenge and maintaining it will take teamwork. I am attempting to provide a blueprint. Change is inevitable so lets make it a smooth transition!

Book Description :

Garnering awards from Choice, Christianity Today, Books & Culture, and the Conference on Christianity and Literature when first published in 1998, Roger Lundin's Emily Dickinson and the Art of Belief has been widely recognized as one of the finest biographies of the great American poet Emily Dickinson. Paying special attention to her experience of faith, Lundin skillfully relates Dickinson's life -- as it can be charted through her poems and letters -- to nineteenth-century American political, social, religious, and intellectual history. This second edition of Lundin's superb work includes a standard bibliography, expanded notes, and a more extensive discussion of Dickinson's poetry than the first edition contained. Besides examining Dickinson's singular life and work in greater depth, Lundin has also keyed all poem citations to the recently updated standard edition of Dickinson's poetry. Already outstanding, Lundin's biography of Emily Dickinson is now even better than before., the volume begins with a look at early christology and covers the whole of the New Testament from the Gospels to Revelation.
