Book Description :

With Sketches of Manners and Scenes in America as they existed previous to the Revolution. Mrs. Grant of Laggan, as she was called, spent several years of her childhood in America, where her father was in the military service, returning to Scotland in 1770, at the age of fifteen. The “ American lady ” who is here described is Mrs. Schuyler of Albany, an aunt of Gen. Schuyler, a lady of great character and intelligence, in whose household the young Scotch girl was for some time on a very intimate footing. The volume shows a remarkable tenacity of memory, as well as a graceful and animated pen. The first forty-three chapters (out of sixty-six) are of a general nature, giving a lively sketch of society and manners among the Dutch families at Albany, and a somewhat detailed history of the Schuyler family. The rest of the volume describes the author's own experiences, chiefly at Oswego, where her father's regiment was stationed, and afterwards at Albany.

Book Description :

The fascinating story of one of the grand dames of Georgetown society and a true Washington insider Henry Kissinger once remarked that more agreements were concluded in the living room of Susan Mary Alsop than in the White House. A descendent of Founding Father John Jay, Susan Mary was an American aristocrat whose first marriage gave her full access to post-war diplomatic social life in Paris. There, her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Isaiah Berlin, Evelyn Waugh, and Christian Dior, among other luminaries, and she had a passionate love affair with British ambassador Duff Cooper. During the golden years of John F. Kennedy’s presidency—after she had married the powerful journalist Joe Alsop—her Washington home was a gathering place for everyone of importance, including Katharine Graham, Robert McNamara, and Henry Kissinger. Dubbed “the second lady of Camelot,” she hosted dinner parties that were the epitome of political power and social arrival, bringing together the movers and shakers not just of the United States, but of the world. Featuring an introduction by Susan Mary Alsop’s goddaughter Frances FitzGerald, American Lady is a fascinating chronicle of a woman who witnessed, as Nancy Mitford once said, “history on the boil.”

Book Description :

Excerpt from Memoirs of an American Lady: With Sketches of Manners and Scenes in America, as They Existed Previous to the Revolution After we had announced our design to republish Mrs. Grant's "History of an American Lady," we received from Mr. Grant Thorburn, of New York, the ensuing letter, which is so characteristic of the parties, and so apposite, that we prefix it to the work; as the recent and final attestation of the narrator to the fidelity of the biographical records with which her attractive volume is replete. New York, 1845. Having heard that you contemplate the republication of the "American Lady," by the late Mrs. Grant, of Langan, Scotland, and having been personally acquainted with her, I thought it proper to present to you a few circumstances anent the authenticity of that very interesting history. It is not a romance; nor a novel, nor a fiction, nor a tale partly founded on reality - but it is an authentic detail of facts. Mrs. Grant was the daughter of Duncan McVickar, and was born in 1755. Her father came to this country in 1757, as an officer in the fifty-fifth regiment of the British army. In the following year, 1758, Mrs. McVickar and her daughter also arrived in New York; and speedily after removed to Claverack, where she resided while Mr. McVickar was absent on military service with his regiment. After which his family were first transferred to Albany, and thence subsequently were stationed at Oswego. The description of that romantic journey, as given in the American Lady, from Schenectady to Oswego, in flat-bottomed boats, is one of Mrs. Grants most pleasing efforts; and excited great attention when the volume was first published in London, in 1808.
