ABSTRACT: Modified Karnaugh map for ternary logic synthesis and logic circuit realization in ternary quantum dot cellular automata (tQCA) is presented in this research article. This modified mapping technique is used for the realization of ternary proposition logic and greater minimization in ternary logic synthesis in tQCA. The comparison is made with earlier proposed ternary mapping technique for logic minimization. The tQCA logic circuit design is also described. The tQCA layout of diverse logic gates like ternary majority voter (TMV), ternary inverter (T_INV), and ternary wire (T_WIRE) circuit is explored. In case study, 3:1 tQCA multiplexer design and tQCA layout is presented.

Abstract This paper describes a Content Addressable Memory (CAM) architecture and its ternary variant called Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) using the Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA). QCA is an alternative to the current integrated circuit (CMOS) paradigm based on the characteristics of confinement and mutual repulsion between electrons. It is expected to run with clocks in high frequency (in THz order), in nanometers scale and with very low energy consumption. First, this work presents the basic building blocks (1-bit memory cell, array of memory cells, ternary memory line and encoder). Then, we describe the complete TCAM and CAM architectures. Finally, the proposed architectures are tested and validated using QCADesigner simulator, attesting their functionalities. If QCA consolidates as a possible CMOS substitute, this study can impact the design of future components that uses TCAM and CAM such as routers and switches respectively.

Electroanalytical and optical properties of nanoscale materials are very important for biosensing applications as well as for understanding the unique one-dimensional carrier transport mechanism. One-dimensional semiconductor nanomaterials such as semiconductor quantum dots are extremely attractive for designing high-density protein arrays. Because of their high surface-to-volume ratio, electro-catalytic activity as well as good biocompatibility and novel electron transport properties make them highly attractive materials for ultra-sensitive detection of biological macromoleculcs via bio-electronic or bio-optic devices. A genosensor or gene based biosensor is an analytical device that employs immobilized deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probes as the recognition element and measures specific binding processes such as the formation of deoxyribonucleic acid-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA-DNA), deoxyribonucleic acid- ribonucleic acid (DNA-RNA) hybrids, or the interactions between proteins or ligand molecules with DNA at the sensor surface. In this thesis, I present four binary and two ternary-electrochemically and optically modulated selenide and telluride quantum dots, all synthesised at room temperature in aqueous media. Cationic gallium (Ga3 ) synthesized in form of hydratcd gallium perchloratc salt [Ga(CI04)3.6H20] from the reaction of hot perchloric acid and gallium metal was used to tailor the optical and electrochemical properties of the selenide and telluride quantum dots. The synthesized cationic gallium also allowed successful synthesis of novel water soluble and biocompatible capped gallium selenide nanocrystals and gallium telluride quantum dots.

The Solar Photochemistry Research Conference brings together grantees and contractors of the Division of Chemical Sciences who are engaged in fundamental research on solar photochemical energy conversion. The annual conference provides a focus for the program by allowing for the exchange of new information and ideas, identification of needs and opportunities, and fostering of collaborations among investigators of disparate chemistry backgrounds. The synergy that has been achieved is a major strength of the program. The research provides the foundations for future solar technologies, in which light-induced charge separation processes will be applied to conversion of light energy to chemical energy, e.g., production of alcohols from carbon dioxide, hydrogen from water, ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen, or other needed chemicals at lower cost of by using sunlight as the energy source. The program includes topical sessions on semiconductor nanoparticles, nanocrystalline films, and photoinduced charge separation at the semiconductor/liquid interface; photochemistry and photophysics of transition metal complexes; photoinduced charge separation in zeolites and lamellar assemblies; intramolecular charge separation and electron transfer; dynamics of solvation and solution interfaces; and photoconversion via porphyrins and biomimetic constructs. The special guest plenary lecturer is Professor Moungi Bawendi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who spoke on semiconductor nanocrystallites (quantum dots). As an added feature, Tom Surek, the Photovoltaics Technology program manager at NREL, presented a status report on one of the most promising and heavily supported programs in solar energy conversion technology, solid state photovoltaics. This volume contains the agenda for the meeting, abstracts of the 31 formal presentations and 55 posters, as well as an address list for the 111 participants.
