Book Description :

Anchorage control is one of the most challenging tasks in orthodontic treatment. Many different types of appliance are used to control anchorage, but an excellent outcome may be difficult to achieve owing to either poor mechanics or inadequate patient compliance. Recently, temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) have become popular in orthodontics. Some orthodontic movements that are now possible using TSADs were previously considered almost impossible with traditional orthodontic appliances. Several different types of TSAD are currently available, and in choosing between them orthodontists are obliged to rely on the information provided by manufacturers, which is often not based on scientific evidence. This book therefore presents the various design characteristics of TSADs and provides up-to-date scientific evidence to assist orthodontists in selecting the best TSADs for their patients.

Book Description :

Anchorage control is an important factor in the successful outcome of any orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic anchorage unit should be resistant to unwanted tooth movement. There have been many attempts to device suitable anchorage methods, including extra oral and intra oral appliances. Extra oral anchorage devices like head gears depends entirely on the patient's cooperation where as intra oral appliances such as TPA, Nance appliances etc are inadequate in controlling the anchorage units. To overcome the limitations of conventional anchorage methods, recent advancement of microimplants (temporary anchorage devices;TAD) are been introduced in orthodontic treatment. Advantages of this system includes miniature size, ease of placement and insertion at many intra oral areas, immediate/early loading of force for adequate anchorage support in orthodontic tooth movement. This comprehensive knowledge on microimplants includes evolution of implants, review of literature till today, indications & contraindications, advantages & disadvantages, implant criteria like size, shape, design etc, various clinical applications and in final, complications associated with them in orthodontic treatmen

Book Description :

Patient compliance, anchorage preservation and lack of anchor units often present a perplexing problem for orthodontics, mainly because of a lack of effective devices. Headgear, which is used to control anchorage and requires patient cooperation, is a device that has been used in orthodontics for at least 100 years. Despite longevity in the field, however, the use of headgears has given only moderate success. In recent years, with the introduction of temporary anchorage devices (TADs), a paradigm shift has occurred in the overall perspective towards patient compliance, preservation of anchorage and facilitation of treatment for various types of malocclusions.

Book Description :

Skeletal anchorage would offer capabilities heretofore unavailable. They expand the range of biomechanical possibilities with screws, pins or other implant systems anchored to the jaws, so that forces might be applied to produce tooth movement in any direction without detrimental reciprocal forces on the anchor teeth. Orthodontic forces might be applied directly to the jaws through skeletal anchorage1. Intra-oral skeletal anchor units that are predictably stable, relatively noninterfering, biocompatible and comfortable could make appliance design simplified and more efficient. Progress in the use of implants and in the development of specialized newer systems has made skeletal anchorage a more reliable and standardized one. As orthodontists begin to appreciate the efficiency of implant supported appliances; the mechanotherapeutic procedures may undergo profound transformation.

Book Description :

Orthodontics is the presumed beneficiary of a variety of new technologies and protocols intended to hasten tooth movement, improve outcomes, and streamline treatment. Some are supported by data, some are not. This volume focuses on the biology and biomechanics of tooth movement, with emphasis on effectiveness and efficiency. The claims of supporters -- ardent and otherwise -- are examined via evidence-based studies that look at such techniques du jour as corticotomies, self-ligating bracket systems, temporary anchorage devices, and proposed pharmacological adjuncts. In addition, canine impaction and primary failure of eruption are discussed. The genetic basis of such clinical problems as root resorption also is considered. Contributors to this volume include Charles Burstone, Peter Miles, Tiziano Baccetti, Nan Hatch, James Hartsfield, Haluk Y_eri, Ravindra Nanda, Peter Buschang, and Flavio Uribe, Lorenzo Franchi, Sylvia Frazier-Bowers, Dan Grauer, Laura Iwasaki, Giuseppe Perinetti and Chester Handelman.

Much of the information in this book comes from experience as well as lectures, courses, and journals. This second edition has been revised and expanded to cover: Digital advances in photography and radiology Digital intra oral scanning Lingual orthodontic treatments Temporomandibular joint disturbances Temporary anchorage devices Impacted canines Interdisciplinary treatment Risk management Marketing of the orthodontic practice The expanded orthodontic team Continuing education and its relevance to orthodontic practice Written in an informal style, more akin to a seminar or tutorial, this book provides readers with information helpful in both the administrative and clinical components of their orthodontic practice. It is essential reading for all practitioners--even the most experienced orthodontists--who wish to improve their skills and knowledge in the clinical treatment of patients.
