We consider this topic to possess great importance. Our choice has also been influenced by the fact that there are many quest ions as yet unre solved. Standard general relativity describes space-time as a four-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifold, but it does not prescribe its large-scale structure. Inorderto attempt answers to some topological questions, such as whether our universe is open or closed, whether it is orientable, and whether it is complete or possesses singularities, various theoretical approaches to global aspects of gravitational physics are presented here. As topological questions playa role in non-standard theories as weIl, it will be found that some of the lectures and seminar talks in this volume adopt the point of view of standard relativity, whereas others are based on different theories, such as Kaluza-Klein theories, bimetric theories, and supergravity. In the course of the development of electromagnetic, weak and strong interactions, the concept of (internal) gauge invariance grew up and established itself as an unavoidable dynamical principle in particle physics. It is less known that the principle of equivalence, and the basic dynamical properties of the gravitational interaction can also be expressed as a (spacetime) gauge symmetry. Gravitation and Gauge Symmetries sheds light on the connection between the intrinsic structure of gravity and the principle of gauge invariance, which may lead to a consistent unified field theory. The first part of the book gives a systematic account of the structure of gravity as a theory based on spacetime gauge symmetries. Some basic properties of space, time, and gravity are reviewed in the first, introductory chapter. The next chapter deals with elements of global Poincare and conformal symmetries, which are necessary for the exposition of their localizations; the structure of the corresponding gauge theories of gravity is explored in chapters 3 and 4. Then, in chapters 5 and 6, we present the basic features of the constrained Hamiltonian of Poincare gauge theory, discuss the relation between gauge symmetries and conservation laws, and introduce the concept of gravitational energy and other conserved quantities. The second part of the book explores the most promising attempts to build a unified field theory containing gravity, on the basis of the gauge principle. The thesis contains a study of spacetime structure and symmetries presented from a few different perspectives. Geodesics of massless and massive particles are investigated in strong gravitational fields. Circular orbits and the existence of the so-called photon sphere are considered in Schwarzschild geometry and in Schwarzschild-like spacetimes arising from Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. Communication by means of radial electromagnetic signals is studied in the vicinity of the event horizon in Schwarzschild spacetime where Kruskal-Szekeres coordinate system is employed. In the case of flat Minkowski spacetime the spontaneous breakdown of relativistic symmetries is analyzed in the framework of quantum field theory. Lorentz invariance violation occurs due to the presence of higher order derivative terms in the action. The consistency of effective theories with derivatives of higher order is established in lattice regularization, using the property of reflection positivity. The extended model of scalar QED, where vacuum violates Lorentz symmetry, is constructed and its main features, including quasi-particle content, are described.

It is generally believed that the structure of spacetime as a classical manifold will cease to exist at distances of the order of the Planck length. A theory of gravitation on a noncommutative spacetime could be compatible with quantum mechanics and capture the expected nonlocality of physics at very small distances, while reproducing Einstein s general relativity at long distances. We consider gravitation as a gauge theory of the Poincaré symmetry and aim at generalizing this point of view to noncommutative spacetimes. The important role of the Poincaré symmetry in relativistic physics is reviewed. The formulation of quantum field and gauge theories on noncommutative spacetime is presented, emphasizing the recently discovered twisted Poincaré symmetry of these theories. Some formulations of gravitation on noncommutative spacetimes proposed in the literature are also discussed. Finally, we study the possibility to formulate the twisted Poincaré symmetry as a gauge symmetry of gravitational theory on a noncommutative spacetime. Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.
