Book Description :

The need for energy is increasing and but the production from conventional reservoirs is declining quickly. This requires an economically and technically feasible source of energy for the coming years. Among some alternative future energy solutions, the most reasonable source is from unconventional reservoirs. As the name “unconventional” implies, different and challenging approaches are required to characterize and develop these resources. This Special Issue covers some of the technical challenges for developing unconventional energy sources from shale gas/oil, tight gas sand, and coalbed methane.

Book Description :

The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has made it essential to have a ground-up review of all resources and that this indispensable for the successful delivery of all goals, notably for SDG 7 on access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all and SDG 13 on climate action. The energy and climate-related goals have a bearing on uranium resources, one of the clean, low-carbon energy sources. This report shows how uranium resources could create a platform for innovative engagement with the integrated challenge of natural resource management and climate action. The United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC), the comprehensive resource management scheme, provides the necessary tools and conditions for the redesign of the uranium resource pathway. This report argues that the conventional model of uranium as a mineral commodity needs to give way to a new model of uranium as a “critical energy material” for meeting the global sustainability objectives on energy and climate action.

Book Description :

Shale oil contributes more than 60% to the US oil production. Shale oil production has been feasible because of technological development for horizontal wells with multistage hydraulic fracturing. However, after primary production, more than 90% of the oil is left behind in shale oil reservoirs due to ultra-low permeability. For an average well the oil production rates fall sharply in the first year because of the extremely low permeability, micro-fracture closure, and large flow resistance at the matrix-fracture interface. To sustain oil production from shale oil, it is essential to develop enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques for unconventional reservoirs. In this dissertation, lab experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of chemical treatment, gas huff-n-puff, and/or both on EOR in shale oil reservoirs. Surfactant treatment on shale was studied. Static adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption behavior of surfactant on shale samples. An additive model was built to estimate the adsorption capacity given the mineral composition and TOC of shale samples. A series of surfactant screening process, including aqueous stability tests, contact angle measurements, interfacial tension measurements, and spontaneous imbibition experiments, was used to compare the performance of surfactants at reservoir conditions. Surfactant blends were compared with single surfactants, and the surfactant blends showed improved oil recovery compared to most single surfactants. Chemical blends showed good EOR potential in Eagle Ford formation, and the effects of solvents in chemical blends were investigated via spontaneous imbibition process. Chemical blends with solvents showed improved recovery compared to the brine-only controlled case, and the Green Solvent showed the most promising results among the five solvents tested. Cyclic gas injection was investigated with CO2 and hydrocarbon gases. CO2 huffn-puff showed about 40% oil recovery, and it was observed that the huff pressure to which the cores were pressurized with CO2 did not affect the oil recovery significantly as long as the pressure was high enough. A combination of chemical blend with CO2 was more effective compared to pure CO2 huff-n-puff (40% → 64%). The hydrocarbon gas (60% C1 + 35% C2 + 5% C3) showed a similar effectiveness as CO2, which can be used to replace CO2 depending on availability and cost. Also, a numerical simulation model was built to investigate the key parameters in the gas huff-n-puff qualitatively. The learning from these simulations can be used for future experimental design

Book Description :

HANDBOOK of BIOMASS VALORIZATION for INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS The handbook provides a comprehensive view of cutting-edge research on biomass valorization, from advanced fabrication methodologies through useful derived materials, to current and potential application sectors. Industrial sectors, such as food, textiles, petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, generate massive amounts of waste each year, the disposal of which has become a major issue worldwide. As a result, implementing a circular economy that employs sustainable practices in waste management is critical for any industry. Moreover, fossil fuels, which are the primary sources of fuel in the transportation sector, are also being rapidly depleted at an alarming rate. Therefore, to combat these global issues without increasing our carbon footprint, we must look for renewable resources to produce chemicals and biomaterials. In that context, agricultural waste materials are gaining popularity as cost-effective and abundantly available alternatives to fossil resources for the production of a variety of value-added products, including renewable fuels, fuel components, and fuel additives. Handbook of Biomass Valorization for Industrial Applications investigates current and emerging feedstocks, as well as provides in-depth technical information on advanced catalytic processes and technologies that enable the development of all possible alternative energy sources. The 22 chapters of this book comprehensively cover the valorization of agricultural wastes and their various uses in value-added applications like energy, biofuels, fertilizers, and wastewater treatment. Audience The book is intended for a very broad audience working in the fields of materials sciences, chemical engineering, nanotechnology, energy, environment, chemistry, etc. This book will be an invaluable reference source for the libraries in universities and industrial institutions, government and independent institutes, individual research groups, and scientists working in the field of valorization of biomass.

Book Description :

This second and expanded edition of the first book on agromining (phytomining) presents a comprehensive overview of the metal farming & recovery of the agromining production chain. Agromining is an emerging technology that aims to transform the extraction of sources of target elements not accessible by traditional mining and processing techniques. Agromining, which is based on sustainable development, uses hyperaccumulator plants as 'metal crops' farmed on sub-economic soils or minerals wastes to obtain valuable target elements. This volume is edited and authored by the pioneers in the rapidly expanding field of agromining and presents the latest insights and developments in the field. This book provides in-depth information on the global distribution and ecology of hyperaccumulator plants, their biogeochemical pathways, the influence of rhizosphere microbes, the physiology and molecular biology of hyperaccumulation, as well as aspects of propagation and conservation of these unusual plants. It describes the agronomy of metal crops and opportunities for incorporating agromining into rehabilitation and mine closure, including test cases for agromining of nickel, cobalt, manganese, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, zinc, thallium, rare earth elements and platinum group elements. Since the first edition was published, there have successful nickel agromining field trials in the tropics (in Malaysia and Guatemala), and these are presented in a dedicated case study chapter. Other new chapters focus on the processing of bio-ore for elements other than nickel, such as rare earth elements and cadmium, and on agromining from industrial wastes such as tailings, and industrial by-products and sites. Furthermore, the book features two new chapters that provide a comprehensive assessment of accumulation a very wide range elements from the Periodic Table in various plant species around the globe, and a chapter on practical methods for discovery of hyperaccumulator plant species in the field and in the herbarium. This book is of interest to environmental professionals in the minerals industry, government regulators, and academics.
