Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Market research, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Munich, language: English, abstract: Over the past couple of decades, environmental and social issues started to have a raising impact on corporate and marketing strategies. Fundamental changes in business environments like rising public awareness about environmental issues, tougher national and international regulations and foreseeable depletion of natural resources within the next few decades will sooner or later force the big players from all industries to rethink their strategies. Thus, they need to evaluate innovative product solutions that save scarce natural resources and reduce energy consumption during the entire product life cycle. Taking corporate responsibility, developing sustainable value chains and moving away from oil-based resources will be of growing importance. Thus, incorporating sustainability into value chains increasingly becomes an issue across all industry sectors from automobiles to textiles. The engagement in sustainability marketing is an opportunity, which helps to create a long-term competitive advantage. The challenge on the other hand is understanding the complexity of green consumerism and to implement the right strategic measures to overcome motivational issues to sell green products successfully. The fact that marketing should combine environmental, social and economic goals has also been realized in the fashion industry as the authors research and interviews with industry veterans proves. This thesis is located at the interface between sustainability marketing and conservation psychology. The purpose of this publication is to further the understanding of green consumerism in the context of environmentally friendly clothing.

Book Description :

Many sustainable garments do not engage wide consumer interest, nor encourage eco-conscious purchasing. Meanwhile, mass consumption of unsustainable apparel contributes to environmental degradation (Black, 2008). However, Niinimäki (2010) suggests that engaging consumers in the design and development of environmentally sustainable products could improve the balance between environmental design decisions and functional, aesthetic, and emotional qualities (Lamb & Kallal, 1992). The purpose of this practice-based research was to (a) identify apparel and environmental attitudes and consumption behaviors of potential sustainable apparel consumers, (b) generate sustainable apparel design concept and product through use of participatory design methods, and (c) evaluate the sustainable concept, product, and participatory method. The sample was 10 female university students. Consumer data was collected through an online (i.e., Facebook) ethnographic journal and a focus group. Qualitative analysis generated the target market's ideal apparel characteristics and ideal environmental apparel characteristics as apparel offering versatility and variety within their existing wardrobes; elements expressive of their personalities; simple and inexpensive maintenance; organic or recycled materials; and less textile waste at disposal. Additionally, it was determined that participants had low knowledge of the apparel and textile industry and its environmental impacts. Generation of sustainable apparel design ideas occurred through a second focus group session. Analysis of the focus group data, combined with the researcher's tacit sustainable design knowledge, formed a design concept. The sustainable apparel design concept was comprised of three characteristics reflective of the target market's ideals and design suggestions: be versatile through various temperatures; social settings, and environments; be convertible through temporary adjustment of functional and aesthetic elements; and be transitional allowing the garment to be layered for greater thermal insulation without detracting from the appearance. The sustainable apparel concept was an application of the pre-existing Design for User Interaction sustainable design strategy. The sustainable apparel design concept was then applied to the development of an outerwear garment and presented to the participants and mentors as a digital sketch. The design addressed the sustainable design concept through interchangeable envelope-style shell layers, an insertable thermal core layer, a buttoned closure at the hemline and interconnecting button points for added alignment between layers. In this garment, the researcher applied participants' suggestions of style, materials, and inclusion of a core layer. Following sketch refinement, two prototypes were constructed. The first prototype consisted of a thermal core layer and outer coat layer. Due to challenges with the core layer fabric, the second prototype modified the core layer material and style. Additionally, in the second prototype, the shell was made sleeveless and both a bolero style jacket and lining were added. Dual button fasteners connected the layers. During the third focus group session, participants evaluated the design concept, second garment prototype, and the participatory design methods. Participants noted that the design concept provided increased ease of garment care (which could potentially increase the frequency of laundering); ease of garment storage; and increased versatility through varying temperatures. Participants' suggestions for prototype refinement included the addition of a kick-pleat and reduction of button alignment points. Prototype development did not reach completion during this study. Further refinement of the garment's pattern and fit, implementation of additional aesthetic/functional elements, and development of an intuitive transformation are necessary. Participant evaluation of participatory methods and study participation were the use of Facebook as an online ethnographic journal made daily participation easy and allowed the researcher to become familiar with their personalities, increasing their comfort at later stages of the research. Participants felt their suggestions were evident in the garment prototype and were as involved as their experience and knowledge allowed. The only participant suggestion regarding the participatory design experience was the addition of updates informing participants of the design progress between focus group sessions. Though the concept and resulting garment were not exceedingly original, participants were pleased with the fruition of their ideas. This finding indicates a willingness to participate in the design process, supportive of participatory design.

Book Description :

he purpose of this project was to develop a scale to measure sustainable apparel consumption. This study used concept analysis to identify attributes of sustainable apparel consumption. Within an academic online database, a search for articles containing "sustainable consumption" in their titles was performed. Within each article, the attributes associated with sustainable consumption were identified. Based on the attributes found, The researcher developed an initial sustainable apparel consumption measurement scale, and then conducted a series of quantitative tests to examine its reliability and validity. The findings of this study resulted in 11 sustainable apparel consumption (SAC) scales and generalizable to both those who and those who do not practice sustainable consumption. The SAC scales created an overall standard of sustainable consumption in apparel by including the three main stages of consumption, pre-acquisition, acquisition and post-acquisition, and three principles of sustainability, social responsible behaviors and environmentally oriented behaviors. The results showed statistically acceptable internal reliability and validity. The major contributions of this group of scales are to clarify the behaviors associated with sustainable apparel consumption and consequently to provide a measurement scale foundation for future research. The 11 scales represent 11 behavioral dimensions within consumption which should be used separately to investigate consumers' consumption behaviors including consumers' need recognition; consumption behaviors towards products' environmental impact, e.g., whether consumers will purchase an apparel made from organic and recycled materials; consumption behaviors towards products' social impact, e.g., whether consumers will purchase an apparel made from ethical manufactures and retailers; consumption behaviors towards perceived manufacture and retailers environmental and social commitment, e.g., the degree to which consumers prefer to purchase apparel linked to manufacturers and retailers who are identified with environmental and social causes; point of purchase behavior, e.g., whether consumers will by second-hand clothes; continued use, e.g., whether consuemrs will continue to wear an item which is damaged ; repurpose behavior, e.g., whether consumers will repurpose an item which is damaged; alteration for maintenance, e.g., whether consumers will alter an item which is not fit; use of eco-cleaning processes, e.g., whether consumers use eco-friendly detergent; and divestment behavior (give it away), e.g., whether consumers will donate their unwanted clothes.

Book Description :

"During recent decades, the importance of environmentally sustainable apparel consumption has been emphasized by researchers and marketers because the apparel industry is responsible for several concerns related to the environment. However, despite numerous studies on environmental apparel consumption, current research on the behavior of older consumers is limited. Older consumers have recently grown in their collective purchasing power and are increasingly consuming more apparel; thus, for the purpose of sustainable development, it is important to examine their environmentally sustainable apparel consumption. The purpose of this study is to explain the consumption of environmentally sustainable apparel among elderly consumers. Built on socioemotional selectivity theory (SST) and the positivity effect, this study attempts to discover whether the time perspective of elderly consumers explains their environmentally sustainable apparel consumption. Moreover, by comparing advertisement appeal types, the study further examines how purchase intentions toward environmentally sustainable apparel may be enhanced. This research was conducted with female participants who were 65 years of age or older at the time of this study. A survey questionnaire obtained information about the respondents' environmentally sustainable apparel consumption, time perspective, fashion consciousness, and purchase intention toward shirts shown in environment-related advertisement stimuli. In order to test the ten proposed hypotheses, a total of 154 usable responses were collected from members of organizations (e.g., churches, YMCAs, and senior centers) in North Carolina. The findings showed that older female adults with expansive time perspectives were more likely to behave sustainably when purchasing apparel (H1), with their fashion consciousness moderating this relationship between time perspective and environmental apparel consumption (H1a). Although emotional appeals did not have stronger effects on purchase intention than rational (H2a) or control appeals (H2b), it was discovered that rational advertisements can encourage the environmental purchase intentions of elderly consumers more effectively than advertisements with no environmental messages (H2c). Positive emotional messages were not more persuasive than negative emotional messages (H3a), but they nevertheless enhanced environmental purchase intentions more than control advertisements (advertisements with no messages about environmental sustainability) (H3b). There were no significant differences between negative emotional and control appeals (H3c). These results offer several implications. The time perspective of elderly women is shown to have considerable influence on their environmental behavior. Expansive time perspective is correlated with higher environmentally sustainable apparel consumption than limited time perspective, likely because expansive time perspectives emphasize future-oriented goals, which align strongly with the concept of sustainability. Thus, apparel retailers are advised to consider time perspective as well as age when encouraging environmental consumption; furthermore, their clothing items would benefit from higher levels of fashion consciousness. Environmental messages containing rational information and eliciting positive emotions can also encourage purchase intentions toward environmentally sustainable apparel among elderly consumers. The limitations of the study and suggestions for future studies are discussed as well."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Description :

There is no doubt that the textile industry – the production of clothing, fabrics, thread, fibre and related products – plays a significant part in the global economy. It also frequently operates with disregard to its environmental and social impacts. The textile industry uses large quantities of water and outputs large quantities of waste. As for social aspects, many unskilled jobs have disappeared in regions that rely heavily on these industries. Another serious and still unresolved problem is the flexibility textile industry companies claim to need. Faced with fierce international competition, they are increasingly unable to offer job security. This is without even considering the informal-sector work proliferating both in developing and developed countries. Child labour persists within this sector despite growing pressure to halt it.Fashion demands continuous consumption. In seeking to own the latest trends consumers quickly come to regard their existing garments as inferior, if not useless. "Old" items become unwanted as quickly as new ones come into demand. This tendency towards disposability results in the increased use of resources and thus the accelerated accumulation of waste. It is obvious to many that current fashion industry practices are in direct competition with sustainability objectives; yet this is frequently overlooked as a pressing concern. It is, however, becoming apparent that there are social and ecological consequences to the current operation of the fashion industry: sustainability in the sector has been gaining attention in recent years from those who believe that it should be held accountable for the pressure it places on the individual, as well as its contribution to increases in consumption and waste disposal. This book takes a wide-screen approach to the topic, covering, among other issues: sustainability and business management in textile and fashion companies; value chain management; use of materials; sustainable production processes; fashion, needs and consumption; disposal; and innovation and design. The book will be essential reading for researchers and practitioners in the global fashion business.

Book Description :

This book analyses the importance of consumer behaviour in sustainable fashion and consumption. Consumer behaviour plays a major role in sustainability, and when it comes to textile products, a number of studies have shown that for certain product categories, consumer behaviour during use and disposal stages influences the entire life cycle impacts of the product more than the raw material and manufacturing stages. However green the production, the overall sustainability of a product depends on the consumers who use and dispose of it.
