Book Description :

Sustainability in Denim provides the latest information on sustainable fabrics and practices. From cotton farming, to manufacture and end of life disposal, denim has extensive effects on the environment, inclusive of water consumption and contamination, destruction of large-scale ecosystems and transportation pollution. Additionally, recent developments in the manufacture of denim, such as the use of textiles, including elastane and polyester, have led to limitations in the high end recycling of denim. This book includes an introduction covering the history, manufacture and lifecycle of denim. It deals with the sustainability aspects of denim by addressing three important pillars of sustainability, the environmental, social and economic aspects, that when combined, present a unique approach in comparison to other books on the topic. The book primarily uses case studies to examine sustainability challenges throughout the denim lifecycle, and to evaluate new green initiatives and recycling processes. It will be of great use to industry professionals, sustainability managers, textile industry researchers and denim manufacturers. Reviews and studies denim from a sustainability perspective, addressing its major environmental, social and economic impacts Provides the reader with a fundamental knowledge of the history, manufacture and lifecycle of denim, thus enabling a holistic view of denim sustainability Presents new green initiatives for the processing and recycling of denim products for promotion and use amongst sustainability groups

Book Description :

This study investigates the topic of Eco- sustainability in the Jeanswear sector. The objectives are (1) to focus on Sustainable Development and Green Marketing in the Denim industry, (2) substantiate all of the theory through the tangible case of Levi's(r) Eco Jeans and (3) rank the factors that consumers value while making jeans purchase decisions. The survey instruments consist of both a questionnaire and of a qualitative research. The data stemming from the questionnaire are analyzed using factor analysis and the most important criterion for jeans assessment turns out to be related to Practicality. A structural model is developed in order to test whether the Eco- sustainability factor is influenced by some sociographical variables: the findings are thoroughly illustrated. Based on the evidence of the model, on the results obtained through the qualitative and quantitative research and on the observation of the market and of society, recommendations on "green" strategies for the companies active in the Denim industry, and in particular for Levi Strauss & CO., are provided. Finally, hypotheses for future research are also presente

Book Description :

Consumers spend approximately $93 billion on denim products every year. This consumption comes at a great cost, with thousands of litres of fresh water, hazardous chemicals and energy contributing to just one pair of jeans, leaving the environment and the industry vulnerable to pollution and climate change. Using facts, figures, case studies and anecdotes, this book investigates why the industry has been so slow to adopt green technologies and offers practical solutions to designers and fashion executives who want to switch to cleaner manufacturing, including those working in the ‘fast fashion’ sector. It also offers advice to the eco-conscious consumer who wants to purchase denim more sustainably. Considering the full lifecycle of a pair of jeans from the cotton crop to disposal, it presents examples of how to go green at different stages. This book will be of great interest to fashion students and researchers, as well as designers, fashion executives, policy-makers and anyone who comes into contact with the world of denim.

Book Description :

In recent years, the apparel industry has placed increasing importance on upcycling. The upcycling idea goes along with sustainability, which aims to maintain a wealthy and healthy life and avoid any environmental, economic, and social problems. The purpose of this project is to provide an example practice of how to revitalize discarded clothing by adding value through upcycling, creativity, and sustainability. The value showed through applying a three-dimensional surface on the clothing by manipulating the fabric with origami techniques and weaving methods. A conceptual framework for apparel design (Lamb & Kallal, 1992) (FEA Theory below) was used to explain, guide, and analyze the production process. The project produced a contemporary couture collection made with upcycled denim. Finally, the seven looks in the collection were analyzed by the FEA theory's key aspects: functional, expressive, and aesthetic.

Book Description :

Corporate sustainability, now regarded as a vitally important topic on the agenda for businesses, has in recent years not only become embedded in postgraduate study, but is now also widely taught at the undergraduate level in business schools. Corporate Sustainability Leadership reflects the growing need for an accessible text at all levels of study. The book brings the topic of corporate sustainability fully up to date by incorporating new directions in the areas of corporate responsibility and sustainability. Written by the authors of the highly successful Understanding Business Ethics, this book provides a primary resource for any undergraduate or graduate corporate sustainability class. Unlike other textbooks in corporate sustainability, which are often edited collections from multiple authors, this book develops themes throughout each chapter using a consistent voice to ensure an integrative learning experience for both students and instructors. With ten chapters and ten cases, all of which are supplemented with online test banks, instructor guides, and PowerPoint slides, this textbook provides enough content for a complete class on corporate sustainability. Using stakeholder theory as a foundation, Corporate Sustainability Leadership allows readers to develop a better understanding of how organizations can effectively satisfy the needs of their critical stakeholders. It addresses the issues of corporate sustainability from both a micro and macro perspective. Micro issues related to corporate sustainability include leadership, organizational change, management decision making, human resource organizational strategies, organizational ethics, organizational culture, corporate sustainability reporting, corporate sustainability performance, and corporate compliance. The macro issues addressed include suppliers, corporate sustainability communications, consumers, the natural environment, governments, NGOs, and the developing world. In addition, there are ten unique company cases from organizations that are household names, such as Bayer, Shell, Volkswagen, and Dow Chemical.

Sustainability – this word has found multiple dimensions in the recent past; encompassing environmental, social, and economical aspects. We are currently running on an ecological debt, which requires immediate and intense focus. Natural resources of our planet are getting depleted even more quickly than it can be regenerated by the earth. Until recently, businesses did not consider the way they did business. The results were seen in the planet’s eco systems, and climate. Companies are now; accountable to work with social responsibility; combining economic progress with social justice, and environmental concern. Hence social responsibility themes are given special focus to give consistency, and reality to socially conscious management. These themes have started to display efficacy in business.

Book Description :

The thematic focus of this bachelor thesis lies in the research field of sustainability management at the Institute for Economy and the Environment of the University of St. Gallen. The thesis deals with the identification of alternative production methods in the denim industry, in particular regarding water consumption and pollution. The interest in this research topic is due to the environmental and social issues faced today and the need for businesses to shift from "business as usual" to a more sustainable approach. The theoretical foundations are based on previously conducted studies about pressure on water linked to a specific product. The own investigation is conducted with the help of a qualitative problem-solution approach and analyses which alternative methods to conventional denim production exist. The results of the interviews as well as secondary research show that there exist a variety of alternative methods that optimise and innovate the production process and the product itself to reduce performed pressure on water resources. Therefore, the issue does not rely on insufficient alternative methods but rather on the will and the capacity of businesses to implement them.

Sustainability Compendium is an informative sourcebook that holds detailed description of hundreds of sustainable textile companies filtered from different categories of the textile value chain. This compendium gives the featured companies a voice to narrate their sustainable story to the corporate world. Each participant have a space in this feature to present their sustainable activities setting an example that would lead others to join the sustainable drive. Sustainable, is what it has to be Fashion in itself is a dynamic industry, and if you choose to look at fashion solely from the sustainability point of view, then keeping track of developments is simply not easy. Inventions, innovations and ideas have already changed the narrative, and the axioms of the business of fashion that dominated the discourse at the turn of the century, today sound hopelessly outdated and out-of-place. ‘Sustainable fashion’ was just another segment of the industry till even in the early half of this decade. But not anymore. Thought leaders are unanimous about one thing—sustainable fashion can no more be a niche, and many of them agree that if it ain’t sustainable, then it ain’t fashion. By and by, many brands are lending credence to that idea, while for many others the idea is just beginning to sink in. This is where this compendium comes in—with ideas. There are many articles in this volume that discuss different aspects threadbare. ‘Fashionable=Sustainable. Is that even possible?’ argues that there is more to sustainable fashion than meets the eye. The article asserts that the relationship between fashion and sustainability is active and complex, and each time we look at the key ideas or issues at stake, different aspects seem to come to light. It looks at sustainability in manufacturing, working conditions of garment workers, and the role of the fashion designer in the entire process. Therein, ‘Revitalising a lifestyle’ is an interview with Edric Ong, an award-winning Malaysian designer of natural textiles, fashion and crafts. Currently, Senior Vice-President of the World Crafts Council Asia Pacific, he set up the World Eco-Fibre and Textile (WEFT) Network to further the cause of natural fibres and dyes. In a freewheeling interview, Ong talks about sustainable fashion and where it is going globally, and how it can be made a more permanent mode of retail fashion. He also talks about his well-known experiments with ikat, and points out that eco-lifestyle is about going back to the basics. ‘The True Cost of Fast Fashion’ goes ahead to underline the fact that it is indeed possible to improve and impact almost every aspect of the production process and factors such as scale, technical viability and global supply chains are no longer limiting as long as businesses are committed to paying the true cost of production. And, ‘No, fast is not sustainable’ takes a deep dive into the entire gamut of fashion, right from the birth of the concept to the explosive growth of the segment, and finally the backlash. I hope this fourth edition will give you thoughts to mull over and even implement some in your day to day business.

Book Description :

When thinking about lowering or changing consumption to lower carbon footprints, the obvious offenders come easily to mind: petroleum and petroleum products, paper and plastic, even food, but not clothes. When people evaluate ways to lower their personal carbon footprint by changing purchasing habits, they are bombarded with information to avoid petroleum and petroleum products, plastics, paper, even food, but not clothes. Most consumers do not think of clothes as a source of environmental damage. Yet, clothes are made with petroleum products through chemically-laden industrial processes that generate significant pollution. The fashion industry is among the largest organic water polluters in the world, accounting for significant greenhouse gas emissions and generating massive amounts of waste as a function of the frequent discarding of used clothing. In the Dirty Side of the Garment Industry: Fast Fashion and Its Negative Impact on Environment and Society, author Nikolay Anguelov exposed the ecological damage from the fast-fashion business model. In this book, The Sustainable Fashion Quest: Innovations in Business and Policy, the author takes this one step further by focusing on solutions. This book uses the familiar (yet complex) industry of fashion as a lens to examine how business pressures and national and international policies can have both positive and negative social and ecological impacts. It provides an analysis of extant and emerging policies to address the divergence in the ongoing quest to maximize economic development and minimize the social costs of the industrialization process. It also examines emerging technologies and innovative business models that have the potential to revolutionize how fashion is perceived, manufactured, and consumed. This book begins with an introductory letter that outlines the social and environmental issues facing the fashion industry, as well as emphasizing the seriousness and urgency of addressing them. Each chapter then focuses on a major aspect of the industry with an increasing emphasis on policy. The chapters outline the impact of global-level and business-level decisions on the industry’s success, its social and environmental impact, and its relationship to consumers. The goal of the book is to define that transition, explain its challenges, and educate readers on the possibilities to become powerful drivers of change through their professional actions and their personal behavior as consumers. While the book specifically analyzes the fashion industry, it also explains the implications for other industrial sectors. It uses a product everyone is familiar with (we all buy clothes, after all) to examine the decisions, impacts, and policies shaping the industry behind the scenes. The linkages are applicable to other fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) business sectors, such as consumer electronics, which are starting to face sustainability criticism for relying on a business model of promoting a high frequency of repeat purchasing.
