Book Description :

Sundarban Mangrove Wetland: A Comprehensive Global Treatise provides an illustrative accounting of the ecology, biology, conservation and management strategies of this endangered UNESCO World Heritage Site. The book's author addresses emerging ecological problems through a broad perspective, including eutrophication and pollution, sea level rise, alternations in sediment transport, chronic human-induced modifications, over-harvesting fisheries, and other non-living resources, along with the occurrence of natural catastrophic events such as storms and floods. The Sundarban wetland is important globally and provides a great reference point for comparisons to be made with other wetlands status, environmental challenges, and solutions. This resource is a reliable and up-to-date reference for students, teachers and researchers engaged in the field of marine ecology, aquatic botany, environmental science, chemical oceanography, marine pollution and ecotoxicology, and wastewater treatment. It provides both basic and advanced information that is helpful for policymakers, resource managers, coastal zone managers, and all involved in coastal resource conservation and management. Presents an in-depth and illustrative accounting of an iconic tropical mangrove wetland in an intelligible and easy-to-understand manner Provides a unique look at the ecology, biodiversity and conservation and management of the Sundarban wetlands, along with the emerging ecological issues that may affect long-term sustainability Focuses on several case studies, considering microzooplankton and trace metals in the Sundarban wetlands

Book Description :

This book offers a comprehensive and accessible guide covering various aspects of trace metal contamination in abiotic and biotic matrices of an iconic Indian tropical mangrove wetland – Sundarban. Divided into nine chapters, the book begins by discussing the fundamental concepts of sources, accumulation rate and significance of trace metal speciation, along with the impact of multiple stressors on trace metal accumulation, taking into account both tourist activities and the exacerbating role of climate change. The second chapter presents a detailed account of the sampling strategy and preservation of research samples, followed by exhaustive information on sediment quality assessment and ecological risk, instrumental techniques in environmental chemical analyses, quality assurance and quality control, along with the Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs). Using raw data, the sediment quality assessment indices (e.g., pollution load index, index of geoaccumulation, Nemerow Pollution Load Index etc.) and conventional statistical analyses are worked out and interpreted precisely, allowing students to readily evaluate and interpret them. This is followed by chapters devoted to trace metal accumulation in sediments and benthic organisms, as well as acid-leachable and geochemical fractionation of trace metals in sediments. The book then focuses on chemical speciation of butylin and arsenic in sediments as well as macrozoobenthos (polychaetous annelids). Finally, potential positive role of the dominant mangrove Avicennia in sequestering trace metals from rhizosediments of Sundarban Wetland is elaborately discussed. This timely reference book provides a versatile and in-depth account for understanding the emerging problems of trace metal contamination – issues that are relevant for many countries around the globe.

Book Description :

This book delves into human-induced and natural impacts on coastal wetlands, intended or otherwise, through a series of vignettes that elucidate the environmental insults and efforts at amelioration and remediation. The alteration, and subsequent restoration, of wetland habitats remain key issues among coastal scientists. These topics are introduced through case studies and pilot programs that are designed to better understand the best practices of trying to save what is left of these fragile ecosystems. Local approaches, as well as national and international efforts to restore the functionality of marsh systems are summarily approached and evaluated by their efficacy in producing resilient reclamations in terms of climate-smart habitat conservation. The outlook of this work is global in extent and local by intent. Included here in summarized form are professional opinions of experts in the field that investigate the crux of the matter, which proves to be human pressure on coastal wetland environments. Even though conservation and preservation of these delicate environmental systems may be coming at a later date, many multi-pronged approaches show promise through advances in education, litigation, and engineering to achieve sustainable coastal systems. The examples in this book are not only of interest to those working exclusively with coastal wetlands, but also to those working to protect the surrounding coastal areas of all types.

Book Description :

This book is an integrated approach to present a detailed case study in order to address the taxonomic and ecological features of this planktonic choreotrich protists in an iconic tropical mangrove wetland - Sundarban. To identify each tintinnid species, emphasis is given with regards to taxonomic features accompanied by high resolution images. This work explores the interaction between man-induced stress and the impact of climate change which is threatening the tintinnid biodiversity, and suggests, for example, remedial measures by adopting sound management strategies. Tintinnids (Protozoa: Ciliata: Tintinnida) are a coherent group ecologically recognized as micro-zooplankton. They deserve special attention because of their unique biodiversity and their crucial, functional role in the marine food chain. This is a valuable reference source for students, researchers, policy planners and coastal managers engaged in the field of marine biology, microbial ecology and marine bio-resources.

Book Description :

This book, Biodiversity of Mangroves is a maiden endeavour of this, or by any other author, to unveil the hidden and rich treasure of biotal, physiographic, tribal, marine, coastal and other resources bringing under one umbrella- The Mangroves . It also highlights Tiger-Man interaction and rendenvous of innumerable invertebrate and vertebrate fauna, endemic and rare biota ot two premier mangrove sites situated at northern and southern apexes of The Bay of Bengal. The author does not merely layout checklists of plants and animals, birds and fishes, he also brings forth-facts on site-specific species, species association, endemism, biogeographic and other qualities. The most attractive and realistic aspect of Tiger Cult; and Man-Tiger interaction of Sundarbans have been brought to light. For the Bay Islands, indepth facts on several vanishing tribals, rare and endemic biota, problem and issues of Tropical Rain Forest and conservation strategy have been identified. Sundarban s mangrove history remains a sterile subject Sans Tiger-Man interaction and without revelation of Tiger s behavi-oural pattern; Similarly, without the vanishing tribals struggle for existence and stress stricken biotal s survival history the bay Islands remain in dark. In this field the author takes the pride to bring forth very many hidden qualities of these two mangrove forests to light so far not considered by any to discuss under one umbrella. The presentation has been made mostly from the author s own experience and involvement in scientific work, and his findings in both the areas which have also been recorded in books and various research papers since 1970. The readers are sure to have a realistic conception of the resources, problems and conservation strategy at a glance which is a unique presentation of the author.
