Book Description :

P.S. Krishnan is a retired IAS officer widely known for his long-standing involvement in social justice activism. His vast experience in social and political activism makes him a goldmine of information on a variety of subjects that make the news today in India. This book is an attempt to bring his unique experiences and his beliefs to the attention of interested readers, especially those with a passion for activism. The former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University V.Vasanthi Devi is to be thanked for planting in us the idea to come out with this book. We had asked her a few years ago to write a brief article on P.S. Krishnan, which was to serve as a foreword for another book we published in Tamil titled ‘Sathi Olippukkana Chennai Piragadanam’ (Chennai Declaration on Caste Eradication). She told us that a brief article wouldn’t do P.S. Krishnan justice. So instead we asked her to help us publish a book that would allow the ideas and experiences of P.S. Krishnan to be set out lucidly for interested readers. She agreed to take up this task and decided to pose 50 questions to P.S. Krishnan, thus enabling him to talk about his life’s mission and his experiences in his own words. Social justice is the heart and soul of democracy. However, the very concept of social justice is under attack today in India, with multinational corporations becoming extremely powerful actors and with people belonging to disenfranchised communities struggling to claim the rights provided to them by the Constitution. We therefore live in a time when there is a need to mobilize and fight the forces that threaten India’s long-standing commitment to social justice. We hope that this book and the thoughts of P.S. Krishnan will serve as an inspiration for everyone who wishes to bring about a more just and inclusive India.

Book Description :

In Critical Suicidology, a team of international scholars, practitioners, and people directly affected by suicide argue that the field of suicidology has become too focused on the biomedical paradigm: a model that pathologizes distress and obscures the social, political, and historical contexts that contribute to human suffering. The authors take a critical look at existing research, introduce the perspectives of those who have direct personal knowledge of suicide and suicidal behaviour, and propose alternative approaches that are creative and culturally sensitive. In the right hands, this book could save lives.

Book Description :

Through an ethnohistorical chronicling of the emotionally-laden treatment of selected suicide media-events, this book offers a neo-Durkheimean account of suicide, addressing its social-moral threat and the ensuing need to gloss over its unsettling incomprehensibility. An analysis of the social dramas, cultural performances, and suicide talk aired in the Israeli public sphere, it suggests that such public glossing practices atone for and bring about the symbolic rectification of the socially detrimental effects of suicide. Drawing on Durkheim’s thought on the social significance of suicide and the sacred cohesive power of society’s self-representations through rituals and commemorations, the authors revamp the contemporary pertinence of these cultural devices, showing how, in the process of reconstituting and redressing the disrupted order, suicide talk constitutes a revival mechanism of communal ‘life giving’. A rekindling of the Durkheimian approach to suicide that examines how society deals with suicide’s shattering of normative we-feelings, Suicide Social Dramas: Moral Breakdowns in the Israeli Public Sphere will appeal to scholars and students of sociology and anthropology with interests in social theory, Israel studies, suicide studies, and the interpretation of societal and cultural processes.

Book Description :

Modern society is beset by a vast range of problems – such as poverty, homelessness and terrorism – that cause immense suffering for a significant number of people. These social problems both reflect and contribute to wider inequalities; consequently, in order to develop a true understanding of them, we must consider the social injustices with which they are inextricably linked. In this ground-breaking text, Neil Thompson turns his attention to the range of complex issues relating to social problems and social justice, and the relationship between them. With the help of engaging features that have become synonymous with his books, Thompson provides a clear exploration of some key social problems currently challenging us, analysis of the connection between social problems and social justice, and a review of how social policy initiatives to tackle these issues have fared to date. Innovative and absorbing, Social Problems and Social Justice is essential reading for students and practitioners across a wide range of social science disciplines and the social professions.

Book Description :

Sociological and psychiatric studies on suicide based on Western ideas about human nature see suicide as social or individual disorder. Suicide in China, however, should be understood differently. By analyzing 30 cases, Wu Fei studies the dynamics of suicide in terms of family politics and local psychology and finds that suicide is committed when a power balance is broken in the games of power in the family. Unlike public injustice, domestic injustice is not only closely related to, but also often strengthened by emotional interdependence. Suicide and depression are different responses to the same situation of domestic injustice. The book also covers suicide as perceived by rural people outside the family; how suicide is viewed in politics; suicide prevention and studies of suicide in Chinese modern intellectual history. Showing that suicide in China is not mainly caused by too traditional values, but reflects a dilemma in Chinese modernity, this book should be of interest to students and scholars in Chinese studies; sociology; anthropology and suicide studies.

Book Description :

Thought leaders examine social justice counseling from a global perspective in the latest edition of this pioneering book. Part 1 examines the historical and contemporary context of social justice counseling. Part 2 presents ideas for promoting social justice and challenging oppression and marginalization with individual clients and communities. Topics in this section include perspectives on peace, violence, and conflict; recommendations for global initiatives in school counseling; advocacy for decent work; promoting gender equity; fighting racism; and implementing social action strategies with LGBTQ+ communities, older people, people with disabilities, and undocumented immigrants. Part 3 contains chapters on the role of neuroscience in advancing social justice and infusing social justice perspectives in ethics, research, and counselor training. "This third edition could not come at a better time given the current national and global political climates. Lee and his colleagues raise the bar, challenging counselors to move from simply understanding social injustice to engaging in actions that improve systemic inequities. The magnitude of this charge cannot be ignored. This text should be mandatory in every counselor education program in the United States and across the globe; the time is now. Counselors must take the lead by leaning in and changing the world one person at a time, one community at a time, and one nation at a time." —Colleen R. Logan, PhD, Fielding Graduate University "Courtland Lee continues to be a leader in helping to advance social justice in the counseling profession. This book builds on previous editions by offering new and emerging strategies for implementing social justice with clients and communities. It pushes the limits of what is possible when counselors incorporate social justice into their practice." —Manivong J. Ratts, PhD, Seattle University "This text provides crucial information on how counselors can engage in social justice work throughout their practice, research, and advocacy activities to not only become effective change agents but also transform how we see ourselves and the world." —Anneliese A. Singh, PhD, University of Georgia *Requests for digital versions from the ACA can be found on wiley.com. *To request print copies, please visit the ACA website here. *Reproduction requests for material from books published by ACA should be directed to [email protected]

Book Description :

This book will help the reader to understand the suicidal mind from a phenomenological point of view, shedding light on the feelings of suicidal individuals and also those of clinicians. In accordance with the importance that the phenomenological approach attaches to subjectivity and sense of self as the starting points for knowledge, emphasis is placed on the need for the clinician to focus on the subjective experiences of the at-risk individual, to set aside prior assumptions, judgments, or interpretations, and to identify ways of bridging gaps in communication associated with negative emotions. The vital importance of empathy is stressed, drawing attention to the insights offered by neuroimaging studies and the role of mirror neurons in social cognition. It is widely acknowledged that when a clinician meets a person who wants to die by suicide, the clinician does not fully understand what is going on inside the mind of that individual. This book recognizes that any approach to suicide prevention must promote understanding of suicidal thoughts and feelings. The awareness that it fosters and the innovative perspectives that it presents will appeal to a wide readership.
