Book Description :

Strategies for Curative Fluorescence-Guided Surgery of Cancer is the first book to discuss how fluorescence-guided surgery can be successfully used during surgeries with several tumor types. FGS is one of the most exciting emerging modalities of surgery, especially cancer surgery, as it potentially allows the surgeon to visualize the actual margin of the tumor, thus greatly increasing the possibility of curative resection. The book discusses the applicability of FGS for several types of cancer, such as pancreatic cancer, liver metastasis, soft-tissue sarcoma, glioma, melanoma, and breast and lung cancer. This book is a valuable resource for cancer surgeons, cancer researchers and members of several other areas in the biomedical field who are interested in understanding this powerful technique. Presents an overview of fluorescence-guided surgery Explains general strategies for curative fluorescence-guided surgery and their applicability for each major tumor type Discusses the current and future achievements of FGS as a precise technique for cancer surgeries

Book Description :

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has the poorest five-year survival rate of any cancer. Currently, there are no effective diagnostics or chemotherapeutics. Surgical resection is the only curative therapy. However, most patients experience recurrence due largely to challenges in assessing tumor margin status in the operating room. Molecular probes that selectively highlight pancreatic cancer tissue, having the potential to improve PDAC margin assessment intraoperatively, are urgently needed. In this work, a series of red and near-infrared fluorescent probes is reported. Two were found to distribute to normal pancreas following systemic administration. One selectively accumulates in genetically modified mouse models of PDAC, providing cancer-specific fluorescence. In contrast to the small molecule probes reported previously, it possesses inherent affinity for PDAC cells and tissue, and thus does not require conjugation to targeting agents. Moreover, the probe exhibits intracellular accumulation and enables visualization of four levels of structure including the whole organ, tissue, individual cells and subcellular organelles. It can thus promote new strategies for precision image-guided surgery, pancreatic cancer detection, the monitoring of therapeutic outcomes and basic research.

Book Description :

Convert the latest genomic data to the most effective patient management and treatment approaches Clinical Genomics helps healthcare providers translate the vast amount of new genomic data into successful clinical application. It is a comprehensive textbook and practical guide to the use of this information across a broad spectrum of adult diseases – from individual differences in drug responses, cardiac and cancer risks to Alzheimer's and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. While traditional textbooks on medical genetics focus on classic Mendelian disorders, Clinical Genomics discusses the everyday application of genetic assessment and the diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive implications to the most common adult diseases that healthcare providers encounter. Covering approximately 200 conditions, it is a true clinical text for use across all of internal medicine. Coverage of each condition is presented in a consistent, clinically relevant manner and includes: Key Points Diagnostic Criteria and Clinical Characteristics Screening and C ounseling Management and Treatment Molecular Genetics and Molecular Mechanism Supplementary Information More than ten valuable appendices, include Genetic Privacy; Race, Ancestry, and Genetics; Personalized Medicine in Clinical Practice; Clinical Interpretation of Genomic Data; and Genetic Risk Profiling in the Genomics Era. Clinical Genomics is essential for internists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare providers who wish to increase their knowledge of the gene-and-protein level care of patients in a clinical setting.
