Book Description :

States and Processes for Mental Health: Advancing Psychotherapy Effectiveness presents a novel mechanism of action for psychotherapy, revealing how psychotherapy actually works by advancing key states and processes characterizing mental health. This new understanding is presented in three sections. The first section identifies 7 states and processes for mental health. The second section examines 15 major forms of psychotherapy and non-specific factors with a comprehensive overview of each, followed by an empirical and theoretical proof of concept showing how they do indeed enhance the states and processes for mental health. In the third section, the author explores conceptual and practical problems in the current approach to psychotherapy, whereby discrete forms of psychotherapy are oriented to remedying psychopathology. Dr. Bowins then offers a new trans-therapy approach applying general strategies and those derived from existing forms of psychotherapy, to advance each of the states and processes characterizing mental health. Identifies states and processes for mental health-activity, psychological defense mechanisms, social connectedness, regulation, human specific cognition, self-acceptance, and adaptability Reveals how current forms of psychotherapy and non-specific factors actually advance the states and processes characterizing mental health Demonstrates problems with the current system of psychotherapy Provides a novel unified approach to psychotherapy

Book Description :

The Sociology of Mental Illness is a comprehensive collection of readings designed to help students develop a nuanced and sophisticated appreciation of the most important, heated--and fascinating--controversies in the field. Drawing primarily from sociological sources, the text features both classical and contemporary selections that cover the full range of sociological topics, perspectives, and debates, including the social construction of mental illness, the social origins of mental illness, and contemporary mental health treatment. This rich, varied assortment gives students a "roadmap" to the evolution and development of sociological research over time and insight into key controversies in the field. Selections include such classical readings as Scheff's original statement of labeling theory, contemporary reports on the prevalence of mental illness in countries around the world, and recent analyses of the changing treatment system. The readings are organized progressively in order to help students recognize the dynamic character of mental health research and the important role that controversies play in advancements in the field; this organization also gives students the tools they need to formulate their own views and opinions on crucial matters. A versatile, engaging text, The Sociology of Mental Illness is ideal for undergraduate and graduate courses in the sociology of mental illness.

Book Description :

Landmark events, such as the 50th anniversary of the Eisenhower Commission Report and the same anniversary of the Community Mental Health Act, helped launch the community mental health movement. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the President's New Freedom Commission have continued this work by establishing funding sources and highlighting the importance of recovery and excellence in care. Modern Community Mental Health: An Interdisciplinary Approach integrates each of the key concepts contained within the presidential reports and landmark legislation into the context of today's community service delivery system. This pathfinding textbook promises to revolutionize community mental health training by responding to the realities of modern health care delivery systems, presenting an integrated, interdisciplinary paradigm of care. Extraordinarily broad in coverage, it will open a door of possibilities to those caring for the mentally ill in the community. Recognizing that community-based services must be truly collaborative in order to be effective and efficient, the editors have assembled a cast of contributors from among the brightest lights in community practice. Chapter authors, who are currently doing interdisciplinary work successfully on a daily basis, will collaborate on writing teams to offer their insight into the problems and triumphs that are part of this approach. They will cover not only macro issues such as the economics of behavioral healthcare, reimbursement models, and quality improvement, but the specific skills necessary for competent practice such as treatment planning, clinical documentation, risk management, and partnering with members of a team that may include social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses. Twenty additional chapters will provide detailed roadmaps to practices and programs that have been shown to be effective when delivered in a community setting--such as supported employment, assertive community treatment (ACT) teams, crisis intervention training (CIT), family psychoeducation, and supported housing--and will be grounded in educational benchmarks, healthcare reform opportunities, and cultural competencies. By definition community mental health practice is never static. As communities change, the profession changes, and in recent years changes in funding have drastically impacted the system of care. We need empirically supported interventions, to include the voice of the consumers and their families, and have a way to educate current and future professionals so that we all truly work together.
