Book Description :

From the acclaimed, best-selling author Adam Hochschild, a sweeping history of the Spanish Civil War, told through a dozen characters, including Ernest Hemingway and George Orwell: a tale of idealism, heartbreaking suffering, and a noble cause that failed For three crucial years in the 1930s, the Spanish Civil War dominated headlines in America and around the world, as volunteers flooded to Spain to help its democratic government fight off a fascist uprising led by Francisco Franco and aided by Hitler and Mussolini. Today we're accustomed to remembering the war through Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls and Robert Capa’s photographs. But Adam Hochschild has discovered some less familiar yet far more compelling characters who reveal the full tragedy and importance of the war: a fiery nineteen-year-old Kentucky woman who went to wartime Spain on her honeymoon, a Swarthmore College senior who was the first American casualty in the battle for Madrid, a pair of fiercely partisan, rivalrous New York Times reporters who covered the war from opposites sides, and a swashbuckling Texas oilman with Nazi sympathies who sold Franco almost all his oil — at reduced prices, and on credit. It was in many ways the opening battle of World War II, and we still have much to learn from it. Spain in Our Hearts is Adam Hochschild at his very best.

Spain In Our Hearts by Adam Hochschild | Summary & Analysis Preview: Adam Hochschild's Spain In Our Hearts is an account of the involvement of US citizens in the Spanish Civil War. It focuses on the experiences of a number of individual volunteers and reporters and provides a broad view of how the war affected Spain, the United States, and Europe. The Spanish Civil War began as a conflict between a democratically elected left-wing government, the Spanish Republic, and right-wing military officers led by General Francisco Franco. At the same time, workers in Catalonia, Aragon, and Andalusia staged a revolution against landowners and established anarchist communities in some areas. These revolutionaries joined with the Republic to fight the fascists. Fascist dictators Benito Mussolini in Italy and Adolf Hitler in Germany provided extensive weaponry and manpower to Franco. Josef Stalin of Communist Russia sent more limited aid to the Spanish Republic. The leaders of the Republic hoped Western democracies, such as France, Britain, and the United States... Book Description :

"This volume is a reprint of newspaper reports of a series of lectures delivered by the author from the pulpit of Congregation B'nai Jehudah, Kansas City, Mo., during the Fall and Winter of 1885-1886. The lectures were prepared to fulfill the requirements of popular discourses, and designed to convey information upon a highly important epoch of the world's history, that is almost neglected in English literature. The thought of publishing these lectures in book form was utterly foreign to the author throughout their preparation, until an urgent solicitation from very many persons, both Jews and Gentiles, in all parts of this country, whose interest in these lectures was aroused by their wide-spread republication by the Press, made it a duty."--Goodreads.com.

Book Description :

The late Renaissance in Spain was a period of progressive military, diplomatic and social defeat, and the spirit of the Spaniards, moving from confidence to doubt, reflected a growing disillusion with grandeur. After an examination of optimism and pessimism in terms of the baroque period, Professor Green discusses 'desengaño' - dillusion - as a related and prevalent factor. In its positive aspect, disillusion was a form of wisdom, that the Stoic Sapiens who was fully aware of what constituted the supreme good and was enticed by nothing else. The factors are apparent in the Spanish attitude toward death. When he writes in seriousness, the Spaniard of the baroque period recognises death the obedient executor of the will of a just and merciful God. Thus, the concept of the Spanish seventeenth century as one of total despair collapses in the presence of the evidence adduced. Far removed from attitudes of despondency, the originality of Spain's literary accomplishments reached full tide in the baroque period, a literary age characterized by the growth of a new sophistication. The use of brilliant metaphor, of allegory, of double and triple meanings of words to form bridges of intellectual association, is the result of a consistent growth that developed inevitably from the Renaissance style. -- Publisher's description.
