The intention of this book is to provide an impression of all aspects of p- tovoltaics (PV). It is not just about physics and technology or systems, but it looks beyond that at the entire environment in which PV is embedded. The ?rst chapter is intended as an introduction to the subject. It can also be considered an executive summary. Chapters 2–4 describe very brie?y the basic physics and technology of the solar cell. The silicon cell is the vehicle for this description because it is the best understood solar cell and also has the greatest practical importance. A reader who is not interested in the ph- ical details of the solar cell can skip Chap.2 and still understand the rest of the book. In general, it was the intention of the authors to keep the book at a level that does not require too much previous knowledge of photovoltaics. Chapter5isdevotedtoothermaterialsandnewconceptspresentlyunder- velopment or consideration. It intends to provide an impression of the many possibilities that exist for the conversion of solar radiation into electricity by solid state devices. These new concepts will keep researchers occupied for decades to come. Chapter 6 gives an introduction to cell and module techn- ogy and also informs the reader about the environmental compatibility and recycling of modules. The following chapters are devoted to practical applications. Chapters 7 and 8 introduce systems technology for di?erent applications. The envir- mental impact of PV systems and their reliability is the subject of Chap.9.

Book Description :

In the introductory and concluding chapters this book strive to satisfy the needs of the interested lay reader by addressing the potential, advantages, and costs of solar power plants. For the interested student, scientist, or technically oriented lay person the physical principles of insolation, its variability, concentration, and most efficient use are developed in some detail. Finally, experimental and theoretical developments in the recently created field of solar driven chemistry (via thermal, quantum, or electrical excitation) are described. The contributions in this book are written by leading solar scientists and engineering experts whose extensive background and experience in solar energy lend authenticity and completeness to the book. Design aspects of, and results from large experimental and demonstration plants are described by individuals who were directly involved in the design and testing of many of these plants. Consideration of the viability and future economics of large-scale solar power generation provides an outlook on the energy contributions which can be expected from an optional future supply of abundant and renewable energy, having little impact on the environment. This provides the rationale for the continued commitment to the development of solar power technologies by researchers, engineers, and industry. The eventual depletion of, or future political attacks on our energy supply will have less serious impact once this renewable option is in place.

Book Description :

The global demand for energy is currently growing beyond the limits of installable generation capacity. To efficiently meet the future energy demands, energy security and reliability needs to be improved and alternative energy sources required to be more aggressively investigated. An effective energy solution should be able to address long-term issues by utilising alternative and renewable energy sources. Of the many available renewable sources of energy, solar energy are clearly a promising option as it is abundantly available at most places and is also the cleanest energy resource on our planet. Solar power, especially as it reaches more competitive levels with other energy sources in terms of cost, may serve to sustain the lives of millions of underprivileged people in developing countries. The recent trends are to decrease the cost of the energy generation either by introducing the low cost processing techniques or by enhancing the efficiency of the solar cells. After the 1st and 2nd generation of the bulk silicon based - and thin-film Si/CdTe/CIGS based solar cells, the 3rd generation technologies are underway. The new technologies include photo-electrochemical cells, polymer solar, quantum dot, tandem / multi-junction, up-conversion and down-conversion, surface plasmonic and nano-crystal solar cells and other novel innovations and inventions. To deliberate on the current trends in solar power generation, its harnessing, storage, solar energy conversion, processing technologies, modeling and simulation plus engineering of the small solar energy generation plants and related issues, the Centre for Science & Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) jointly with the Amity University, UP, India - Dubai Campus organised an International Workshop on 'Trends in Solar Power Generation and Energy Harvesting' in Dubai during 27-29 March 2017 which brought together the senior experts and professionals from 23 countries to a common platform. The present book edited by editors Engr. Muhammed Musa Gaji and Dr. Abhishek Verma is a follow up of the above workshop and comprises 20 scientific papers by the authors from 17 countries covering several issues related to the status and trends of solar power generation, designing of solar cells, risk assessment of solar power plants and many other topics. The book will be an asset to the researchers, policy makers in government departments and ministries and non government organisations engaged in renewable energy related issues in the developing countries.

This book provides an up-to-date analysis of state-of-the-art concentrating solar power (CSP) generation. It focuses on the economic analysis of CSP generation technologies as well as the policies that have been and are being used around the globe to support it. The book describes the industrial sectors whose products make up the solar field, including the traditional manufacturers of turbines and generators. The authors provide the main theoretical tools needed to comprehend the costs of CSP technologies compared to other competing technologies (both conventional and renewable) and discuss the conceptual rationale behind creating public support for these technologies and the costs of various promotional techniques. Further, the book examines the concepts from different disciplinary traditions in economics (including environmental, innovation, industrial and public), which are then combined and integrated for an analysis of the costs and policies of CSP electricity.Addressing the main findings and the challenges for future CSP, the book is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners. It is also of use to industrial engineers, as it identifies the features of the sector’s supply chain value, rooted in and supported by an industrial economics approach.

The call for clean and environmental-friendly energy are getting louder by days. In this book, we discuss in details on the design and implementation of a mobile solar power generator with microcontroller as the core of the system, together with solar panels, real time clock IC, temperature and photo sensors, LEDs, an LCD display, a motor and a lead acid rechargeable battery. A sun tracking system which can constantly align the panels towards the direction of the sun is integrated in the solar energy system to make it more practical and feasible in maximizing the efficiency of solar absorption. The model developed is an intelligent system as a whole that manages both the usage of solar power harvested and the battery power, to display the time, date, battery's voltage and temperature on an LCD display, as well as control the rotation of the sun tracking system.
