Introduction: The solar energy conversion system's transient operation mode requires the engineering and economic analysis of the systems to be performed on the basis of an energy input to the system-solar energy flux on the collector area--properly defined in relation to time constants of the components and of the system itself. This situation becomes even more evident if it is considered that the value--maximum allowable cost--of the solar energy conversion system is also determined by the value of the substituted energy. The latter may depend, for instance, on how close the total utility load is to the peak value and this may depend, for some loads, e.g., air conditioning, on the atmospheric conditions at that time, and the latter will obviously also strongly influence the solar energy flux on the collector area. This synergy between solar energy flux, meteorological conditions and value of the energy substituted imposes not only a need for a non-steady state simulation, but also for a determininistic approach to the solar energy flux data bank construction. All these considerations, and more, are presented in the Introduction to the first volume of this series. Due to the worldwide dearth of solar energy data records, a deterministic approach, on the basis of a few "generally available" meteorological parameters, for the computation of the solar data is performed in this work, and a technique of construction of a "typical year" is developed and applied. In Volume I, the solar radiation characteristics and radiation laws are presented in Chapter I and Appendix Al; the computation of astronomical parameters is performed in Chapter 2; the interaction of the electromagnetic flux with the atmospheric components is discussed in Chapter 3; the solar energy flux depletion analytical model is presented n Chapter 4; and the correlation of the depletion to the meteorological parameters, as well as an analysis of the meteorological input data and presentation of alternative ways of computing some of the meteorological "state" parameters involved, are discussed in Chapter 5 and Appendices A2, A3, A4, A5, and A6. In Volume II, model implementation criteria and the first version of the code CIRR2 for the computation of global energy flux on the collector area on the basis of geographic, geometrical and meteorological parameters are presented in Chapter 5; an extensive analysis of the possibilities of the code and a comparison between computed and experimental results is accomplished in Chapter 6, while Appendix A 7 is on CIRR2 program description. The direct energy flux analytical model, an analysis of the results and a brief description of a non-steady state model of a thermal solar energy conversion system implemented on a code, SIRR2, as well as the coupling of the CIRR2 and SIRR2 are presented in this Volume III. In Volume III it is also shown how the CIRR2 and, mainly, the SIRR2 codes may be used for a proper design of a solar collector system. Volume IV consists of a complete description of the CIRR2 interactive computer program with all its subroutines, data bases and their organization, as well as various sample computer sessions, i.e., Volume IV may be considered as a self-sufficient operation manual for the CIRR2 code in its last version.
