Book Description :

"THE PEOPLE WHO ARE CRAZY ENOUGH TO THINK THEY CAN CHANGE THE WORLD ARE THE ONES WHO DO." With these words, Apple Inc., and its leader, Steve Jobs, catalyzed a movement. Whenever Jobs took the stage to talk about new Apple products, the whole world seemed to stop and listen. That’s because Jobs was offering a vision of the future. He wanted you to feel what the world might someday be like, and trust him to take you there. As a leader, you have the same potential to not only anticipate the future and invent creative initiatives, but to also inspire those around you to support and execute your vision. In Illuminate, acclaimed author Nancy Duarte and communications expert Patti Sanchez equip you with the same communication tools that great leaders like Jobs, Howard Schultz, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. used to move people. Duarte and Sanchez lay out a plan to help you lead people through the five stages of transformation using speeches, stories, ceremonies, and symbols. This visual and accessible communication guidebook will show you how Apple, Starbucks, IBM, charity: water, and others have mobilized people to embrace bold changes. To envision the future is one thing, getting others to go there with you is another. By harnessing the power of persuasive communication you, too, can turn your idea into a movement.

Book Description :

This monograph examines fundamental themes of equality and democracy prominent in Australian educational discourse and reform efforts during the past century, particularly since World War II. The first section argues that these ideals, while representing positive and progressive intentions, have not contributed to social justice but have led to educational outcomes inconsistent with democratic principles. In fact, Australian education has generally fostered social control rather than social mobility. Subsequent sections attempt to explain the Australian public's persistent acceptance of social and economic inequalities despite educational reforms intended to ameliorate these problems. The theoretical concepts of ideology, meritocracy, reproduction, and hegemony are discussed in relation to established school practices contributing to discrimination against minority children. The essay concludes by discussing ways to make genuine democracy and equality more central in school practices and curricula. Appended are 63 references. Four supporting readings include: "The School--The Institution and Its Controlling Bureaucracy" (B. Bessant), "Letter to an Alternative Teacher" (Bill Hannan); "Crisis of Legitimation: Schools, Society, and Declining Faith in Education" (Svi Shapiro); "Class, Gender and Livelihood? Some Implications for Education" (Johanna Wyn and Bruce Wilson). Also included is an annotated bibliography of 11 references. (MLH)

Book Description :

The jagged edges of South American societies attest to innumerable wars, relentless poverty, and a host of illicit activity that make the region a tumultuous brew of politics and military aggression. Peru in particular suffered one of the bloodiest civil wars in contemporary Latin American history during the 1980s and early 1990s, when the Sendero Luminoso, or “Shining Path,” launched an assault to overthrow the national government. Lewis Taylor focuses here on an under-examined yet crucially important aspect of this pivotal conflict, the Northern Front in the northern highlands of Peru. Shining Path opens with a historical overview of Sendero Luminoso, moving from its origins to how it grew to sufficient size and strength to attempt revolt. Taylor then probes the development and progress of the Sendero Luminoso’s revolutionary campaign from 1982 through 1992, analyzing the factors that catalyzed and sustained a war in which nearly 70,000 lives were lost. The nature of rural revolt and revolution is a central issue to this study, and Taylor investigates particular conflicts in the mountainous northern highlands as a vital case study for guerrilla warfare in harsh rural landscapes. The wars of the twenty-first century have been marked by the increasingly successful use of guerrilla warfare. Thus Shining Path is a timely analysis of the political and structural nature of such warfare and how it will transform the notion and actuality of war in years to come.
