Book Description :

The Electronic Properties Information Center has developed the Data Table as a precis of the most reliable information available for the physical, crystallographic, mechanical, thermal, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of a given material. Data Tables serve as an introduction to the graphic data compilations on the material published by the Electronic Properties Information Center, EPIC, as Data Sheets. Although the Data Sheets are principally concerned, according to the scope of the Center, with electronic and optical data, it is believed that data covering the complete property spectrum is of the first importance to every scientist and engineer, whatever his information requirements. The enthusiastic reception of these Data Tables has confirmed this opinion and increasing requests for this highly selective type of information has resulted in these III·-V Semiconductor Compounds Data Tables. The major problem in this type of selective data compilation on a semiconducting material, lies in the material purity. Properties may vary so widely with doping, crystallinity, defects, geometric forms and the other parameters of preparation, that any attempts at comparison normally fail. On this basis, we have consis tently attempted to give values derived from experiments on the highest purity single crystals or epitaxial films. At the very least, these data should be reproducible and this gives the data their principal validity. If such values however, are not available, then the next best data are reported, together with material speci fications. These latter include the carrier concentration and the dopant.

Book Description :

Electronic materials are a dominant factor in many areas of modern technology. The need to understand'them is paramount; this book addresses that need. The main aim of this volume is to provide a broad unified view of electronic materials, including key aspects of their science and technology and also, in many cases, their commercial implications. It was considered important that much of the contents of such an overview should be intelligible by a broad audience of graduates and industrial scientists, and relevant to advanced undergraduate studies. It should also be up to date and even looking forward to the future. Although more extensive, and written specifically as a text, the resulting book has much in common with a short course of the same name given at Coventry Polytechnic. The interpretation of the term "electronic materials" used in this volume is a very broad one, in line with the initial aim. The principal restriction is that, with one or two minor exceptions relating to aspects of device processing, for example, the materials dealt with are all active materials. Materials such as simple insulators or simple conductors, playing only a passive role, are not singled out for consider ation. Active materials might be defined as those involved in the processing of signals in a way that depends crucially on some specific property of those materials, and the immediate question then concerns the types of signals that might be considered.

Book Description :

This paper describes efforts taken in Institute of Applied Physics and Institute of Electronic Materials Technology to obtain several single crystals from borate family, namely CsLiB6O10 (CLBO) Ca4GdO(BO3)3 (GdCOB), Li2B4O7 (TBO), beta-BaB2O4 (BBO), and YAl3(BO3)4 (YAB), pure and doped with several ions. The main goal of this investigation was to develop technology of these new nonlinear optical materials to create possibility of their applications in higher harmonics generators and self-frequency doubling lasers. Depending on such properties of crystallized borate materials as incongruent melting or high temperature phase transitions, Czochralski technique or high temperature solution growth technique were used. The main aspects of crystallization of these materials as well as their optical properties are discussed.

Book Description :

The importance of materials science for the progress of electronic techno logy has been apparent to all since the invention of the transistor in 1948, though that epoch-making event was the result of far-sighted research planning by Bell Laboratories dating from a decade or more before: no mere chance discovery, therefore, but the fruition of work which allotted at its inception a vital role to materials. The transistor is now very old hat, but new materials developments are continually triggering fresh develop ments in electronics, from optical communications to high-temperature superconductors. Electronic engineers are now given at least two courses in materials as part of their degree programme. This book arose from a series of forty lectures the author gave to the third year students on the Extended Honours Degree Course in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughborough University, though additional elementary material has been included to make the book suitable for first year students. The biggest problem in such a course is deciding what must be left out, and this I am afraid I shirked by leaving out all those areas which I was not familiar with from my days in the Ministry of Aviation, the semiconductor device industry and as a graduate student and research worker. I hope that what remains is sufficiently catholic.

Book Description :

Mechanism of charge transport in organic solids has been an issue of intensive interests and debates for over 50 years, not only because of the applications in printing electronics, but also because of the great challenges in understanding the electronic processes in complex systems. With the fast developments of both electronic structure theory and the computational technology, the dream of predicting the charge mobility is now gradually becoming a reality. This volume describes recent progresses in Prof. Shuai’s group in developing computational tools to assess the intrinsic carrier mobility for organic and carbon materials at the first-principles level. According to the electron-phonon coupling strength, the charge transport mechanism is classified into three different categories, namely, the localized hopping model, the extended band model, and the polaron model. For each of them, a corresponding theoretical approach is developed and implemented into typical examples.

This book discusses various aspects of different bulk TSO single crystals in terms of thermodynamics; bulk crystal growth using diverse techniques involving gas phase, solution, and melt; and the resulting crystal size, appearance, and structural quality as well as the fundamental properties that were gathered from bulk single crystals. It presents experimental results accompanied by theoretical results, such as band structure and native defects. Combinations of various bulk single crystals along with their properties show great promise in practical device functionality and fabrication. Many TSO-based devices have already been demonstrated in several technical areas, including electronics, optoelectronics, and photovoltaics as well as sensing devices. The book is the first of its kind that brings together a variety of bulk single crystals of scientifically and technically important TSOs along with their properties, which may result in novel devices with unique functionalities.

Book Description :

The peaceful use of space flight systems for research and technological devel opments in the context of promoting European and international cooperation represents the essential motivation for the programmes of the European Space Agency (ESA). One of ESA's programmes is dedicated to microgravity research, which is now an established discipline in Europe, with a dedicated group of scientists participating. The Challenger disaster has resulted in a serious dis continuity of flight opportunities in the next few years but the forthcoming International Space Station, new launchers and reentry vehicles are expected to provide ample opportunities for microgravity research in the long term. Meanwhile parabolic aircraft flights, sounding rockets as well as the delayed Shuttle-dependent missions, Spacelab D-2, the IML-missions and EURECA I, will be employed to keep microgravity experimenters reasonably busy in the interim period. To prepare the ground for these activities, both regarding research and experiment facilities, an in-depth analysis of the state of the art is an essential requirement at this time. Such an analysis is presented in this volume. It ad dresses all of the topics that have been identified to be of relevance. Besides a presentation of the fundamental aspects justifying microgravity research, the results of experiments already performed are reviewed and recommendations for future activities are made. Close to fifty European scientists have cooper ated in the preparation of this volume and their dedicated and concerted effort is greatly appreciated.
