Book Description :

Energy has always been one of the most important factors in any type of human or industrial endeavor. Clean energy and alternative energy sources are slowly but steadily replacing fossil fuels, the over-dependence on which have led to many environmental and economic troubles over the past century. The main challenge that needs to be addressed in switching to clean energy is storing it for use in the electrical grid and transportation systems. Lithium ion batteries are currently one of the most promising energy storage devices and tremendous amount of research is being done in high capacity anode and cathode materials, and better electrolytes and battery packs as well, leading to overall high efficiency and capacity energy storage systems. Polymer derived ceramics (PDCs) are a special class of ceramics, usually used in high temperature applications, but some silicon based PDCs have demonstrated good electrochemical properties in lithium ion batteries. The goal of this research is to explore a special hybrid ceramic of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silicon oxy carbide (SiOC) ceramic derived from 1,3,5,7 -- tetravinyl -- 1,3,5,7 -- tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TTCS) polymer for use in lithium ion batteries and investigate the source of its properties which might make the ceramic particularly useful in some highly specialized energy storage applications.

Batteries that can store electricity from solar and wind generation farms are a key component of a sustainable energy strategy. Featuring 15 peer-reviewed entries from the Encyclopedia of Sustainability Science and Technology, this book presents a wide range of battery types and components, from nanocarbons for supercapacitors to lead acid battery systems and technology. Worldwide experts provides a snapshot-in-time of the state-of-the art in battery-related R&D, with a particular focus on rechargeable batteries. Such batteries can store electrical energy generated by renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower installations with high efficiency and release it on demand. They are efficient, non-polluting, self-contained devices, and their components can be recovered and used to recreate battery systems. Coverage also highlights the significant efforts currently underway to adapt battery technology to power cars, trucks and buses in order to eliminate pollution from petroleum combustion. Written for an audience of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and industry experts, Batteries for Sustainability is an invaluable one-stop reference to this essential area of energy technology.

Book Description :

Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are considered as the most essential energy storage systems due to high energy density. However, current graphite anodes severely hinder LIB from further supporting fast-growing electric vehicles markets for low theoretical capacity. Silicon attracts attentions as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation LIB anode materials because of its much higher theoretical capacity. Silicon anodes have not been commercialized because of the challenges caused by extreme volume expansions and following passive problems, including continuous solid electrolyte interface formation, contact loss between active materials and finally, cycle retention decays. In this thesis, we discuss how to overcome these technical issues by engineering Si/graphene hybrid anodes through aircontrolled electrospray, which include three parts: silicon/graphene hybrid additive to LIB anode with Modifications; directly deposited silicon/graphene oxide LIB anode and further study on their size ratio effect and finally Interconductivity from graphene nanoribbon (GNR) in directly deposited silicon/graphene LIB anode.

Book Description :

Silicon exists as a promising Li-ion anode material due to its exceptionally high theoretical capacity (4200 mA h g-1), however, inherent limitations prevent its direct use in commercial devices. Crystalline Si (c-Si) experiences extreme volume expansions (300-400%) upon lithiation, resulting in permanent structural deformation, thus hindering cell performance. Amorphous Si (a-Si) has been proposed as an alternative to c-Si, however it is reported that at low potentials, a-Si reverts to a c-Si phase. Here we report an amorphous material comprised primarily of Si, as a viable fast charging anode for Li-ion batteries. The inclusion of additional metal ions with mismatched radii ranging from 55 pm to 118 pm is believed to prevent the formation of a crystalline network. Herein, we report a simple, highly scalable synthetic method for the production of amorphous materials, and their direct application as Li-ion anodes. Through careful compositional optimization, we find that the amorphous material Si78Sn16Al4Ti2 displays the best performance at several charge rates, ranging from C/3 to 60 C, which can be further improved through ballmilling. With the use of several instrumental techniques, we demonstrate that though the majority of the active material is amorphous, regions of Sn segregation exist on and below the surface. These regions, in addition to Si, act as lithiation centers, and contribute to the performance of the battery. Systems other than Li are investigated to illustrate the broad applicability of this material. In addition to Li, the material proves to be a viable anode for Na batteries as well, with sodiation capability shown at rates of C/24 to C/3. Finally, to demonstrate its capability as a commercial Li-ion battery anode, the amorphous anode is paired with LiFePO4, NMC, and NCA cathodes. The full cells are capable of operating over a wide potential range of 4.5 V to 5 mV, thus making them appealing candidates for high energy density applications. This wide range of use, ease of production, and promising performance makes this amorphous material a promising anode candidate for future battery applications.
