The purpose of this study is to determine the presence/degree of sexual dimorphism of the 12th thoracic vertebra through a quantitative analysis and to further examine its potential and reliability in the sex estimation of human skeletal remains. This study also explores the age-related changes of human skeletal remains and how these affect morphological variation conducive to sex estimation. In order to assess this, the 12th thoracic vertebrae, femur and sacrum of 168 mature skeletal remains (94 males and 74 females) from the Raymond Dart Collection in Johannesburg, South Africa and 407 (205 males and 202 females) mature skeletal remains from the Hamann-Todd Collection in Cleveland, Ohio were analyzed. Only individuals whose group affiliation was designated as "South African Black" from the Raymond Dart Collection and "African American" from the Hamann-Todd Collection were measured. This was done to permit the examination of geographical variance within and between the two samples. The morphology of the 12th thoracic vertebra was examined by means of univariate and multivariate analyses to better assess each effect. These analyses resulted in relatively high correct classifications of males and females in all samples, with mean measurement values being larger in males in all measurements. While age-related changes have little effect on the high reliability of sex estimation in the African American sample, age-related changes decreases the reliability of sex estimation in the South African sample. Overall, this study reveals that the 12th thoracic vertebra has potential for use in sex estimation as a result of the skeletal morphological variation between males and females both documented in the Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons and the Hamann-Todd Osteological Collection.

Accurate sex estimation of human skeletal remains is imperative for skeletal biologists, and relies upon the sexual dimorphism between males and females in a population. The degree of dimorphism, and hence the accuracy of sex estimation methods, are known to vary among populations, and while such global patterns have been well studied, the underlying causes of this variation are relatively unclear. Body size--a sexually dimorphic trait that also varies among populations--has previously been shown to affect skeletal morphology, yet whether specific body size parameters, such as stature and body mass, influence the expression of traits used for nonmetric sex estimation has not been previously tested. To address this problem, this study tests three hypotheses: (1) variation in expression of sexually dimorphic traits will co-vary with body size, (2) stature will be a greater contributor to the sexual dimorphism of specific skeletal traits than body mass, and (3) sexual dimorphism will increase as stature increases. Over 200 skeletons of varying body size were scored according to three widely-used sex estimation methods for the cranium, pelvis, and humerus. Existing and novel metrics provide more nuanced measures of dimorphism in the same skeletal regions. A suite of parametric and nonparametric statistical tests were conducted to determine the degree of covariation among the skeletal traits, method performance, and body size. Results show significant correlations exist between dimorphic traits and both body size parameters, with stature exhibiting stronger correlations than body mass. However, the effects of stature on individual traits become diluted when analyzing overall method performance, which remains unaffected by body size. The exception is the pelvic method, which exhibits high classification accuracy for the tallest and shortest males in the sample, with individuals around the mean at the highest risk of misclassification. Despite the results of the pelvic method, overall there is little effect of body size on morphological sex estimation performance. However, body size does influence metric traits, with stature exerting more influence than body mass. Future research should explore whether body size, particularly stature, has the potential to affect both intra- and interpopulational application of metric sex estimation methods.

New insights are offered for future research from the presentation of case studies on gender and a comparison of the sex differences between two African-American collections which suggests a correlation between occupation and evolutionary change. To achieve the objective, data on 294 adults from four diverse collections of known sex are obtained using a total of 67 morphological and metric methods. An additional 23 morphological and metric methods used on juveniles, aged 0 to 18, from two of the collections. The methods are specific to either the cranium, mandible, pelvis, humerus or femur. The compilation of assessment of sex provides definitive answers on which type of method, morphological or metric, is more accurate, which morphological and metric methods are the most accurate, and which bones are more reliable to estimate sex especially in the absence of a pelvis. Investigations in Sex Estimation is intended to be used in the field and the laboratory for the identification of sex in human remains and aims to provide a wealth of data for future research in sexual dimorphic studies. Loth & Henneberg (1996) described a simple morphological feature for sex determination by observing the flexure of the posterior margin of the mandibular ramus, at the level of the occlusal plane and claimed 99% prediction accuracy. To date, reliability of this method in assessing sex in an Egyptian sample has not yet been reported upon. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the sex diagnostic power of the method among the adult Egyptians. Orthopantomographic assessment of mandibular posterior ramus flexure as a single sex indicator in 100 adult Egyptians revealed accuracy of 82% for males and 84 % for females and an overall accuracy of 83%. These results differ from those published by Loth & Henneberg (1996). However, they are in agreement with the conclusions reached by several other scholars. It is concluded that, using ramus flexure alone for sex assessment does not provide a high level of confidence and should be used in conjunction with other dimorphic traits.

The humerus has rarely been tapped as a site for sex determination, though it has often demonstrated an even greater accuracy than other long bones such as the femur. Determination of sex is of medico legal importance and also useful to establish the identity in archaeological explorations. It is an attempt to connect to the peace of information in human evolution. Almost all bones of the human skeleton show some degree of sexual dimorphism. It is recognized that long bone cross-sectional area is greater in males compared to females, which is tough to reflect more rapid periosteal bone growth in boys. In the present study we were collected 100 dry human humeri of unknown sex from different medical institutions and Anthropology department of S.V University, Tirupati.Each humerus was measured for 14 parameters by using Osteometric board and sliding caliper and recorded the values. In the previous studies authors did not analyze possible differences among population related to relationship between total humeral length and the measurements of their segments. The present study reveals that humeri of unknown gender can be sexed to the extent of 75-80% by using above mentioned parameters.
