Semi-active Suspension Control provides an overview of vehicle ride control employing smart semi-active damping systems. This work considers the design, analyses, and experimentation of a new variable stiffness suspension system. The design is based on the concept of a variable stiffness mechanism. The mechanism, which is a simple arrangement of two springs, a lever arm, and a pivot bar, has an effective stiffness that is a rational function of the horizontal position of the pivot. The effective stiffness is varied by changing the position of the pivot while keeping the point of application of the external force constant. The overall suspension system consists of a horizontal control strut and a vertical strut. The main idea is to vary the load transfer ratio by moving the location of the point of attachment of the vertical strut to the car body. This movement is controlled passively, semi-actively, and actively using the horizontal strut. The system is analyzed using an L2-gain analysis based on the concept of energy dissipation. The analyses, simulation, experimental results, show that the variable stiffness suspension achieves better performance than the constant stiffness counterpart. The performance criteria used are; ride comfort, characterized by the car body acceleration, suspension deflection, and road holding, characterized by tire deflection.

The fundamental properties of various automotive suspension systems are theoretically investigated on the basis of simple vehicle models subjected to realistic inputs chosen to represent road surfaces of different qualities. The vehicle response is evaluated through a performance index representing ride comfort, dynamic tyre load and suspension working space parameters, and interpreted in the light of these individual parameters together with the implications of the suspension design for attitude control and steering behaviour. Linear analysis procedures are followed in studying the passive, active and slow-active suspension systems while suitable simulations are used for the non-linear semi-active suspension systems. Linear optimal control theory is used to determine the optimal parameters of the active and slow-active suspension systems. Semi-active suspension behaviours are evaluated on the basis of applying the optimal active parameters to each system, but the semi-active damper can only dissipate energy and switches off when external power would be needed for the system to follow the optimal active control law. Results are generated and discussed for each of these types of system and their performance capabilities are compared with each other. Conclusions concerning the practical viability of each of the systems are drawn.

A solution to the vehicle state estimation problem is given using the Kalman filtering and the Particle filtering theories. Vehicle states are necessary for an active or a semi-active suspension control system, which is intended to enhance ride comfort, road handling and stability of the vehicle. Due to a lack of information on road disturbances, conventional estimation techniques fail to provide accurate estimates of all the required states. The proposed estimation algorithm, named Supervisory Kalman Filter (SKF), consists of a Kalman filter with an extra update step which is inspired by the particle filtering technique. The extra step, called a supervisory layer, operates on the portion of the state vector that cannot be estimated by the Kalman filter. First, it produces N randomly generated state vectors, the particles, which are distributed based on the Kalman filter's last updated estimate. Then, a resampling stage is implemented to collect the particles with higher probability. The effectiveness of the SKF is demonstrated by comparing its estimation results with that of the Kalman filter and the particle filter when a test vehicle is passing over a bump. The estimation results confirm that the SKF precisely estimates those states of the vehicle that cannot be estimated by either the Kalman filter or the particle filter, without any direct measurement of the road disturbance inputs. Once the vehicle states are provided, a suspension control law, the Skyhook strategy, processes the current states and adjusts the damping forces accordingly to provide a better and safer ride for the vehicle passengers. This thesis presents a novel systematic and practical methodology for the design and implementation of the Skyhook control strategy for vehicle's semi-active suspension systems.
