The main target of this incorporation is to connect different parties of power grid to exchange information about grid conditions and customers’ requirements, and consequently, improve the reliability and efficiency of electricity generation and distribution. That upgrade of the power grid exposes it to the cyber security threats that the communication networks suffer from, such as malicious attacks to forge the electricity consumption readings or price, extract personal information for residential consumers, such as daily habits and life style, or attack some grid’s resources and equipment availability using denial-of-service attacks. Also, novel threats are introduced in smart grid due to the power grid nature, such as false data injection attack, in which the adversary compromises several measurement units and injects false information about the grid conditions that mislead the grid’s control center to make wrong decisions for the grid and consequently impact on its stability and efficiency.

Message authentication has vital significance for dynamic microgrid partition in smart grid. However, current message authentication protocols based on “public key infrastructure” are too complicated to be deployed in smart grid and lack group information management function. On the other hand, group information management protocols based on “logic key hierarchy” need to broadcast a lot of messages during microgrid partition processes, resulting in high communication costs. To address these issues, we present a novel identity-based message authentication protocol for dynamic microgrid partition called securing dynamic microgrid partition. Similar to the protocols of this field, securing dynamic microgrid partition can provide message authentication and group information management functions. However, compared to other well-known approaches, securing dynamic microgrid partition uses Bloom filter for managing group information, which can reduce the communication cost of logic key hierarchy significantly. Moreover, securing dynamic microgrid partition uses Lagrange interpolation for designing new identity-based signing and verification algorithms, which is simple to be deployed in smart grid environment and much more efficient than current identity-based protocols. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is feasible for real-world applications.

The second section covers the formal verification of the security and resiliency of smart grid control systems by using a formal model to analyze attack evasions on state estimation, a core control module of the supervisory control system in smart grids. The model identifies attack vectors that can compromise state estimation. This section also covers risk mitigation techniques that synthesize proactive security plans that make such attacks infeasible. The last part of the book discusses the dynamic security analysis for smart grids. It shows that AMI behavior can be modeled using event logs collected at smart collectors, which in turn can be verified using the specification invariants generated from the configurations of the AMI devices. Although the focus of this book is smart grid security and resiliency, the included formal analytics are generic enough to be extended to other cyber-physical systems, especially those related to industrial control systems (ICS). The complexity and heterogeneity of components introduce new challenges in terms of security and privacy. With the demand of constant availability of power and complex interaction between components, experts possess tedious task to find vulnerabilities and threats in the communication network. Weakness in cyber security of power system is also threatening for the physical security as both are deeply integrated with each other. With the complex networking of SG, it is almost impossible to secure every single node. Therefore, communication network needs constant monitoring and analysis of traffic to detect abnormal activities. To conquer security challenges, various techniques have been implemented in every aspect of SG, from implementing new architecture to upgrading control center, and deploying new secure components in Advanced Metering Infrastructure [AMI].To contribute into security of SG, we present a research which deals with threats in power systems and analyzes the impacts of these threats on control center, advanced metering infrastructure and customers. Before predicting the impact, simulated model is implemented using network simulator NS3. A model represents the communication network consist of nodes in Control Center and AMI, where substation node is transmitting data to control center node. The results of simulation are captured in the pcap files which can be analyze to conclude smooth working of smart grid.
