Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel and promising technology for power generation with inherent CO2 capture. Currently almost all the research has been focused on developing CLC based inter-connected fluidized bed reactors. A new rotating reactor concept for gas fueled CLC is proposed. In the reactor, a solid wheel rotates between the fuel and the air streams at the reactor inlet and exit. Two purging sectors are used to avoid the mixing between the fuel stream and the air stream. The rotating wheel consists of a large number of channels with copper oxide coated on the inner surface of the channels. The support material is boron nitride which has high specific heat and thermal conductivity. Gas flows through the reactor at elevated pressure and it is heated from 823K to 1245K by fuel combustion. The rotary reactor design for a thermal capacity of 1MW has been performed using a simplified model that was developed to predict the performances of the reactor. Preliminary analysis shows that both the fuel conversion efficiency and the carbon separation efficiency are close to unity. The wheel temperature fluctuation is small. There is great potential for further improvement of the construction and operating conditions, which will be followed up in the future.

A number of CO2 capture-enabled power generation technologies have been proposed to address the negative environmental impact of CO2 emission. An important barrier to adopting these technologies is the associated energy and economic penalties. Chemical-looping (CLC) is an oxycombustion technology that can significantly lower such penalties, utilizing a redox process to eliminate the need for an air separation unit and enable better energy integration. Conventional CLC employs two separate reactors, with metal oxide particles circulating pneumatically in-between, leading to significant irreversibility associated with reactor temperature difference. A rotary reactor, on the other hand, maintains near-thermal equilibrium between the two stages by thermally coupling channels undergoing oxidation and reduction. In this thesis, a multiscale analysis for assessing the integration of the rotary CLC reactor technology in power generation systems is presented. This approach employs a sequence of models that successively increase the resolution of the rotary reactor representation, ranging from interacting thermal reservoirs to higher fidelity quasi-steady state models, in order to assess the efficiency potential and perform a robust optimization of the integrated system. Analytical thermodynamic availability and ideal cycles are used to demonstrate the positive impact of reactor thermal coupling on system efficiency. Next, detailed process flow-sheet models in which the rotary reactor is modeled as a set of interacting equilibrium reactors are used to validate the analytical model results, identify best cycle configurations and perform preliminary parametric analysis for between the reactor and the system while maintaining computational efficiency, an intermediate fidelity model is developed, retaining finite rate surface kinetics and internal heat transfer within the reactor. This model is integrated with a detailed system model and used for optimization, parametric analysis and characterization of the relative techno-economic performance of different oxygen carrier options for thermal plants integrated with the rotary CLC reactor. Results show that thermal coupling in the redox process increases the efficiency by up to 2% points for combined, recuperative and hybrid cycles. The studies also show that the thermal efficiency is a function of the reactor purge steam demand, which depends on the reactivity of the oxygen carrier. While purge steam constitutes a monotonic parasitic loss for the combined cycle, for recuperative and hybrid cycles, it raises the efficiency as long as the steam demand is less than a threshold value. This relationship between reactivity and system efficiency provides a useful selection criteria for the oxygen carrier material. Optimization results based on efficiency and levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) identify nickel-based oxygen carriers as the most suitable for the rotary reactor because its high reactivity ensures low steam demand and reactor cost. Compared to nickel, maximum efficiency and minimum LCOE are respectively 7% lower and 40% higher for a copper-based system; iron-based systems have 4% higher maximum efficiency and 7% higher minimum LCOE. This study also showed that optimal efficiency generally has an inverse profile to that for the optimized LCOE.

The design process for an experimental platform measuring reaction kinetics in a chemical looping combustion (CLC) process is documented and justified. To enable an experiment designed to characterize the reaction kinetics of the reduction/oxidation cycle in a rotary channeled oxygen carrier, a platform was designed to deliver controlled conditions of temperature and gas flow around a central disc of oxygen-carrier material and determine the rates of oxidation and reduction using real-time gas analysis (RTGA). Experimental and calcuiated results show that flux flattening is accomplished by moving the boron burnable poison in ETR fuel elements from the fuel region to the sideplates. MTR shim rod calibrations were made for Cycle 146- B by distributed poison techniques. Excess reactivities calculated from these calibrations by three definitions give maximum values of from approximately 13.5 to 15.5%. The Advanced Reactivity Measurement Facility (ARMF) is now supplementing the Reactivity Measurement Facility (RMF) in making reactor physics measurements on small samples. The design aim of the ARMF is to achieve the maximum sensitivity and reproducibility possible with more stable operation and better control than in the RMF. Heat transfer calculations are being made on a thorium slug in the form of a thick-walled tube, which it is proposed to irrddiate, instead of the present solid slug, for U/sup 2//sup 3//sup 3/ production in the MTR high flux. Experimenthl techniques are being developed for measuring the l/E component of neutron flux in several experimental positions of the RMF. Irradiation of a highly enriched 54 wt.% UO/sub 2/--Al fuel plate sample to 56% U/sup 2//sup 3//sup 5/ burnup produced a reaction (flssion damage) zone around the UO/sup 2/ particles. Hydraulic tests made on roughened fuel plates indicated roughening as a possible means of increasing the heat transfer rate during forced convection cooling. Analyses of the total cross sections for Pu/sup 2//sup 4//sup 1/ and Pa/sup 2//sup 3//sup 1/ were ess entially completed, and a final report for Pu/sup 2//sup 4//sup 1/ was submitted for publication. Measurements of U/sup 2//sup 3/ eta values using the Mn bath technique with the monochromatic crystal spectrometer neutrons were continued. Experimental results to date are primarily concerned with measurements of the corrections required. Scattering measurements for samples of U/sup 2//sup 3//sup 3/ were undertsken on the fast chopper. Various integral cross sections in reactor spectra were undertaken. The 27,000 b capture cross section of Pm/sup 1//sup 4//sup 8/ (T/sub 1//sub ///sub 2/ = 40.6 d) is of considerable reactor interest as a material produced from fission products at high fuel burnup. Neutron inelastic scattering measurements from methane were completed and compared with theoretical predictions based upon gas models. These measurements served to demonstrate the reliability of the experimental procedures and provided insight and valuable checks upon the theory as applied to a simple case. A previously unreported 3.14 hr isometric level was found in Y/sup 9//sup 0/ at 0.685 Mev. A program undertsken to determine the spin of the 512 kev level of decay of 2.3 d Np/sup 2// sup 3//sup 9/ by use of directional correlation measurements resulted in a preliminary level scheme. Continuing studies on gamma rays from the decay of both Pu/sup 2//sup 3//sup 9/ and Pu/sup 2//sup 4//sup 0/ resulted in gamma ray energy measurements not previously reported. A new end-window proportional counter was developed with improved geometry that minimizes the positive slope of the voltage plateau. An all-electronic scanning switch was developed to replace an existing 10 pole 100 position motor-driven rotary switch used to translate scaler data into a form usable by computer equipment. A number of new programs and computing techniques for the IBM-650 (and one for the IBM-704) were developed. These include a least squares program for use in calibrating the ARMF reguiating rod, a gamma spectrum interpolation scheme for use in generating analyzer response curves, an IBM-704 code for hot channel analysis in SPERT III, a nonlinear least squares program for the IBM-650, a program for use on the IBM-650 to edit input dath for the IBM-704 code PDQ, and a comprehensive MTR-ETR pricing and recordkeeping program for the irradiations in these reactors. The Program Manager for Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment (PMACWA) of the Department of Defense (DOD) requested the National Research Council (NRC) to assess the engineering design studies (EDSs) developed by Parsons/Honeywell and General Atomics for a chemical demilitarization facility to completely dispose of the assembled chemical weapons at the Pueblo Chemical Depot in Pueblo, Colorado. To accomplish the task, the NRC formed the Committee on Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons: Phase II (ACW II Committee). This report presents the results of the committee's scientific and technical assessment, which will assist the Office of the Secretary of Defense in selecting the technology package for destroying the chemical munitions at Pueblo. The committee evaluated the engineering design packages proposed by the technology providers and the associated experimental studies that were performed to validate unproven unit operations. A significant part of the testing program involved expanding the technology base for the hydrolysis of energetic materials associated with assembled weapons. This process was a concern expressed by the Committee on Review and Evaluation of Alternative Technologies for Demilitarization of Assembled Chemical Weapons (ACW I Committee) in its original report in 1999 (NRC, 1999). The present study took place as the experimental studies were in progress. In some cases, tests for some of the supporting unit operations were not completed in time for the committee to incorporate results into its evaluation. In those cases, the committee identified and discussed potential problem areas in these operations. Based on its expertise and its aggressive data-gathering activities, the committee was able to conduct a comprehensive review of the test data that had been completed for the overall system design. This report summarizes the study.
