Book Description :

"During the past decade Canadian policy-makers have been forced to re-examine familiar forms of government and established programs in the face of growing budget deficits, economic instability, and a rapidly changing global economy. This collection of eighteen original essays presents a critical exploration of the question of political and economic restructuring from the vantage point of gender." "The authors argue that the present shift in the global order is revealing the contradictory effects of what is a dual process of both gender erosion and intensification. With the convergence of male and female job experiences in polarized labour markets, gender appears to be less important in understanding the global political economy; at the same time, gender becomes more of a determining factor in the transformation of politics and markets owing to the changing role of women as workers, care givers, and consumers." "The decline of the Keynesian welfare state has made claims-based politics less viable as a site of struggle for the women's movement. Not only has claims-based politics been replaced by a trend towards community and individual reliance, the women's movement itself has undergone a transformation that precludes a unitary, homogenous approach to policy and politics."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description :

A detailed and historical account of both theory and practice, this book attempts to make sense of the loose and little understood field of development administration. The book focuses on development administration over forty years and identifies key attributes of public bureaucracy which are associated with bureaucratic performance. The associations between bureaucracy's attributes and performance are employed in explaining development differences between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago over the period 1960-1995. Associations are explored at the macro level through aggregate data and at the micro level through fascinating case studies of the Industrial Development Corporations (IDCs), associated with economic growth, and the Ministry of Education, associated with women's empowerment. The study establishes clear patterns of associations in the empirical cases and explores the implications of these findings for the theory of development administration.

Book Description :

It is crucial to rethink development as linked to human rights. The economy, society, culture and politics should be taken into account as a whole, not forgetting the environmental dimension. It is undoubtfully over-ambitious to pretend exhaustive solutions. We can however start to foresee the response, to consider a new paradigm and to ascertain its consequences in terms of goverance and renewal of the economic thought.

Book Description :

Fifth Edition The true story of Blood, Bullets and Bodies: a critical multimedia exposé about the factors subverting the political will to act in the best interest of the poor, even when explicit just cause exists for such altruistic action to take place… Blood, Bullets and Bodies is a strange and paradoxical story that needs to be read as much as it needs to be told. It is a riveting story of sex, violence, political intrigue and survival by any means necessary. The book is a literary mirror that provides a revealing and frightening reflection for a self-destructing society to see itself profiled in the throes of its own possible demise. Sure to stir controversy, the new book contains a compelling rendition of the historical circumstances that have made crime and violence – bullets, blood and dead bodies – the number one problem in late 20th and early 21st century Jamaica. Despite the historic One Love Peace Concert and the Peace Truce in 1978, young gunmen seem to have gone wild ever since. Using a variety of sophisticated methodological tools including literary sources, oral interviews, ethnographic studies and the lyrics of popular Reggae songs, Imani Tafari-Ama details the influences and implications of this violent social discourse for everyday performances of femininity and masculinity in Kingston’s inner-city environment as well as in the wider Jamaican society. Tafari-Ama’s stated objective in publishing her thesis as a book is to separate fact from fiction in order to find real and enduring solutions that will reduce the distressing flood of blood, bullets and bodies that is overflowing the streets of Kingston. She hopes that by highlighting some of the facts and exposing much of the fiction about life below the poverty line, her provocative book will be a catalyst in motivating the political and community willpower necessary to find and implement the real-time solutions that she proposes in her suggested Options for Development.

This volume provides critical and descriptive annotations of books, articles, dissertations, and audiovisual sources on women and work in developing countries. General works are grouped in an introductory bibliographic chapter, with other chapters devoted to regions.
