Book Description :

The hepatocyte adapts its metabolic and excretory function to changes in nutrient supply, xenobiotics, cytokines and hormones, which provides a basis for the role of the liver in the maintenance of the body's homeostasis. Such adaptations of hepatocellular function to the environment require not only structures for recognition of signal molecules and for the sensing of environmental alterations, but also machineries which transfer this information to intracellular effector sites. Considerable progress has been made during recent years with respect to the understanding of membrane-associated receptor systems and the molecular mechanisms by which signals are transduced from these receptors to the effector sites inside the cell, i.e. the nucleus and other organelles, the cytoskeleton and various enzymes. A complex signal transduction network involving a coordinated action of a variety of protein kinase and phosphatase cascades has been identified. Such signalling events are not only important for the understanding of the physiological regulation of liver cell function, but also provide new pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects. This book, the proceedings of a Falk Workshop on `Signalling in the Liver' (Part IV of the Liver Week Freiburg 1997) held in Freiburg, Germany, October 6, brings together an international forum of experts in both basic science and clinical applications.

The effort to improve the pharmacokinetic properties of the currently available H4 R ligands is reflected in a steadily growing number of scientific publications and patent applications. Preclinical data strongly confirms the need for novel potent H4 R ligands to explore their therapeutic value in allergy, inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and possibly, cancer. Readers will be provided with extensive knowledge on histamine metabolism, as well as cellular histamine transport, storage and release, effects of histamine and histamine receptor ligands, with particular attention to the H4 R, on inflammatory cells including mast cells, basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils, macrophages, dendritic cells, and T cells. The present knowledge on the regulatory role of histamine and the therapeutic exploitation of histamine receptor ligands in atopic diseases, with emphasis on human and animal models of asthma, allergic dermatitis and pruritus are discussed.

Quick Reference Handbook for Surgical Pathologists

Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

ISBN : 3642200869
Language : En, Es, Fr & De

Book Description :

This book is a compilation of high-yield, at-a-glance summaries for various topics on which pathologists frequently need information in a quick reference format while at the microscope (or when cramming for the boards). The authors are early-career pathologists who have compiled this book from the perspective of pathologists-in-training. The focus is not organ-based histologic criteria, but rather everything else that goes into pathologic diagnoses but is difficult to keep committed to memory. The emphasis is on immunohistochemistry, special stains, grading systems, molecular markers, tumor syndromes, and helpful clinical references. The book has a unique format in that the information is presented primarily in tables and diagrams accompanied by minimal explanatory text. It is intended to serve as a ‘peripheral brain’ for pathology residents and also practicing pathologists, where frequently needed information is readily accessible and easy to navigate.

Oral Board Review for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Book Description :

The oral board exam for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) can be intimidating to many surgeons due to the broad range of information one must know for the exam. However, while the examination guidelines provide a general outline of topics that may be covered, there is no true direction on how to prepare for it. Traditionally, candidates do so by using what are considered “underground” databanks, previous test questions, and power point presentations that run the gamut of commonly covered material. Until now, there have been no current comprehensive oral board review books available for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery boards. Oral Board Review for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery fills that gap as the go-to resource for those attempting to successfully challenge the oral boards and for residents to polish up on their training. Edited and authored by top physicians in the field, this book is concise and easy to read, yet thorough with high yield information. An outline of the pertinent material is reviewed, and a patient work up is presented. Important questions to ask, signs to look for, and labs/images to order are included. It also includes tables and keywords that are typically mentioned on the exam and also offers explanations to some key points. Next are cases, which are presented in a question and answer format. As the case progresses, more complicated scenarios requiring management are presented. Lastly, complications are covered, which is the final section of each board scenario. Included are basic topics the surgeon needs to know, followed by topics that are nice to know, and numerous highly debated/complex questions that are discussed among candidates preparing for the exam. It should be noted that the authors are not privy to any inside information about the exam. What is presented is material candidates that have successfully passed the exam feel is important to know. This book is not endorsed by American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons or the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Book Description :

When a child has a health problem, parents want answers. But when a child has cerebral palsy, the answers don't come quickly. A diagnosis of this complex group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination is difficult to make and is typically delayed until the child is eighteen months old. Although the condition may be mild or severe, even general predictions about long-term prognosis seldom come before the child's second birthday. Written by a team of experts associated with the Cerebral Palsy Program at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, this authoritative resource provides parents and families with vital information that can help them cope with uncertainty. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate the latest medical advances, the second edition is a comprehensive guide to cerebral palsy. The book is organized into three parts. In the first, the authors describe specific patterns of involvement (hemiplegia, diplegia, quadriplegia), explain the medical and psychosocial implications of these conditions, and tell parents how to be effective advocates for their child. In the second part, the authors provide a wealth of practical advice about caregiving from nutrition to mobility. Part three features an extensive alphabetically arranged encyclopedia that defines and describes medical terms and diagnoses, medical and surgical procedures, and orthopedic and other assistive devices. Also included are lists of resources and recommended reading.
